I love your patterns especially the dry flies & particularly the CDC patterns, in regards to the type of CDC used on the CDC sparse dun are they the oiler puffs you use & if not have you ever used them for the wings?
The ones I used were the very fine CDC feathers just above where the puffs would be on the bird so I would be happy to use both especially on smaller flies..I'm glad you liked the patterns I have tyed using the CDC...
thanks for the reply davie and one more thing slightly off topic could i ask how often you renew your varnish or are you tying that many flies that the varnish doesnt get time to thicken lol
You're welcome..I use an acetone free nail varnish remover to keep my varnish from getting too thick by adding a small drop ever so often but you have to watch what one you buy as it has to be clear and not coloured as it can turn the varnish white..
Top stuff davie do you have any recommendations for CDC as the stuff I've got is very thick in the stem and if I just use the tip there isn't much in the way of plumes.
You may be using domestic duck CDC which has broken fibres and not as good as wild duck CDC like I used in the video a lot better, the last packets I bought came from Cookshill Fly Tying but you should be able to find it in most shops..
Hi Davie, nice simple fly, the music at the beginning and end I presume it's your sons, he's very talented He should put some music on you tube on his own, nice and relaxing really nice to listen too. give him my regards Alan
I would just like to thank you all for the kind words and as well offering good advice on the floatant to use with your experience using CDC, many will find this very helpful...
Lovely little pattern that certainly looks the part. Like the way you double up the CDC wing too. Always at least one new tip on all your tyings, thank you as always.
For the life me I mine float no where near as nice as a catskill type of fly. For water reason my CDC gets soaked and sink almost immediately, and then when I use floatant, it just doesn't seem to look right on the water :( beautiful flies though.
@shakeyfly There is a product called 'Frogs Fanny'. It is a fumed silica based powder that acts as a drying agent and floatant. When your CDC gets soggy just mop it on your fleece, hanky etc, then dust the bits you want to float with the FF, it fluffs up the CDC and floats for ages! You won't need a silicone floatant at all for CDC.
If you do use floatant it is defo best to apply it the day before and let it dry b4 fishing. Applying floatant on the bank, especially if fly already wet, is futile.

Hey Davie, ever tried to tie the fly with dyed hackle stems. I did and it works great. The stems are natural bouyant and very strong.
I just started to watch your videos and I must say I'm hooked :)
You're the best

Davie, is this a fly for a beginner to tie?

Hi MegaTroutFishing,
I would try it but leave the quill off the body and just use the thread as it will still work, let me know how you get on....
