OMG!!! I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!! I had this tape as a little kid and found in our attic last year! I show it to all my friends and we all think its quite possibly the most wonderfully disturbed child's video ever! Styro is my favorite of all the videos! Its nice to know I'm not the only one to know about these awesome video!
Ahh I loved this video, even though it always made me sad to see him get caught. :( My dad's been bringing it up lately, it took me watching to actually remember what he was talking about.
Oh man, I remember this used to disturb and sadden me as a kid. I'd forgotten the whole thing, but as soon as it started I had a vague feeling something bad would happen, like he'd get caught in a jail, and wouldn't you know it.
The origninal was done by Sinnott and Associates in Chicago. See previous comments. He did it as a demostration piece of his CGI capabilities, and I think to get on the ACM graphic animation reel. He was alwayhs named Syro. I worked there as a consultant during that time and just put up my "Styro" xmas tree ornament I got from Tom Sinnott for
O___O WTF???!!!! After seeing the original scene from Beyond the Minds Eye, coming across this... I don't know whether to laugh or cry. My main reaction was, "What the heck? They named the dog? Or, wait, was it already named...?" It was something like that...
No. I mean this made me want to cry... because it was made from those scenes and I was looking for the original... and this is what I found. I'm not sure whether it's good or bad.
I was working at Sinnott's on some consulting projects at the time this was created. I even have a Styro Christmas tree ornament he gave out one year. Tom now is a VP/GM Technicolor West Coast Digital Intermediates.
There is an episode 2 of Styro. Wonder if it will ever surface?
The animation was done by Sinnot and Associates of Chicago. Tom Sinnott had the only company in Chicago at the time with a staff doing hand animation. He transitioned over to CGI and this was a spec short to show off what his group could do.
He's Styro, Styro the dog He's lucky to be a pink and blue dog He's got ridges down his back and a long kooky tail He's trying all the time just to stay out of jail He's Styro the dog And that rhymes with dog! He's Styro the dog I'm the dog with the bone! He's Styro, Styro the dog He's Styro He's Styro, Styro the dog He's Styro, Styro the dog He's Styro, Styro the dog He's Styro, Styro the dog He's Styro!
Many of these videos had different soundtracks. I have a version of Styro with a very techno beat type music, but it's about half the length of this and the part with him sniffing the hydrant is cut out. (That's form the Computer Animation Festival vol. 2)
I think the music you can hear here is the original.
The music for most of the YTV shorts was added by Miramar. In the case of videos like All Shapes and Sizes, Miramar put them together out of a handful of unrelated 3D clips and added the soundtrack. That's why you can see such a mixture of styles in most of them, and a few of the same clips in several videos. In the case of Styro, I have no idea what's original and what's not.
I have it on a MovieCD, which I assume is the same format as your source for this short. I really don't feel like figuring out how to convert it to something normal. I just watched my version again, and all I can say is that it's crap, and not worth the effort.
You can take a shot at it if you like, if you give me somewhere to send a 670MB file to. :-)
omg..lol I had been trying to rememeber this video for such a long time. I kept asking my friends about it and they thought I was crazy lol. Great memories... lol thanks.
Brings back memories of my early childhood. Considering the resources back then, I have to say I was and still am impressed by it. Catchy song I never forgot.
I don't know why YTV, Teletoon and the other animation/kids networks don't do stuff like this anymore!? For people in the 90's this was the BEST way to pass time between shows! Thanks for posting it! The quality hardly matters when you've got memories backing it up!
The reason is that back then they were only allowed 8 commercial minutes per hour, but the shows they were airing were formatted for more commercial time. So they had to fill in the extra time with something that wasn't "advertising" and so they used stuff like this.
Thank you for posting this video! I've had characters named styro the dog in certain games, and it's great to finally have found the origin of them again! Favourited.
I want to do it but I'm too scared lol have you actually tried it? If you have, just cerious who's number was it? omg wouldn't it be creepy if a person actually saw this clip and recognized that as their phone number? if it was me I'd feel like someone was stalking me...
It's an invalid number where I'm from. I tried the reverse phone directly from 411 dot ca. It wouldn't be difficult to find out who owns that number, unless it was unlisted.
You dont understand...
I never thought I would see this ever again... This takes me back! THANK YOU...

The newspaper says the Detroit Free Press, so it would be a good idea to check for this number in the detroit area codes.
Keep in mind that this animation was made in the late 80s though, and people often move/change numbers/die in that ammount of time.
