You can and probably should , treat a ruptured aneurysm with coils. This way you dont need to have part of tour skull cutted of. Some aneurysms, depending on position and shape, still better treat with clip.
I had a SAH in January of 2001, They repaired it using these coils,it was devastating to my life but now I have learned to live with what happened to me,I will never be able to work again but I can be a good Father...I thank God that I survived, Thank you Mum,Dad,Shaun,The CHIS,The JR...but most of all thankyou to my three sons for giving me the desire to live.
Well done, I had this and clipping in 2008, my aneurysm had ruptured and I was in big trouble, I'm doing well now out of hospital just over 1 year ago, living home in Ireland on my own, back working at what I love and loving life, kinda used to headaches lol
My mother had a major brain aneurysm on May 19th, unfortunately two weeks before she had just had a stint placed near her heart so she was on Plavix to keep her blood from clotting, with of course is not a good thing when your brain is bleeding. She had 18 coils placed, the aneurysm was over an inch long. We do not know what the long term outcome is going to be, she was transferred from SLU Hosp today to rehab but no one can give us any answers on what to expect if she'll ever recover anymore
SOMEONE HELP ME OUT PLEASE.... COILING IS FOR ANEURYSM'S THAT DONT RUPTURE YET... AM I RIGHT OR WRONG....BECAUSE IF IT RUPTURED , COILING DOSENT MAKE ANY SENSE.. IT SEEMS THE PLATINUM COIL THAT GOES FROM THE GROIN TO THE AORTA TO THE ANEURYSM, WOULD JUST COME OUT OF THE RUPTURED PART??????
Wish I knew about it before it ruptured. I had 2 surgeries, 1st time a clipping, then another one grew OUT OF THE CLIP. Had it replace with another one taken from my arm. I feel fine, in full motion, good memory and seem to be waiting for my wounds to heal and hopefully that shall be it. I am 31.
I wanted to become a doctor but at 15 i visited a fake dentist who ruined one tooth and subsequently, because of the chaos theory, "butterfly effect", my life.
People say : for one tooth, many years ago? Yes.
After many adventures, now i am concentrated again i would to go back to university, but how can i get back all the years spent here and there..I was very good in being prepared and precise. Really something went lost but nobody cares
@ushouldntjudgeme That is what is supposed to happen. The coils are left in the aneurysm, initiating a clotting reaction. Basically, the bulging area solidifies. Once solid, it is no longer in danger of bursting.
Today, my brother 28, left hospital for home! After a strong headache, like a thunder, he collapsed..and the emergency angiography show an ruptured aneurysm.
Doctors coiled the aneurysm and after 13 days in ICU and 8 in the room, my brother ,without complications and no mental or physical deficits, today is back to our family..
I have to thank his doctors and all the stuff who saved his life.. Thank you all!
@ngoumas I'm glad to here of your good fortune. My sister went in the hospital a week ago. had the same procedure, every thing went perfectly. 40 percent die before they reach the hospital, another 25 percent die within 3 days after the procedure. Today, my sister was coming home. got into the vehicle before they got out of the hospital parking lot she fainted, within 3 hours she has no brain function and has little or no chance of survival

My dad had this procedure done about 2 months ago. His recovery was so much quicker than those with the open cerebral procedure. He is doing great today and feels so blessed that this technology exists
I am 54, on 05/02 I had the microcoil procedure performed to deposit 7 platinum pins in the sac. My only symptom was passing out when it began to leak. Neurologist said over 5cc leaked. I was in ICU for 12 days, total 18 days at the hospital due to the heatwave here. Went back to work 2 weeks later. On 08/01/08 i was released to full activity. No headaches, no deficits! Since August I've been doing strength/endurance training at the gym 5x a week. Living life! I may have an angio next month.
My husband recently had a sub-arachnoid haemorrhage and subsequent surgery to clip it shut. He now needs a coil to keep anothe aneurysm safe. This was a very enlightening video. Thank you.
So, above, you can see the process of aneurysm coiling .. what happens is that a microcatheter (guided by a tip-guide) is inserted through the femoral artery in the groin, usually under local anasthesia (yet, some neurosurgeons, including ones i worked with, would prefer general anaesthesia). The microcatheter is inserted until the aneurysm is reached, and a matrix coil is subsequently inserted to form the coiling above. Some time later, blood clots around the coil, thus strengthening the wall
what you are looking at is an aneurysm coiling. An aneurysm is defined as widening of the wall of an artery due to weakness of its wall. Aneurysms are extremely dangerous because of their potential to rupture and cause death secondary to a sub-arachnoidal bleeding (a type of bleeding inside the skull).

@wwwater1 This is an Endovascular Aneurysm Coiling, in which they insert a micro catheter into the femoral artery in the leg through into the carotid artery (or wherever is needed) into the aneurysm. Then tiny platinum coils are then let into the aneurysm, cutting off any sort of blood flow into the aneurysm. Due to what looks like the thickness of the vessel, I am guessing this is a internal carotid aneurysm. In which coiling would be a proper treatment.
@wwwater1 the aneurysm is filled up with tiny coils of wire, I think to prevent blood from going into it and contributing to it bursting. Problem is, many of these aneurysms are not found until it is too late. No one knows they even have one until- BAM!!- it's all over. One of my childhood friends died from one at age 20.

hey bud. How is she. Does she respond like she used to?
I'm also worried about my mother who is in theatre as we speak. A real distressing time.
Hope she recovers

Most ruptured aneurysms are treated by coiling. The coils are very, very soft. see the vid by SLBSI, search "stroke rounds"

from what the doctor told me. You have it clipped if it ruptures. Like a clothing peg 'clip'

I believe they also have a procedure now where they can put a stint inside the blood vessel and coil the aneurysm outside of it.

The wire is taken out after the clotting?

no it stays there forever, and more coiling might be put in later if needed.
