I just got some Lavender cuts and the patient who gave them to me warned me that his garden is having issues with fungus gnats. Sure enough, tonight I noticed I have one or two flying around in my tent. I picked up some diatomaceous earth today and applied a top layer in each of my containers...but my question is this: how often do I need to apply the DE to the top of the soil mix, or is once enough?
Once is enough for DE, they only occupy the very-very top of the soil so cover the whole top with dust.
If they get worse [use sticky-traps for monitoring] use a little Gnatrol, this attacks their larval stage, won't kill adults, but is very effective, [believe me, I know!] for total eradication! (is THAT a word?) Yes!
And the soil recycling! Makes so much sense seeing that hemp renews soil quality on farms! If you mixed it up a bunch and then fertilized, you might never have to change pots! That's like...revolutionary lol.. Mad respect
Dude! That tip about taking the husks off the seeds once the've sprouted is killer shit! Those r the kind of tips people should have on their youtube channels! Peace and weed bro!
@Riffnspliff: according to DJ Short's book, this is especially true of Kush strains. Tweezers or even toothpicks work great if your hands shake like mine do. :)

Thank you so much, again, for the advice given in this video. I had one of three seeds that cracked 2 days ago, that was not breaking through the soil surface. After removing the light covering, I noticed it was growing sideways as the taproot was starting to coil around the seed. I followed your advice about getting the seed and sheath removed...and the cotyledon are already greening up on it, and the stem is straightening up after replanting and back filling.
wouldnt reusing soil from a run be bad cause of bugs and disease? wouldnt the soil need purged or flushed first to clean it? tried this before and had a problem with bugs swo was just curious. peace n stay green
FoxFarm is the shiz-nit! They got a good thing going and I saw with my own eyes a massive growth-spurt when plants were vegged in ocean forest, I only stopped using the farm 'cause of availability in Canada, love the hell outta their products. Be careful with the Tiger Bloom though, too much of a good thAng and all.
I plan on using their Light Warrior soil for starting seedlings, but then transplant to the Ocean Floor soil (with added worm castings & guano) in 2 gallon containers for flowering. After the first 3 weeks of flower I'll start using Advanced Nutrients Iguana - Bloom as the main nute (mixing in molasses with every watering/feeding).
I'll be using SeeMoreBud's tek from his first book. :) Just a tek to hold me over til I can afford two proper grow tents. :)
The 'old' roots mingle with the new nicely, there's no competition or anything. Sprinkle some diotemacious (sp?) earth (silicon dioxide) (roach powder) on top to kill gnat larve and you'll be good to go. Have experiments with dirt cycle 3 going now, stay tuned...
I Have a question on this ,, When you go on your 2nd cycle with the same soil does the root system become 1 or is it just two seperate root system,s ... I know how much a pain playn with dirt can be
Awesome tips. I had been disposing of my soil without reuse. That and the way you're germinating in the ziplocks and on the stereo to keep them warm was cool. Do you cover them to keep them in the dark when they are on the stereo (or fridge)? I thought it was required and never tried it any other way.
dark isn't totally necessary for germination. As soon as the seeds 'crack' open, you'll see it and can transplant asap. I used to put the seeds between the sheets of wet paper towel but they were much harder to see. Thanks, Jeff
Microbiology in the substate is most important in growing the best. If A plant Is growing exceptionally well, most certainly you want to reuse that soil! without disrupting it too much.
thanks Jeff

No-no, the red ccd in my Panasonic took a shit, so I got a new HD disk drive doo-dad! It can record up to 33 hours of video and it's High Def too! Woo hoo
2 questions: first...Soma suggests soaking seeds in distilled water versus germinating between paper towels because once removed from the paper towels, the micro-roots can be damaged and invite disease. Have you ever noticed slow seedling growth as a direct result of such possible damage?
And secondly, this is the first tek I've seen which encourages taking off the seed shell and inner coating...is this only due to the age of the seedling? Or do you do this with every crop?
2-3 days really good thanks for fast reply your vids made me stay up all night smoking the sensimilai instead of going up to my girl lol oh well happy growing
class class fantastic roots ive never managed more than 5 ml root lenght before putting them in to soil wow. how long they in the bag for before there ready for soil? thanks ben
Hi JefTek. I don't know man about recycling that way whitout taking more roots out? I might not be publicly known but i grow the kind that is dank around here and i have to say if your ready to harvest 25% to 75% less buds its up to anyones but that is my observations that i have made on your topics over the years.
Seriously, the second time around the plants come out healthier and happier, after 3 times it is time to remove all roots, and 4th is time to start over. Try it, I would not accept 25 to 75% less anything! I want more, and get it.
i cut mine like that , then i sift out the other root pieces(i use a metal wire strainer with 1 cm holes), i shake out the pro mix, then reuse it after i get it good and loose again,
i thought i was the only guy doing this ! 3 times max no problem.I chop the roots up in the bucket though so It is not so compact for the new girl going in
sweet ! I recommend Sunshine Mix for a great money and time savings as well

No holes!
Just don't over water and you'll be fine.
Much - much less mess and hassle.

Botanicare...
They have a new line called "Organicare" that's 100% organic = works well.

I trust you but ,If no holes in the bottom how do you leach before harvest? About to start my 4th op.

Just don't go over 1000 ppm on the fertilizer and use plain water the last 4 weeks - comes out primo, no problemo!

Jef,
How often do you apply the D.E.? Just once as shown in this video, or do you add more throughout the life cycle of the new plant?
Do you still recommend foliar sprays (I was going to use Foxfarm's "Don't Bug Me" spray) in addition to the D.E. on the top of the soil?
As always, thanks for all the help! I'm going to have to name the 4 "mystery" seeds I recently got for my birthday after you and Michy!! :)

That ISS is some Vietnam weed.
When I smoke it, it takes me back to my past life, where I was killed in 'nam.
I get real serious, but I am ON POINT!
It is Really good if you smoke it before playing basketball.

I like your sprouting method.
I usually fold the paper towel. I will have to try it flat, in a ziploc.
I have learned from you before, through one of the stoner mags.
(whichever it was...)
ISS is my favorite strain right now. I have a steadily diminishing jar full. SO SWEET!
I actually got some hermaphoraditic flowers off of some of the buds with some tweezers and a keen eye. Think I should try to cross breed it?

Nice Dr. Tek - with some Cannazyme the soil shouldn't get too packed in 4 crops as the root channels (once the roots are eaten) are aeration zones!
