IMO the fighter jet will be only useful for ground attacks on insurgents, or threats from low tech neighbors such as Afghanistan. For any serious threat, Iran has to rely on missiles with something more than conventional warheads (biological, chemical, perhaps later nuclear) - e.g. to deter Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iraq, Turkey. For US threats, anti-ship missiles can easily sink a few tankers in the strait of Hormuz and stop the flow of oil, without even needing to attack military ships.

Let me guess, the Iranians can't get parts anymore for the F-5's GE J85 engines because they are obsolete. So, they put in two new engines which required a change in the tailplane. This leaves them with an aircraft of roughly similar performance, because you an only push a 40 year old design so far, which is still obsolete...

@JrGuacamoles I don't think you understand what it means that they've actually MADE it. The IRIAF has already undertaken a re-engine program for their F-14s. This has given them alot of experience with engine and control surface construction, and they've got an aircraft that can hold it's own against anything they're likely to come up against.
They've got Fulcrums, Tomcats, and Phantoms for air superiority. This thing's a light multipurpose/attack aircraft, like the British Hawk or the F-5.

While i do agree that the Saeqeh fighter is based on old airframes such as the F-5, i find your analysis of Iran's military a little simplistic. Indeed, this jet is all but the only one that the IRIAF operates. They have recently put a lot of F-14 back into service since they finally achieved self sufficiency in producing the needed spare parts. They also have a pair of squadrons of Mig-29s, and have upgraded both their existing Phantom and Tomcat fleet thanks to Russian assistance.
ANd you seem to consider the air force as the only military branch worth analysing in the event of a conflict, which is wrong by nature. Effectively, if wars could be won by air power alone, there are lots of wars both Israel and the US would have won so far, instead of failing (i.e. Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebannon, Kippur War, you name it). So if you evaluate Iran's strength, you'd definitly want to remind their arsenal of ballistic missiles too, namely the Sejil-2.
US military experts are wary or that fact, that is why they're putting so much effort into providing the region with cutting edge ABMs, and many of them believe that the recent breakthrought that represents the solid fueled missiles that Iran recently unveiled and demonstrated. Iran's military industry's efforts have long been concentrated into missiles and SAMs rather than pure air force, their development is only secondary for the time being, so i'm not suprised if the jets are not that new.
The Saeqeh is similar of the F/A-18 but the performance are superior according to a Russian military analyst from RIA Novosti. If Iran bough the Saeqeh in mass production this fighter will be a serious treat for every country (except against stealth fighter such as the F-35 and the F-22)
Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the Saeqeh a ground attack jet? If that's the case, it won't be dogfighting against an air superiority fighter. What do you say?
Anyway this fighter is an amelioration of the F-5 freedom fighter and replace the original tail by a mid-wing which give the fighter a better stability but the mid-wing also give a larger radar cross section . The Seaqeh have new intakes like the F/A-18 Hornet and have apparently a larger fuel tank than the original F-5 that give a longer range capacity ,according to Iran he can fly over 3 000 km and a combat radius of about 450 km.
I don't think Iranians can be proud about a modified copy of the famous freedom fighter but if they can modified a obsolete fighter into a 4.5th generation aircraft i won't imagine their famous stealth fighter prototype (only in scale model).
I can definitely see this fighter in that role. Makes perfect sense to me. Apparently the Iranians have modernized far more than we have have imagined. In another video on the Seaqeh, one young man claims one of his relatives had a chance to look at one of these jets up close, and said it has modern instrumentation with an all "glass cockpit". I guess they live in Iran or in the middle east somewhere. It was a production unit unlike the prototype in this video.
The fighter have a glass cockpit and modern combat and navigation computer but i presume the 20mm gun inside is the original from the F-5 freedom fighter. The radar is maybe the same but with greater capacity enough to track at least 10 or 15 target at once. Anyway the F-5 is a good fighter and we should not forget is the pilot which make the victory in a dog-fight not the aircraft. You can flew a 200 million dollars F-22 fighter and can be the worst pilot in history.

The Iranian plane is NOT the YF-17 and looks nothing like it. The F-5 with twin tails will also not pull high Gs like the newer American, French and Russian fighters.

That is a rumour that is unfounded. The chances of Iran making such a massive arms purchase are very low. If the Iranians took the threat to them seriously they would be trying to purchase the S-300 sam system instead of sitting back with 29 Tor-M1 systems. A massive strike by the U.S. would need a great air defence to repel the attack!
Designing/manufacturing fighter jets does not happen over night. It evolves over half a century. Iran may have assembled these but I don't believe even these primitive planes are designed/manufactured in Iran. Still it's commendable to copy as short cut to success. Japanse copied American cars and Koreans are copying Japanese cars. Iran was forced to become self-relient. All other countries buy thier plans from U.S. and Russia. Finally, machines may win battles but soldiers win the war

I delivered a Piper Seneca to an air charter firm in western iran in march this year, on the dispersal were 3 pre delivery saegehs painted in A/S grey, the crew chief let me have a look round it, and it looked ok. as for russian avionics thats not so, they have a copy of the pakistani F16 fit, but upgraged by japanese team working for the IiAF.
Totally. The IRIAF has reverse engineered almost all (if not all) of the components used in the Tomcat and Phantoms in service. They have have a huge industrial park in the capitol that spawned from the Bell factory built in the 70s. They make mean guided munitions and the Saeqeh is far more advanced than the F-5 it resembles. Underestimate Iran at your own peril folks. They know how to build decent weapons systems!
It maybe usful as a tactical support fighter but against a 4th or 5th generation fighter like Rafel, Typhon or an F-22 I'm more than a little skeptical. E
according to actual combat information two F5-E s can challenge and F15, so assuming Saeqeh is not much better F5-E, it is worth half an F15

@JrGuacamoles I don't think you understand what it means that they've actually MADE it. The IRIAF has already undertaken a re-engine program for their F-14s. This has given them alot of experience with engine and control surface construction, and they've got an aircraft that can hold it's own against anything they're likely to come up against.
They've got Fulcrums, Tomcats, and Phantoms for air superiority. This thing's a light multipurpose/attack aircraft, like the British Hawk or the F-5.

While i do agree that the Saeqeh fighter is based on old airframes such as the F-5, i find your analysis of Iran's military a little simplistic. Indeed, this jet is all but the only one that the IRIAF operates. They have recently put a lot of F-14 back into service since they finally achieved self sufficiency in producing the needed spare parts. They also have a pair of squadrons of Mig-29s, and have upgraded both their existing Phantom and Tomcat fleet thanks to Russian assistance.

ANd you seem to consider the air force as the only military branch worth analysing in the event of a conflict, which is wrong by nature. Effectively, if wars could be won by air power alone, there are lots of wars both Israel and the US would have won so far, instead of failing (i.e. Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Lebannon, Kippur War, you name it). So if you evaluate Iran's strength, you'd definitly want to remind their arsenal of ballistic missiles too, namely the Sejil-2.

US military experts are wary or that fact, that is why they're putting so much effort into providing the region with cutting edge ABMs, and many of them believe that the recent breakthrought that represents the solid fueled missiles that Iran recently unveiled and demonstrated. Iran's military industry's efforts have long been concentrated into missiles and SAMs rather than pure air force, their development is only secondary for the time being, so i'm not suprised if the jets are not that new.

The Saeqeh is similar of the F/A-18 but the performance are superior according to a Russian military analyst from RIA Novosti. If Iran bough the Saeqeh in mass production this fighter will be a serious treat for every country (except against stealth fighter such as the F-35 and the F-22)

Anyway this fighter is an amelioration of the F-5 freedom fighter and replace the original tail by a mid-wing which give the fighter a better stability but the mid-wing also give a larger radar cross section . The Seaqeh have new intakes like the F/A-18 Hornet and have apparently a larger fuel tank than the original F-5 that give a longer range capacity ,according to Iran he can fly over 3 000 km and a combat radius of about 450 km.

I can definitely see this fighter in that role. Makes perfect sense to me. Apparently the Iranians have modernized far more than we have have imagined. In another video on the Seaqeh, one young man claims one of his relatives had a chance to look at one of these jets up close, and said it has modern instrumentation with an all "glass cockpit". I guess they live in Iran or in the middle east somewhere. It was a production unit unlike the prototype in this video.

The fighter have a glass cockpit and modern combat and navigation computer but i presume the 20mm gun inside is the original from the F-5 freedom fighter. The radar is maybe the same but with greater capacity enough to track at least 10 or 15 target at once. Anyway the F-5 is a good fighter and we should not forget is the pilot which make the victory in a dog-fight not the aircraft. You can flew a 200 million dollars F-22 fighter and can be the worst pilot in history.

those russian jets are not bad. but the iranian pilots have not had the training in such an advanced jet. its a whole new way of thinking when using them. the Iraq's learnt that lesson and so will the iranians. its a matter of tactics. our pilots train daily using such tactics.

That is a rumour that is unfounded. The chances of Iran making such a massive arms purchase are very low. If the Iranians took the threat to them seriously they would be trying to purchase the S-300 sam system instead of sitting back with 29 Tor-M1 systems. A massive strike by the U.S. would need a great air defence to repel the attack!

Designing/manufacturing fighter jets does not happen over night. It evolves over half a century. Iran may have assembled these but I don't believe even these primitive planes are designed/manufactured in Iran. Still it's commendable to copy as short cut to success. Japanse copied American cars and Koreans are copying Japanese cars. Iran was forced to become self-relient. All other countries buy thier plans from U.S. and Russia. Finally, machines may win battles but soldiers win the war

For your information youtubers, just because the ruling elite of Iran are round the twist does not mean they cant build a decent aircraft... I delivered a Piper Seneca to an air charter firm in western iran in march this year, on the dispersal were 3 pre delivery saegehs painted in A/S grey, the crew chief let me have a look round it, and it looked ok. as for russian avionics thats not so, they have a copy of the pakistani F16 fit, but upgraged by japanese team working for the IiAF.

Totally. The IRIAF has reverse engineered almost all (if not all) of the components used in the Tomcat and Phantoms in service. They have have a huge industrial park in the capitol that spawned from the Bell factory built in the 70s. They make mean guided munitions and the Saeqeh is far more advanced than the F-5 it resembles. Underestimate Iran at your own peril folks. They know how to build decent weapons systems!
