@tlevids I agree completely. I understand when producers/directors have to cut long scenes due to time constraints and the fact that producers have money in stake in the film and essentially dumbing something like lotr down would get them a bigger audience other than us fantasy geeks but literally a few seconds extra footage would have explained his pessimistic/suicidal attitude so much more clearly.
@ojima510 The lord of the Nazgul is as powerful or more so than Gandalf the White, just as the Balrog was as powerful or more so than Gandalf the Grey - but he still managed to defeat the beast. In the book the Witch king doesn't actually manage to do him any harm, and you get the idea that Gandalf *could* have defeated him in desperate battle, because a) "No living man can defeat him," & Gandalf is a wizard, & b) when it comes to the showdown with Gandalf he flies off to pick on someone weaker
It's a shame that in the film it is never revealed that Denethor owned a palantir. Denethor's palantir explains why he had such a pessimistic outlook on the war- Sauron was basically using it to destroy his spirit and morale. A few extra seconds of footage showing him grasping at the palantir while burning to death would have been sufficient.
@Tlevids The LOTR films do hint at Denethor's ownership of a palantir. That is what he means when he asks Gandalf, "Do you think the eyes of the White Tower are blind?" and tells of his knowledge of Aragorn. He knows because he saw it in the palantir.
You know looking at the scene where Denethor is burning and literally runs the top floor all the way to the end of the pitfall. That's a pretty long path for someone on fire to be running and falling to the death. It's like he's on fire and it's not enough to die because he has to jump.
This is the most awesome and intense part of the whole book. I know changes have to be made for film adaptations, but why this scene!!!? And why so much!!??
In rode the Lord of the Nazgul. A great black shape against the fires beyond he loomed up, grown to a vast menace of despair. In rode the Lord of the Nazgul, under the archway that no enemy ever yet had passed, and all fled before his face.
All save one. There waiting, silent and still in the space before the gate, sat Gandalf upon Shadowfax: Shadowfax who alone among the free horses of the Earth endured the terror, unmoving, steadfast as a graven image in Rath Dinen.
from 4:55 is, for me, the saddest part of lotr. far more than that stupid parting of frodo where everybody cries. sadness does not only lie in crying... The final understanding of Denetor, that his son was alive all the time, and he would have brought senseless ruin upon either of them is the utmost heartbreak of Denethor, and that why I like him. He probably the most human example in Lotr. The example of how weak can a man become, if being clouded by defeat.
The Gondorian soldiers fought bravely, but theirs wasn't a fight to win, it was one to delay the Orcs until the refugees could get to safety. Besides, how would you feel if you had savage monsters coming at you, biting and slashing like wild animals?
The amount of people who have gotten it wrong about Gandalf in this video astounds me.
Gandalf, was an Istari yes, which is a type of Maiar, Sauron is also a type of Maiar whom became more powerful due to his turn to Darkness.
Gandalf when he ascends to become Gandalf the white, becomes something more than a Maiar, Tolkien himself said that Gandalf was a 'Valar of sorts' Valar being more powerful than Maiar. He could easily defeat the WK, thats why this was left out the final film.
THANK YOU, FINALLY SOMEONE KNOWS ABOUT GANDALF!!! Gandalf is an Istari, a DEMI GOD, the Witch King is a Fucking MORTAL, A GHOST!! You Sir, Have given me Faith in this generationagain!!
Sauron is Greater than Gandalf Yes, But The Witch King ISN'T, It went Sauron-Sarumon-Gandalf, Gandalf then was ressurected/brought Back so it was Sauron then Gandalf.
Witch King is a Mere Mortal, Gandalf is STRONGER than The Witch King, Gandalf has one of the Elvish Rings as well as his own powers, Gandalf is a DEMI GOD.
Witch King Would Put up a grand fight, but in the end LOSE, Gandalf isn't a Mortal so he would win. It would be a great fight though.
In the book the Witch King doesn't break Gandalf's staff. That's because the books don't suck and use cheap tactics in order to "move" the viewer/reader. If it weren't for Ian Mckellen and the others' performances, this would have been a god awful series of adaptations.
Doesn't matter who Sauron gave power to. Gandalf is an Istari- he quite literally was a god or "angel". And no one has the authority to break his staff.
@CaliHighinWhittier WRONG. By that extremely flawed logic, every one of Sauron's magical minions would be more powerful than Gandalf. If so, he would have succeeded long ago.
In one-on-one combat, Sauron-without-the-ring would probably be about equal to Gandalf the White. But even if not, he doesn't have that kind of power to give away, even to the greatest of his minions.
@CaliHighinWhittier Furthermore, in the Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf says something that implies that, mounted, Glorfindel and Aragorn could stand against nine Nazgul on horses. Nine. In my opinion, it's an exaggeration, but it can't be entirely misleading or Tolkien wouldn't have written it. Glorfindel is about as powerful as Gandalf the Grey. Gandalf now has more power. OK?
Yes. You see in the book they were killing five orcs for every one of them that fell. For some irritating reason Peter Jackson made them appear like a bunch of incompetents and gave ALL the glory to the Rohirrim. He also made Denethor into a villan; he was a much better chap in the book. Don't ask me why he did these things, but it pissed me and a lot of other fans off.
