@whichoney have you seen any of his shows? Buffy was a cult classic and i will admit the last 4 seasons were kinda bad but that so was amazing. Angel was an amazing show that was nominated for an Emmy and was a darker side of the Buffy craze. Firefly was just amazing. Dollhouse never got a chance to develope as a show. And Dr.Horrible's Sing Along Blog is one of the best thing on the internet.
What this says to me is that Joss just wasn't done exploring the themes integral to 'firefly' ten years ago...Of course the ideas have mutated somewhat:
1. big evil corporations sucking the souls out of people (kidding, he just likes this, and it's handy)
2. The concept of the perfect date--the illusion of intimacy through the experience of prestige and control.
3. Ку́рам на́ смех. Nuff said.
I wish they would just let him do his thing sometime, uncurtailed, and give us more brilliant.

Victor (Enver Gjokaj) and Sierra (Dichen Lachman) became one of my favorite TV couples ever. All the cast was great except for the guy who played Topher. He was so annoying and his acting was weak
In some moments Dollhouse reminded me my favorite TV shows of the 90's - La Femme Nikita, The Pretender, Spy Game and even RoboCop: The Series
I really think this show could have realized more of its potential if it had been allowed more time. It constantly keeps you questioning your ideas of reality - what is your personal identity? Is the Dollhouse moral? How do we control technologies that could help us and also hurt us? I think it's remarkable that a television show can explore these questions, and think it's a pity that the rest of the country doesn't seem as interested in it as I am.
Hmmmm... Fox mucking Joss Whedon about I heard that before.... Was very similar with Buffy the Vampire Slayer but the show was just too darn good for them to stop it. All of the best series that I've discovered, for the first time sadly, over the past year (Arrested Development, Firefly, and Dollhouse mostly) were on Fox and were canceled. And they were all smart, funny, and innovative. Fox apparently doesn't understand shows like that, and they should hand those shows over to someone who does, imo.

@Kijinn Trust me, this recap doesn't do the show justice. Characters such as Topher, Adelle and season 2's Bennett (played by Summer Glau, which is reason enough to love her) are among the best I've seen on television.

I'm already impressed heroes is lasting as long as it does. When the whole time traveling and history / future correcting came around I loved the fact that these kind of plots tred outside of sci fi realms like star trek etc. But now it's almost as if they are trying to find more soapy things.
With dollhouse' double bottom of "technical spiritality" I'm not surprise it gets canceled so easily
I hope this show finds a way to survive. The writing is EXCELLENT, and the direction is EXCELLENT. Also, the wardrobe person is EXCELLENT(for the girls; I don't care what the guys wear..). And, the fight scenes are absolutely the best staged events ever undertaken by mortals.
I may be the only person on earth who never has watched an episode of "Buffy..." I hadn't realized Whedon's connection to that show before I fell in love with Dollhouse. Whether Dollhouse survives or not,Whedon will be back with something soon. It must be an incredible bitch,though,to have to abandon(yet again)everything it takes to build a great show. I especially love how generous he's been to ALL of the actors as the deadline for the show's premature ending bore down on him,the writer.

I found "Dollhouse" late,and only because I wanted to update the crush I've had on Dushku since she played Arnold's daughter way back in the day. She grew up nicely. Amazing how you just throw a little water on it,let some time pass,then..BAM!--a woman where a kid once stood. Now I'm a great admirer of Olivia Williams. I'm very impressed with how MUCH acting she manages using just her eyes. Plus,she's very smart.
I'm thinking that by the time I get to see it,everything that went into producing it(including the people)has long since been paid for completely. I really don't believe Hollywood or TV ever loses money on any investment.

echo was able to fully trust Boyd, like a father, and connect with Paul despite not knowing who she is. the idea of actives, is that they are supposed have human instincts and nothing else - no memories, no souls, nothing.but i kinda understand what your saying cos each episode i was hoping caroline would wake up, but it became clear half way through season 1 , that that wasnt gonna happen anytime soon.
what i find really interesting about this show is that the technology that is being explored, is not that far from becoming a reality. apparently scientists are already able to erase the memories of certain animals by using a protein. the fact that joss and eliza were able to come up with this show and still relate it to today's society and technology is amazing. when theres power, theres always people who abuse it, and dollhouse really explores that concept

Really I liked her as Faith and I think she can pull off some of the personalities but others are not so good! I think the show would have done better with a different actress.

Yes it does and if i read correctly it will air an episode (#13 Epitah one) otherwise not aired in the USA due to contractual complications but will be in the DVD box set when sold.

technically episode 12 is the real last one, episode 13 was only made because FOX didn't count the pilot as the starting episode being #1. Even though the pilot is the first episode of the show. I also did see the 13th episode, it was really good actually, just left a lot of questions.

In terms of personal identity Dollhouse uses the memory criterion. Are you a different person if you have different memories? Each imprint is essentially a different person. And Echo is different to Caroline. When they do a wipe have they killed someone?
The Dollhouse asks you to question everything, and like Whedons other shows it tells you that life is not just black and white, everything is just shades of grey. It is a complex show where noting is as it seems.
An active voluntarily signed away their own freedom for five years, in return they get whatever horrible situation they landed in sorted out, and they get reimbursed with quite a lot of money. And they dont remember anything for those 5 years, to them it seems like only a few seconds from when they first got into the chair. (However this is not what happened to Sierra who was forced into the Dollhouse).
The Rossum Corp. comes off as a modern day saviour, with the slogan minds matter and Clive Ambrose (the face of the Corp.) has won a Nobel Prize. They are a drug company that is based in the US. But we do not know what exactly they are working towards. We dont know whether they are good or bad, but we do know they have been testing on animals and human foetuses.
Its all about the moral ambiguity of the dollhouse and what makes you you?
Consequently, Alpha was imprinted with all 48 imprints at once. He managed to escape (after killing most of the people both staff and actives inside the dollhouse). He is thus considered to be a rogue active but continues to have an unhealthy attachment to Echo.
There are Dollhouses all over the world. The capital that the Dollhouses generate from their engagements funds the work of the Rossum Corporation.
When he heard that Whiskey was the best active he went all psycho and slashed her face asking her if she would allow Echo to number one. The Dollhouse staff, did not realise that the Dolls were becoming self aware and thought that one of Alphas previous imprints had not been completely wiped away. So they decided to look at all his previous engagements to see which one had caused it. But because Alpha did not want to go in the chair, there was an accident and the machine broke.
It appears that even in their wiped state, the dolls are at least partially self-aware. As seen by Echo, Alpha, Victor and Sierra. Sierra and Victor have a connection; it looks into the idea of soul mates. Echo becomes increasingly self-aware over the course of the series. Alpha was previously an attempted murderer. He created an attachment to Caroline when she first came to the Dollhouse, and he wanted Echo to be the best.
The concept of the show is: There is a business called the Dollhouse that has the technology to wipe away someone's memories and imprint them with new ones. Certain people can pay a large amount of money to rent out these 'dolls' to be whoever they want them to be for a short time - i.e. a day or a weekend.
Paul Ballard is an FBI agent trying to find the truth of it. He believes it is immoral and has created an emotional link to Caroline who he sees as the damsel that needs to be saved.
I'd pay the dollhosue to give me brains of Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton. Seriously the goofy leaps in technology are so unreal.
Ironic/sad thing is, I bet 1000's of people around the world would put themselevs forward to become a doll if a dollhosue were to exit given the social breakdown/depression and massive unemployment.
Im obsessed with the dollhouse despite its creepy and disturbing concept. However the technology of implanting personalities and information into brains world be millions of years away at least, why go to school when you simply can implant the knowledge, the human race would effectively become smarter than aliens if that technology did exist, who needs tropher when you can pick a bum off the street and implant his technical/scientific expertise.

I heard it's getting Cancelled!! and that there's another episode they didn't even air. Even they admit they started too slow. My impression is (based solely on this recap), that the series lacks the type of "hero" characters, that were present in Whedon's other series.
I had to see 4 episodes of Firefly, before I started liking its chars. So I could be wrong here, too.
But in the recap, I couldn't find a reason to care for any of the chars..or even the story, by the by. Could that be Dollhouse's weakness?

even though they are making a lot of progress, the dollhouse technology is far far away and probably will never exist.
I agree it's an interesting idea, and that it has relevance to our developing technological world, but not because brain wash is around the corner.

Really I liked her as Faith and I think she can pull off some of the personalities but others are not so good! I think the show would have done better with a different actress.

akaezzaka, It was shown on Sci Fi on Tuesday's at 9, it ended last week, I think repeats are still showing from time to time though, get the DVD when it's out, it's an awesome show! :)

Yes it does and if i read correctly it will air an episode (#13 Epitah one) otherwise not aired in the USA due to contractual complications but will be in the DVD box set when sold.

Well done. I was wondering if you or anyone else possibly knows that very tranquil but eerie sounding music. It plays often in this recap. The specific part of the music I'm referring to you'll hear at like 5:40 or 8:20. If anyone happens to know, please let me know. I think this show has such a great sounding score.

technically episode 12 is the real last one, episode 13 was only made because FOX didn't count the pilot as the starting episode being #1. Even though the pilot is the first episode of the show. I also did see the 13th episode, it was really good actually, just left a lot of questions.

In terms of personal identity Dollhouse uses the memory criterion. Are you a different person if you have different memories? Each imprint is essentially a different person. And Echo is different to Caroline. When they do a wipe have they killed someone?
The Dollhouse asks you to question everything, and like Whedons other shows it tells you that life is not just black and white, everything is just shades of grey. It is a complex show where noting is as it seems.

An active voluntarily signed away their own freedom for five years, in return they get whatever horrible situation they landed in sorted out, and they get reimbursed with quite a lot of money. And they dont remember anything for those 5 years, to them it seems like only a few seconds from when they first got into the chair. (However this is not what happened to Sierra who was forced into the Dollhouse).

The Rossum Corp. comes off as a modern day saviour, with the slogan minds matter and Clive Ambrose (the face of the Corp.) has won a Nobel Prize. They are a drug company that is based in the US. But we do not know what exactly they are working towards. We dont know whether they are good or bad, but we do know they have been testing on animals and human foetuses.
Its all about the moral ambiguity of the dollhouse and what makes you you?

Consequently, Alpha was imprinted with all 48 imprints at once. He managed to escape (after killing most of the people both staff and actives inside the dollhouse). He is thus considered to be a rogue active but continues to have an unhealthy attachment to Echo.
There are Dollhouses all over the world. The capital that the Dollhouses generate from their engagements funds the work of the Rossum Corporation.

When he heard that Whiskey was the best active he went all psycho and slashed her face asking her if she would allow Echo to number one. The Dollhouse staff, did not realise that the Dolls were becoming self aware and thought that one of Alphas previous imprints had not been completely wiped away. So they decided to look at all his previous engagements to see which one had caused it. But because Alpha did not want to go in the chair, there was an accident and the machine broke.

It appears that even in their wiped state, the dolls are at least partially self-aware. As seen by Echo, Alpha, Victor and Sierra. Sierra and Victor have a connection; it looks into the idea of soul mates. Echo becomes increasingly self-aware over the course of the series. Alpha was previously an attempted murderer. He created an attachment to Caroline when she first came to the Dollhouse, and he wanted Echo to be the best.

The concept of the show is: There is a business called the Dollhouse that has the technology to wipe away someone's memories and imprint them with new ones. Certain people can pay a large amount of money to rent out these 'dolls' to be whoever they want them to be for a short time - i.e. a day or a weekend.
Paul Ballard is an FBI agent trying to find the truth of it. He believes it is immoral and has created an emotional link to Caroline who he sees as the damsel that needs to be saved.

I'd pay the dollhosue to give me brains of Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton. Seriously the goofy leaps in technology are so unreal.
Ironic/sad thing is, I bet 1000's of people around the world would put themselevs forward to become a doll if a dollhosue were to exit given the social breakdown/depression and massive unemployment.

Im obsessed with the dollhouse despite its creepy and disturbing concept. However the technology of implanting personalities and information into brains world be millions of years away at least, why go to school when you simply can implant the knowledge, the human race would effectively become smarter than aliens if that technology did exist, who needs tropher when you can pick a bum off the street and implant his technical/scientific expertise.

A-Ha!....I had you all going. It was picked up for "Season 2"- lol. They cancelled "Terminator: Sarah Conner Cron" instead.....so if Joss fails to deliver he'll have the death of "Dollhouse" and be responsible for killing off "Terminator".
Fox will make it's annoucement shortly. So Yeah....All You "Terminator" & Summer Glau fans?....blame "Dollhouse" for sucking up all the budget money- lol.

LIke reality-show cheap. The max it cost to produce an episode is 1million dollars.( That's cheap).
tscc was way more costly to make so FOX, being the asses they are, decided to get rid of Terminator. It was not Joss's fault. FOX's.

It's all BUT Cancelled! - they still have an episode they didn't air yet. And they rushed the season Finale to air - remember how "Firefly" episodes were handled?? before it's cancellation? It's done. WHY??
Do the Math - "Glee" (Special Preview 5/19) is really being Hyped! right? they want that "A.I." & "High School Musical" audience. If "Glee" has amazing numbers and tests well - "Dollhouse" is officially done. DH toke too long to get the story going! just like with "Firefly" Why make more?
