I want to get into the wedding photography field. My style of photography will be documentary/reportage.
Because (at the start for now anyway) I will only have one body can anyone recommend to me ‘one’ lens for the style that I want. Also, if I were to change lenses, one or two more lenses you can suggest.
the DOF is toooo shallow, at f/1.4-2.0 its just fucking ridiculous, its impossible to pull focus, and it doesn't even look like film... it just looks gross. I have a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 and it looks awesome. at 2.8, it looks like film, which is actually about the standard for pro films.
Someone please answer me!!: On a cropped sensor like the 7D, would a prime lens be too zoomed in to shoot casual video, lets say, at Disneyland at night? Would a 20/24/28/30mm zooms be more viable? And also, when you say primes are faster, do you mean "faster" as in higher aperture?? Or are they better in low light even at the same aperture as a zoom lens?
@xxbluejay21 a prime wouldn't be ideal for like family videos unless you went <50mm. when they say faster they mean primes have larger apertures so they are a few stops brighter than typical zoom lenses of the same focal length
I need some adapter, but this will increase the length from sensor, so it won't be a 50mm on the Canon body, but more. Am I wrong? How this should do best?
@SuperAlijoker I know. I've gotten a little better since 2009. Not much. These vids were usually an outline then fill in the blanks. Sometimes I just cant say something so it will be cut up accordingly. Yeah, bad I know.
i have got canon 7d.please tell me.first of all how can i load my video.should i open acvhd?and what are other selections.and what is convert selection for hd,good video.thanks.
I have a Sigma 30mm 1.4 but I really want a prime zoom lens, and one that will be able to be used in video really well and something good in low light. Suggestions? I was thinking of the Canon 24-70 2.6/L.
PS the only lens I have right now is a Sigma 30mm 1.4 with my Canon 7D body.
I´m confused between to get the 55mm 1.8 and the 35mm F/2 for shooting video. Can you help me with your opinion please? What is the difference? Thank you for the videos!
Is it worth investigating wide angle screw on converter lenses? Or would they effect the speed of the lens too much? Are there any you would recommend?
Would you discourage trying out any wide angle screw on converter lens things? Would they effect the speed of the lens? Would they bring your lens down to a level where you'd notice it not as sharp even in video? Are there any that you would recommend?
Hey i like to take outdoor photos of wildlife and things like that, what lens would i use for taking really far still shot photos? Then would a lens like that work for video? I use the canon 7d
Man I love you!!! This is exactly what I was looking for!!! I'm planning on buying the CANON EOS 7D with a lot of effort and was wondering wich would be the best lenses for shooting video! AWESOME!!!
@experiment0003 you are an asshole-why would you even say anything like this to a person trying to give you good advice. You are somebody the world can do without!!
That low-light sequence of shots has a great, creepy feeling. I'm in Kyushu, Japan at the moment and I just got my 7D over here last month. Amazing camera. I shot 35mm stills in film on my F-1 and SVHS video back in the States for years but this is a brave new world! Your series has good advice. I'll keep watching.
Guys, if you own a 7D then you may want a 30MM from Sigma it's only $479 and it's fast and is really a 48mm cause you are putting it on a 7D. 50mm may be too much if you already have a zoom lens.
I own a Canon 7D which I use mainly for video and was looking to invest in a great 'normal' lens.
i'm just curious. what song is that from the "max payne" example?
I'm having a lot of trouble looking for free (atmospheric) music outside of popular rock, techno, and classical songs that doesn't fit my videos at all. Where do you usually get your music from? Any good recommendations friend?
I'm curious as to what you do in post to compensate for the noise you get in low-light situations.
I have a 7D and was doing low-light tests, at an iso of 640, and they seem nosier than the clip you show here. Is this because the HD on youtube just isn't up to scratch?
I am planning on getting the 7D for video, and I was told to get the 50mm 1.4 but, I saw the same thing in 1.8 as you mentioned. What is the difference?
The 1.4 was $450, while the 1.8 was $120. Is it that big of a difference, is it worth that much extra money?
Nice video. But could you talk more about the older lenses? I've heard some of the older lenses have compability issues w/ AF & some won't work. What are some of the series of "older lenses" that you refer to specifically?
I ask cause w/ the megapixel issue I was skeptical, but if some older lenses can be used, then it'd save a bundle & increase options greatly.
You can get the 1.4 for under 400, I think it worth it. The 1.4 allows you to manual focus while AF is switched on which is really nice for videoing. Also on the 1.8 the focusing ring is at the end of the lens and is vary small, you have to be very careful not to get your fingers in the shot. I say go for the 1.4 if you can afford it, plus its built a lot better.
maaan i've been waiting for this one forever, thank you! I got a quick question, what kind of PC video editing machine would you recommend I am looking for something affordable, because my computer just cannot work with the footage without stuttering or freezing my whole system.
something with at least 3 gigs of ram a big hard drive and a dual core processor of 2.5ghz or higher. if you can afford it get a core i5 processor, ESPECIALLY if its HD video.

Dude you are a big help Thanks.
BTW what do you think about instead of getting the 7d why not purchase two t2i? whats the main difference just dealing with video? thanks again.
AcunaMedia 1 year ago
@AcunaMedia
Main difference is that with the 7D you can shoot in the rain. But a plastic bag (or a thinktank hydrophobia) will solve that for the 550D.
7D is more for stills.

I can't get an answer to this question, either.
I know that I can't pin a Frank Sinatra track to my video clip (copyright protection).
But I am unable to get a response from anyone if I can use an Akira Wing or a Tom Tykwer clip to my vids.
A little voice tells me I should not do this.
How do I learn what audio tracks are available to freely use?

whats the difference between the canon 50 mm and the nikon 50mm?
ptmknm 2 years ago
Not a whole lot. The main difference is that with the canon you'll be able to communicate with the lens.
However, that may not be important if you plan on doing mainly video, since you'll want to focus manually.
nuxxun 2 years ago
Great information and presentation. Now I know I really would rather purchase the 7D vs. the 50D.

I say it's better to just get the 1.8 and grab an additional lens, like the sigma 30mm with the money you save.

Great vid man! Quick question. In video mode for the 7d do you have to manual focus only or is there an AF option? Thanks!
ericEsilva 2 years ago
AF does not work very well. It probably would never be useful while recording because it is so slow.

You can get something surprisingly close to your footage with a good fixed f/2.8 zoom lens. But of course, nothing beats prime speed.
