Cockatiels usually eat ANYTHING you put in front of them. If he were starving, he probably wouldn't have vibrant colors. They love food. And pet birds may not understand what a human is saying, but they do recognize tones of voice(:
@ohshittkailaaa You're far away from the truth. Even tho i would love if that was true, but it isn't. Cockatiels actually don't like all the food you give them. If they don't like it,they'll rather starve to death than eat it. In my case,my 1 yr. old female resists to eat anything that is not seed. I try to make her eat vegetables and fruit, but she is so stubborn and keeps resisting. But i keep giving her fruit and veggies, hoping one day she'll take it.
Hey guys! im hoping to get a cockatiel soon! please email me some tips/tricks/websites/etc. on cockatiels and for cockaiels...ONLY! lol...please email as soon as u can anything ur willing to share! thanx!
I use clicker training, which you can read up about online. There's a yahoogroup called bird-click that has a lot of good information. You break the trick up into small pieces, and teach it step by step. Touch the ball, pick up the ball, walk with the ball, walk towards the hoop, touch the hoop with the ball, and finally put the ball in the hoop. You just need to gradually push the bird to the next step once it masters the previous one.
Kewl! I named mine BB it was penut because the hair on top of there head reminded me of PENUT on jeff dunnum :) but now its BB pernounced BEE BEE :) when i move to ohio in about a month i am buying a huge cage for her then buying her toys and a sister! so shes not alone :)!
I think im gonna get another younger cockatiel if your way doesn't work, cause mine is a 1 year old female...because i dont want anything to happen to it becase it doesn't eat enough. wow, im amazed you replyed so fast, so thank you
1 year old is plenty young, and any bird's diet and behavior can be altered with time and patience. If you want more help, you can join a community like 'parrot_lovers' or 'cockatiels' on livejournal. Either one will be able to offer you a lot of good advice!
I decided to exchange my bird and got a a young 2 -3 month old. it is just the perfect little cockatiel. it LOVES millet, just like u said most of them do, and seemed to have no problem adjusting. it spends most of its time, sitting ontop of its cage.
i've had my cockatiel for a couple days now. it has come out of its cage two times now, (i left the door open so it could do that) and it has come onto my finger twice. It is very hard to get it on my finger cause whenever i put my hang infront or her she turns away..same thing happens when i try to give her treats. How can i get her to take the treats or some onto my hands?
It helps if you find out what treats are the most rewarding for /her./ ;) Millet spray is usually the best, because 99% of cockatiels love it, and it can put a little distance between your hand and the bird when rewarding the bird. Makes it easier to reward skittish birds.
To find out if she likes millet spray you can put a few items in a dish (sunflower seeds, millet spray, and piece of PLAIN popcorn, for example) to see what she eats first. That will be your reward. Remove the reward from the bird's regular diet. Next you can reward her for spproaching your hand, touching your hand, and finally stepping up onto your hand. Break the behavior down into steps and you'll see progress faster!
wow, thank you for replying, i wll try that, but i dont think that the birds is eating from the foods dish....i wil try your idea. by the way..i dont think my bird likes millet spray when i offer it just tastes then turns around, or just doesn't take another bite. The only thing i ever saw it eat, is seeds and stuff attack w/ honey onto a stick.

Of course the bird will do that if you half starve it to death. I don't think the yelling of "good boy" is going to help.

In this video, it's seed mix on a spoon. Sometimes he gets millet spray or pieces of salt-free chips or crackers.
