  • My high school Wind Ensemble is working on this peice right now for our trip to Boston for the Heratage Musical Festival. I'm first flute and today in our lesson we were working on the first set of runs in the beginning. But overall as a band we're sound fairly good. Hard peice though!

  • i had the bass clarinet solo :]]!!

  • @iamnothier bass clarinet ftw

  • go baris :D

  • Gah! Almost every set of 16-th notes in the melody are rushed! As a matter of fact, pretty much everything rushes and the director sets it right at the ends of the phrases...

  • @lpreams Welcome to a high school honor band.

  • Our middle school wind ensemble is playing this for UIL. My favorite part is about 6:10 to 6:22

  • How many rehearsals for this devilishly complex piece? This ensemble does very well for the relatively small amount of rehearsal time. I had a blast playing the 1st trumpet part with the Pine Bluff, Arkansas Symphonic Band in 1968. I hope all these passionate and accomplished Wyoming All-Staters did too! Thanks for posting it, Burgerbob22.

  • Probably five or six hours, max. Thanks!

  • IM LAST CHAIR EUPHONIUM TOO!!!

  • We should start a club!

  • Hey I'd take bad trumpets over squeaky clarinet any day!

And the low brass section ROCKED

  • Thanks man!

  • I'm a bassoon player.

2:50 is the best part of the whole piece.

    lol jk

    but bassoons rock fyi

    :P

  • your percussion doesn't seem to quite know what they're doing, the break kept shaking apart.... and what were they using in place of a gourd?

  • @s0ckninja They're using a metal gourd.

  • from 5:51 to 6:01 rhythm and timing was terrible

  • Thanks?

Pretty sure we can all hear it.

  • very nicely done. I thought I was the only person out there that thought this piece was IT! When I performed it back in 1985. I have one thing to say to the woodwinds-bar 115- it use to haunt me.. Great job guys.

  • I love the song, but your trumpets are terrible! Although, you totally beat our band overall.

  • yeh they are kinda terrible

  • omg i'm first chair bass clarinet at my school and of course i adore this song.!!!!!!!!!!! Except that extra long trill at 32 for the b.c.'s

  • were doing this in my school, i play 2nd trumpet. ive had trouble finding a recording where you can actually hear the bass clarinets at the very beginning, but thats okay. love this peice

  • Isn't it fun? I wish I could play it again. It's been a while.

  • Yeah it's obvious that this wasn't performed in a proper auditorium or an auditorium at all. I love how this band interpreted this song, exactly like how my school's wind ensemble did it last year. A good interpretation is done by the Illinois State University that you can find on iTunes. The USAF band one is cleaner but the interpretation isn't my favorite.

  • Yeah, this was in the standard "gymatorium" setting. Not the greatest for clarity.

  • Aww, I wish they wouldn't make ALL STATE bands play in gyms! Sorry 'bout that. In the Massachusetts All State Band, we play at Symphony Hall in Boston.

  • No worries, dude, there just aren't a lot of venues in Wyoming. I wish we hadn't too.

  • Yes! Playing in a gym is always unfortunate. Get volunteers to hang cloth on the walls! :-) Overall nice job.

There is a pretty good version of this by UTEP on youtube though intonation is poor in spots.

  • This was my favorite to play that year even tho i had that wicked solo in america variations!

  • Hell ya.

  • u guys sounded ok. i think it wouldve sounded better if it wasnt in a gym

  • Tru dat.

  • I played this piece in high school many years ago and can attest to its high degree of difficulty. There are a few ragged spots in this performance, but for a group of high school kids to perform it up to tempo as well as this group did is certainly an achievement. Every one of those kids deserves to be congratulated on an exceptional effort.

  • Thank you!

  • Omg I hated the long flute trill and thats about it lol. Everything else I love about this peice.

  • I love this song!! I was the flute/piccolo player. That is one of my fave songs to play. :)

  • Oh! My favorite song!

    I play the perc.

    This is very very dificult......

    but I love this song!

    English is dificult too.

    Sorry(^^;

  • What part? I mean, you need at least three or four people to get all the parts for this in percussion. I did tympani. Funfunfunfun

  • the bass trombone part in this song is badass

  • I wish i could have played it... our trombones weren't quite up to par.

  • the symphonic band i am in definitely just played this at festival... i love the bass clarinet part, it was so much fun to play! i will most definitely miss it

  • Heck, I loved the bass clarinet part.

  • woooo go bass clarinets

    =]

  • Hmmm, I couldn't really hear the slap stick until 6:00...

  • It comes in a little early, but the image is still up when it goes off. I'm suprised that youtube didnt screw up the timing more.

  • HAHA ya I was in this band playing the tuba..nice job with the mute pic there when it was dropped..very funny

  • Yeah, that was my friend... he was a second trumpet, next to the tubas, with the black lacquer and gold Martin trumpet.

  • hey we played this for band contest. i love this song.

  • I play the claves in this song and it's kinda hard to keep your focus. Good job by the way.

  • You too! you were much more noticeable, I would think.

  • damn i was in the '06 allstate band. this would have been a lot of fun to play especially the percussion

  • Woo go euph :D

  • tempo is kind of shaky through out the song

  • Ill let you guess how many hours the band got to practice this piece.

  • My high school band is erforming this for adjudication along with Psalm for Band

  • fantastic--it brings back memories of when our high school band played it in the mid-70's. Thanks for sharing it.

  • That's why I do it!

    You're welcome.

  • okay cool.... umm...if you dont mind my asking.... who are you....

  • ya i was first chair flute in the band, and got the four yr all state award. 3 yrs in the band...1 in the orchestra. what grade are you in

  • I'm a senior now, I made choir two years ago, euphonium in the band last year, and bass trombone in the orchestra this year.

  • I was in that band... but I hated that we performed in a gymatorium as my band calls it. This song was definitely a good one though. But I still loved All State best my freshmen year in Gillette.

  • Before Laramie? or two years before?

  • Laramie was the Next year. When I was in 8th grade...it was in Evanston, then Gilette, then Laramie, Then Rock Springs, then Sheridan. but when it was in Laramie I was in the Orchestra, not band.

  • Did you make it to Sheridan this year? I was third/bass trombone for the orchestra.

  • I'm an oboe player, and in our band, we are playing this. But it's so hard! There are so many sixteenth notes. It's gonna take a lot of practice.

  • mm I have to play this for Honor Band--8th grade.

    >_>; Super hard. XP

  • We played this my freshman year of high school...it took some work, but we did it! It is so much fun to play. This brings back memories.

  • Haha our band director is thinking about having us play this song for a spring concert lol we are only in ninth grade what is he thinking :P

Other than that it is a really neat piece i like it alot.

  • we just started working on this like two days ago in band...not so good so far...this song is insane as it is, not to mention the fact that our trumpet, flute, and trombone sections pretty much suck...don't know how well this will turn out.

  • this is a monster trombone part.. when we played this in All-state highschool it was tough for some of them. The percussion in this song is huge too, because so many of the winds reaction relies on listening to them. I played the Alto Saxophone and the woodwinds in general had very tough passes throughout the entire song ;)

  • oh yeah i know, i play the alto sax. helo crazy sixteenth runs.

  • Wow! My absolute favorite concert band piece that we played during my high school band years. I play flute/piccolo and I'm so glad that I kept copies of my music. I often warm up with this piece and I also like Variations/Korean Folk Song. Great to hear the whole orchestration again!

  • Nice with the diasshow.. I played the trumpet in this piece on a music camp, its a really fun piece. this was a really nice performing

  • Thanks! it was a LOT of fun to play.

  • Does ANYONE know where I can get a recording of Overture on a Musical Comedy by John Barnes Chance???

  • I can't find it ANYWHERE. Have fun! Not that I am the most qualified person to know.

  • !!!

We played a version of this once!!! I can't remember when, though...

    :(

  • Cool!!

  • lawlz i thought the straight mute pic was funny.....considering i dropped it XD

  • yupz, it was hard to time right lolz.

  • wrong. needs words. get a new musical dictionary

  • Fine, it's my fave composition of all time. Get a life.

  • good job anyways

  • lol thanks, do you play anything?

  • euuuuuuuuuuphonium

  • favorite songs of all time? im pretty sure this isnt a song

  • ??? you lost me...

  • look up the definition of a "song". this is not a song

  • musical composition, opus, piece of music, composition, piece - a musical work that has been created; "the composition is written in four movements"

All in definition of a song. It doesn't have to have words...
