Ozzy has said on the Howard Stern radio show many times that Mountain gave Sabbath their first break in the US. Sabbath opened for Mountain in their first US gigs. Leslie, Felix, Corky, and Steve WERE MOUNTAIN. And Mountain was BAD ASS. Ozzy and Jack Bruce were HUGE Mountain fans.

Leslie can go deep every bit as good as Iommi but he could also climb into the sweetest blues, something NOONE ELSE could do better.

thats a great question, and the answer will surprise you. Black Sabbath was formed in 1969, but has had over 22 band members. Their 1st album that took off was in 1970. Mountain was formed in 1969 also, but their album Mountain hit big in the same year AND they actually played Woodstock in only their forth live gig. So technically speaking it was Mountain that struck 1st.

... that being said though Black Sabbath, like Mountain... were extremely influential. Ozzy would tell you it was Mountain they enjoyed the most out of all the American rock groups. Ozzy and Leslie are very close to this day... even performing "Mississippi Queen" and "Monsters of War" on their most recent albums..

Oh if "evil" is your question, well then yes, Black Sabbath was 1st... but if its HEAVY it was Mountain. See Leslie West always steered clear of the "evil" stuff... West's contribution was unique... he infused the blues in almost everything he ever recorded, even the heavy stuff. With Felix's expert knowledge of the blues, rock, jazz, he made sure Leslie stayed at the forefront of the hard rock guitarists, teaching Leslie to focus much more on tone, vibrato, and improv than the others.

The drums don't sound particularly powerful. Leslie West also had a better guitar sound back in the Sunn days, but I guess for practical reasons he can't really go on tour with those anymore.
