Somewhere between the end of Vol #8 here and the beginning of Vol #9, there’s a huge gap. Many events left out. Like the two air strikes originating from the carrier Ark Royal and the torpedo hit in the rudder that spelled the end for the Bismarck. Are the Vol’s mis-numbered or what?
In the end this great invincible, impregnable, Gotterdammerung symbol of Nazi glory was doomed by a single torpedo from an obsolete biplane and then blown to hell by the 16 inch guns of the Rodney. Compare that with what the very efficient U.S. naval carrier force had to throw at Musashi and Yamato, or even Mogami, to put them away. Or what the Japanese had to mount to sink Prince of Wales and Repulse. I don't understand this Nazi worship.
@yamsid erm if youre trying to say that bismark was easy to sink it was more complicated than just "a torpedo from a bi plane then pounded by the shells of rodney" the torpedo shot was a lucky one, the bismark spent the entire night afterwards being harrassed by RN destroyers and next day there were several battleships and cruiser firing on the bismarck for sevral hours striking her about 300-400 times with various calibre of shells .. hence much of the "nazi worship" as you ignorantly put it
@GamingLeeLee Fifteen hundred years of sometimes brilliant Germanic history, from Charlemagne to Bach, overshadowed by a decade or so following a psychopathic child molester In naval terms no one mentions how tough were the battleships and battle cruisers of the Kaiser's navy and how skillfully Hipper and Scheer managed to avoid annihilation by Jellicoe's fleet. Ah, but the Bismarck, it was a Nazi weapon and endowed with magic powers. Strange that is was sunk,
@yamsid yes it was sunk...but it took a lot to sink it it didnt just take a single ship. The awe surrounding bismark has nothing to do with it being a "nazi weapon" infact its design was begun before Hitler came to power. Speaking as brit for me its bismarks quality of design and her brave crew that signify the inspiration much like the hood or prince of whales.
And I agree it would be nice to hear more about ww1 german ships (infact ww1 in general) you would think it didnt exist sometimes
@GamingLeeLee Okay, I'm a sometimes hot head and we seem to have gotten off on the wrong foot and moreover you seem to know what you're talking about. Sorry. No argument about the courage of the Bismarck's crew or that of the sailors on Hood or the Rodney. I'm glad I have never been so tested. I am drawn to the stories of the First World War dreadnoughts of both sides. Heck, even the old king took his chances on Collingwood at Jutland and the fall of shot didn;t give a hoot for a crown prince.
@GamingLeeLee Afterthought. Have you ever wondered why movie and documentary makers have ignored some of the incredible stories of the First World War? Emden and Sydney. Weird old Spicer-Simpson dragging two motorboats across Africa to Lake Tanganyika. Konisberg rotting on the Rufiji. Or even old Canopus saving Sturdee's battle cruisers at the Falklands.
@yamsid its probably to do with the popular perception of ww1 compared to ww2, the men and their efforts were just as brave but ww1 is looked down on largely as a political war (which it was i suppose) rather than the battle for freedom that ww2 is often associated with. With public perception like that I would imagine film and documentary makers think ww1 wouldnt get the same attention, its all about the moneys dude :(

What a blunder. What would have been the outcome if the Bismarck maintained radio silence?
