I don't get why people feel the need tot pay for extra crap to carry around with them in their cars. I have a Diesel running on SVO, no extra tank, no heater system or anything, just put it into the tank and run it, its lasted over 150K Miles with no problems. Don't believe the hype about a heater system, its not needed.
@adamslurch71 depends on the car you have. new high pressure diesel engines are designed to give birth at the slightest hardship. so it really depends what it is running and running on
in the uk we pay road tax and its about 120£ a year plus the rate of tax on the fuel we run the car on is a 70%....the goverment wont let us use svo without paying that 70%... if we dont pay were breaking the law and they will take your car off you
Does it give the same mileage while running on the vegetable oil? My dad has a 2005 Golf TDI...same engine I believe. Car & Driver just did an article on how to convert a diesel engine to a veggie oil burner...seemed pretty simple actually. Nice work!
Suggest U consider not filling your diesel tank. Your car will do lots less foot pounds of work - thus better overall fuel mileage if you just add 2-3 gallons of diesel for start up and purge rather than carrying 10 gallons of non needed diesel fuel all the time.....
Vegetable oil is awesome, got some experience myself. Maybe about 10,000 miles so far. Drove 700 this weekend. WARNING> Change your engine oil more frequently ! Especially in a VW, some call for 10,000 mile oil changes.......not with veg oil. Change your engine oil 3000 miles or less or you will be screwing up your valves, friend of mine fryed his Passat Engine not having changed his oil more frequently then requested. Also, use a little marvel mystery oil in your motor oil to clean.
What is your source for this information? I would easily believe that he designed an engine for coal dust, but I do not believe that if it is true that it is the same combustion engine as one that runs on vegetable oil/ petrolium diesel. So if you could, please provide me your source, I'd like to see what you're talking about. Thanks.

these are so dumb it's cheaper and better for your car to just use biodiesel. the glycerin in the oil will create so many deposits in your engine. Just process your oil into biodiesle and you don't have to put all that dumb expensive crap in your car. greater complexity=greater risk of a malfunction.
SVO: Pay the price once to convert your car, never pay for fuel again.
Biodiesel: you have to buy the methanol and lye to process every gallon of fuel you're going to burn. Not to mention ALOT more time to process the oil.
SVO: Filter the oil and you're done.
Biodiesel: Filter the oil, then go through the process of transesterification, no thanks...

First is that the title says "SVO". That means virgin or "straight" vegetable oil. There are kits from Germany that are made to specifically run only new vegetable oil, but this is not one of them.
Second is his claim that he took the alternative fuel tax credit. That's great, unless he gets audited. Vegetable oil systems are NOT included in that bit of tax code, so good luck to him.
I wanna do this in my car however just worried that after buying everything and then setting everything up it would require so much filtering that is wont even be worth it.
Diesel is near $5.00/gal. You only need some bag filters, which cost about $5-$10 a piece, and can be cleaned and reused many times, at least 2 metal barrels (metal so hot grease from the fryer can be poured in), an electric or manual pump, and a conversion kit which you could put together on your own for about $700. It requires only one filtering through a 10 micron or smaller filter, and it is ready for use. If you're willing to give a little more of yourself, you can do this.
I heard VO destroys turbocharged engines. My diesel does 48-50 mpg, so I don't think I need to use VO. I think SUV's that do 8-10 mpg should be replaced with diesels, but then again I love TDI's so maybe it's better to drive a 10 liter V8...
The fuel you burn has nothing to do with the turbocharger. Turbocharged engines' heads and blocks are made with a harder alloy and therefore more heavy duty than naturally aspirated engines.
Your diesel is getting 48-50mpg burning filthy diesel fuel. Your mpgs are virtually unaffected when burning VO. People do it because it's cleaner and it's free. Biodiesel, which is simply VO with the glycerin exracted so it is less viscous, will actually clean out all the crap that diesel fuel deposits
Jetta is cool. Check out Edd china from Wheeler Dealers-he makes this guy seem like an amateur . The man is just sheer genius- what he doesn't know about engines could be written on a microbe.
Nice im running my car (toyota corolla with 2c engine) on a mix of 25% diesel 75% percent waste vegetable oil it starts up straight away but the engine labours because the engine is cold. i have to wait 5 mins for it to warm up and if i turn the egine off for 30mins i have to wait 5mins again. Once the engine is hot it runs just like running on straight diesel. I can hear the fuel pump working harder but there is no power loss like when i use to run it on biofuel i had 10-15% less power
Kudos to you for acting on behalf of the environment. However, if you continue to run your car this way, you will destroy the most expensive part of your engine: the injector pump. You should do it the right way and heat up the VO before injecting it.
As this type of fuel becomes more popular the price will go up. In my area there are restaurants that get paid for their oil and will no longer give it away for free. Needless to say they are making more money doing that than if they had paying customers such as myself.
The cost of fuel in the U.K. is definitely a pisser because of all the taxes but you do have some kind of national health care system to show for it right? We pay a lot less for fuel here in the states but we don't have nearly as much to show for it.
These solvents are all BS. Most of them contain gasoline, which should never be run in a diesel engine. VO must be heated before being injected into the engine, or else your diesel will meet a premature demise.
My '06 TDI Jetta runs on Svo too. Mine has the computer system which switches to and from diesel on it's own depending on the temp. So i don't have to watch the temp and manually switch over. So easy. We have a combo filtration system/pump in our shed, so we filter and fill up in one spot. We get our used oil from a Chinese restaurant near our house once a week, and it's more than enough. This is win win all the way.
this was extremely educational. this should be the next trend. there could be services that filter waste oil. or you could just do it yourself. but if you watch the driving to AK with vegetable oil, you'll find that the filtering process for waste oil is almost painstaking. fast food services and chinese restaurants go through enough oil to power a lot cars like this...to bad you need a diesel/turbo diesel
Umn, sorry man, but current parallel hybrids like the Prius do in fact derive ALL of their electricity from the gas they burn. I caught that error in his statements too. He should have reference full EV's which you plug in and charge off the grid. Those very much carry the question of road tax responsibility.
um ok........I'm not really worried about a queer looking prius that you would have to pay me to even be in one. I'm 17 years old guess what im going to buy with the money i'm saving up from my job....a muscle car such as a mustang, camaro, or firebird 66-84 range.
I might get less gas miliage but it is still cheaper. Because i don't have to spend 12 grand to get a prius instead get a mustang with a 302 in it and a 4 speed for 2450...
Whatever floats your boat man. I have a '73 Mach 1 with a 351 Cleveland 4 bolt. Thing is, I'd hate to have it as my daily driver, those old muscle cars suck ass in the rain and snow. I guess they also suck in any kind of corners too. ;)
Or, you could get a 2000-2003 VW TDI and trick it out so it blows the doors off of any old man hot rod. Easy to do, cheap, super high mileage, and not a rolling coffin. Just a thought. Check dubdubdub.forums.tdiclub.c0m Some super cool stuff.
351 cleveland sounds fun. The car i'm looking at is a lil more fuel efficent then yours but I'm 17 and still in highschool so they prolly would get the same gas mileage.
O and I don't have the money to get a jeta or w'e its called my price range is 2500 not more then that...

Rudolf Diesel's was interested in using coal dust OR vegetable oil and ended up using peanut oil for his engine.

coal dust first and vegetables oil after because the coal was abrasive and very dirty ( lot of residus in the combustion chamber)
