Harvey Mason was an original member of the Jazz group Fourplay. The lineup was Mason (drums), Bob James (keyboards), Lee Ritenour (guitar) and Nathan East (bass).
I don't know about a top tune nowadays. There just isn't a decent appreciation for this kind of music anymore. This particular song was remade back in '89 by Deon Estus, former bass player for Wham, on his album, Spell. The song only made it to #11 on the Adult Contemporary and #74 on the US R&B charts.
Nonetheless, it it is a cool song, and I'm glad to see that someone posted it out here for those who still appreciate this kind of music.
Don Estus wrote this and is the songwriter of this track, but it was featured on this album of Harvey Mason first called MVP IN 1981. Then in 1986, Don Estus put this out himself as a 12inch, which I have to say sounded even better then this track. But both tracks were written Don Estus, and both are just magical.
The 1980's were so good musically. Only the 1960's can ever better it.
Boy...I have been looking for this one for a LONG time! Thanks for posting...brings back found memories of my college days and listening to KBLX...when it WAS a good Radio station!!!
Slick song and overall production from H.Mason but the first version of this song that I heard was from Deon Estus(bassist for group Wham)-he definitely did it justice, check it out if you can find it.

Nice!
Also check out "No Man's Land" of his Harvey's "Earthmover" album. Mid 70's fusion with two other sick cats: Jan Hammer and Anthony Jackson

@JonP1961 Thanks for the heads-up on "No Man's Land". I hadn't heard that before- nasty.

Happy to spread the sound around! One of my favorites of his is "Phantazia" off "Funk In A Mason Jar" album. Super tight!

@popstapwb15 Harvey Mason is the good man who brought you Locksmith, as well as his own projects,
He is best known for his 1979 hit ''Groovin You'', which is sampled many times, most commonly for Gusto's "'Disco's Revenge"'
