Most people would absolutely love to use Linux, seriously! But the childish insulting will gain you no support.
Let's face it, Ubuntu as a mainstream OS failed period! More than 75% of users who bought computers with Ubuntu as their OS returned it or bought Windows instead. This is not meant as an insult, it's meant as a wake up call. If you want to gain acceptance as a viable OS it needs to be user friendly which most Linux OS's are not! I don't want to have to send Bash commands inside the shell to get a desktop or be able to use a program, it's ridiculous.
You have to love the denial of the Linux community. Most users are in fact used to Windows, because of that Linux is like a completely foreign language to those accustomed to point and click operations that Microsoft has developed succesfully for years to make computing easier for the end-users. I've been running Gentoo Linux for 7 years now, and have not looked back. My 8 YEAR OLD daughter uses Fedora on her laptop.. I know Ubuntu community can helpful, and should've just asked around the Ubuntu forums instead of calling the news station..

Unbelieveable, first of all there are plenty of computers available at the school. Second, if that is all it took to get her to "drop out" she is in trouble. I run into roadblocks at least twice a week; it is hard to graduate from college. She better learn to suck it up and just get the job done, or do not even bother.

Not something the average windows user knows how to do. Heck, even playing DVD's requires you to install some stuff at the command line in Ubuntu. You don't need to use the command line for installing the libdvdcss2 package. I found it quite easily in deb form using google. All I needed was to double click and it installed itself.
As for Netflix, you got me on that one, it sucks that we can't use Netflix natively in Linux. As for dual booting, most distro's now have the partition editor built in, and thus lets you allocate space and sets up dual booting,

Gee golly it so hard. Man oh man. Give me a break. Install your Windows OS first. Once that is done. Take your CD of Ubuntu, and put it in the machine, restart the machine. Go to install and it will ask if you want to install it alongside another OS. Select that option. Then it will let you adjust how much space you want to give each OS. Once your done that, it will partition the HDD for you and set up the bootloader for you. Is that so hard? NO.
And yet I have done this to 3 different computers, completely different hardware in each one and it installed each time with both Windows and Ubuntu each time.
So once again your full of shit, and it's about time you got called on it. Also you can't ruin hard drives by screwing up a install. You can always REWRITE THEM. That is HOW THEY ARE MADE. Try learning how modern computers even work, you just might get somewhere.

@seanhamson not quite. I use office and open office (same as libre office?) and there are small differences that can be very annoying. Some of the functions are not the same... Sub totals for example, Excel vs Spreadsheet. Icons are different (I just hover over them to figure out find the one I need). I own 4 macs and work with clients and vendors that almost all use PC's. Open office works for most things, but once and a while it will bite ya.

I use Ubuntu everyday. Yes, this kind of ignorance is annoying, but responding with hateful messages or trying to ridicule people for not understanding Linux just hurts Linux. Now the community is seen as vitriolic nerds with no tolerance for the technologically inept. That being said, nobody she talked to realized that she could just buy Windows separately and just install it? It's really easy, just go to CostCo or Walmart or Amazon. It couldn't be easier to buy and install. :)

Not something the average windows user knows how to do. Heck, even playing DVD's requires you to install some stuff at the command line in Ubuntu. You don't need to use the command line for installing the libdvdcss2 package. I found it quite easily in deb form using google. All I needed was to double click and it installed itself.
As for Netflix, you got me on that one, it sucks that we can't use Netflix natively in Linux. As for dual booting, most distro's now have the partition editor built in, and thus lets you allocate space and sets up dual booting,

Gee golly it so hard. Man oh man. Give me a break. Install your Windows OS first. Once that is done. Take your CD of Ubuntu, and put it in the machine, restart the machine. Go to install and it will ask if you want to install it alongside another OS. Select that option. Then it will let you adjust how much space you want to give each OS. Once your done that, it will partition the HDD for you and set up the bootloader for you. Is that so hard? NO.

@mattsamudio From the original story, it seemed that she couldn't go onto the internet. She tried to put the Verizon cd into her laptop and it wouldn't work. So it seems to be a driver issue? Maybe she was trying to set up a router? I'm not exactly sure about the details. But this is pretty much it. Very simple solutions.

This is sad, I'm 14 and I could have solved all those issues in less than 5 minutes. You really don't need a CD to connect to the internet. That's just crapware.
In this case, I believe people weren't helpful to her. These are issues a google search could tell you.

Open Office formats are extremely portable across all platforms and also distributions of linux, thanks to the .odt format. Whether you're a Mac or Windows user, elements of open source code have been used in your everyday products. From your modem, router, to your operating system.
OpenOffice and LibreOffice are already becoming viable alternatives to Microsoft Office, plus, it's free and open source.

@seanhamson not quite. I use office and open office (same as libre office?) and there are small differences that can be very annoying. Some of the functions are not the same... Sub totals for example, Excel vs Spreadsheet. Icons are different (I just hover over them to figure out find the one I need). I own 4 macs and work with clients and vendors that almost all use PC's. Open office works for most things, but once and a while it will bite ya.
