what i've read on the wiki, the durability of items is in this order (from least to greatest durability)

gold (least dureble)

wood

stone

iron

diamond (most dureble)

so, he is better off using wood (gold only mines FASTER, it does not LAST longer.)

@madgodpim that would be even more difficult to achieve than u know. a portal to the aether would also require a bucket of water (although a bucket of nether-ade MIGHT work) and the water bucket may evaporate. i personally would like him to find an end portal.
