You know how you know when you have a great teacher? I am a better trumpet player now simply after watching this. For free on You Tube. What a time to be alive.
Wow. I remember watching this on PBS back in the mid 90s. I was still a beginning trumpet player in middle school. I was the top trumpet player in middle school and high school. And I think a part of that was due to some of the principles I learned from watching this. This is what got me into jazz, blues, and classical music.
It's very interesting to watch this again after all these years. Thanks for posting.
That's just mean Wynton! Makin Yo-Yo play those effects on the cello and all was funny though. Were you just messin' with him? I'd like to think so :)
Randall Haywood is an increadible musician. I had the great opportunity of translating a few seminars for the juilliard jazz quartet. I have learned so much.
you trumpet players are ridiculous! who gives a flying fuck whos better or worse. thing is you can't compare people. people have different styles and different ideas, different everything! so stop looking like a bunch of fucking morons and learn to appreciate music for what is it!
OMG! I remember watching this in band class! After these videos that my band director showed us, I was inspired to play my trumpet even more than ever before. I just feel ashamed that in my sixth grade year before this I was too ignorant to really take care of my trumpet. Now it's very rusty looking. I have to remember to never abuse my instruments like that ever again. Out of all of three instruments, my clarinet is in the best shape. Thanks for posting, I'll always admire Marsalis.☻♫♫♫♫♫☻
I can sympathise completely. I left my trombone sitting in a closet for about five years, but recently took it up again to discover that the slide's now a bit fucked. There's something incredibly depressing about knowing that an instrument doesn't play as well as it used to because of something you've done to it.
What's the fight between Miles and Wynton? It's just bullshit. Miles brought jazz to a whole new level, when Wynton just took it, flavored it, and his own gumbo. What Wynton is teaching us how to play with cleanliness. How conversate with each other, and not blast. Making love to music.
I still don't understand why ppl are talking about MIles and Wynton on this vid. Wynton doesnt even talk about miles in thie segment or even try and define jazz. Leave the discussion to be about the video you are commenting on.

one4two5, how the HELL is Marsalis promoting his horn/mocking the kids with his expensive model? I didn't hear him once say "I'm going to show you how to growl with my awesome, $30 000 Monette horn."
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
no beef with monette, the horns cost $30,000. The horn Clifford or Miles played can be picked up on ebay for $800 or less. so why does Wynton play a monette? because he's an azzhole, a piss poor role model for the younger kids who couldn't ever afford a horn like that. his ideas lack originality, his playing has no soul, and his condescending attitude sucks. if you want to hear a cutting edge trumpet player with new fresh ideas go hear Til Bronner.
I think the point here is that Wynton, an accomplished professional musician, took the time to provide good honest mentoring to those kids. We see plenty of news coverage of professional athletes and criminal charges ranging from animal cruelty to ripping some girl's butt hole out in a motel room. Wyntons record is clean. So if the man chooses to reward himself with an extravagant horn, he has noone to apologize to.
I respect your opinion, and you had decent points, but you lost me when you said that "his playing has no soul." I can't get with you on that one. $30,000 horns can be a bit much, but to each... their own...
Oh jeeze, you have to relax. Okay, so his Trumpet is worth more than the kids, the Trumpet has a little to do with your tone. So what? I know plenty of people who bought Monnette mouthpieces over Bach which have over $100 differece. Even though in that case the difference is only so little, do you understand? Trumpet players buy their Trumpets and Mouthpieces because of how it helps them play the way they want and almost never about the price tag.
Wynton does a lot for promoting music for the younger generation. Your opinions about his play ability is another thing. Lots of people have issues about mainly his Jazz playing, you're the first I heard about him playing a certain horn. You trash talking him sounded more like a personal issue than anything else. You know he used to play a Bach Strad., right? Maynard and Patrick played/plays a Monnette, so are you going to trash talk them? (this is directed at one4two5)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I never cared for his playing, and have no idea what he played or when. He sounds like a machine, tons of technique, lots of sound effect mumbo jumbo but no soul. PLaying an unaffordable horn is simply not my idea of setting a good example for the kids who couldn't afford it and might draw the conclusion they suck unless they have a Monette. BTW, the last time I saw Maynard not long before he passed away he was NOT playing a Monette trumpet.
If you want to teach a kid something dont go preaching that someone as awesome as wynton has no soul. That would make me give up on trying to learn my soul of music.
So, to be good, he has to use a cheaper instrument? That makes no sense. Sure, you don't have to play a Monette to be good, but, if he can afford it, and he likes the horn, why not, he has every right too. And trust me, the kids probably aren't even paying attention to the horn he is playing. I would be paying more attention to his playing.

first of all he's not the best player in the world. not even close. Miles threw him off the stage in Vancouver, and thought he was a cheap imitator of the beebop players of the 60's. second, any starting trumpet player has doubts about how to improve, what they might be doing wrong, what mouthpiece to use, etc. The last thing they need is to think they should buy a pile of shit Monette that costs 10 times more than what a decent pro horn should cost. Go listen to Till Bronner for the best.
wow you disrespect the name of one of the best black musicans to ever live (still live)and you give me some german guy. you out to be a disgrace of your self . You DONT kno good music if you call Wynton garbage
you disgrace all trumpet players with your incoherent message, racism, and poor spelling. You forget Miles was black and wrote many of the jazz standards played today, and he couldn't stand Marsalis' robotic style either.
Because that makes TONS of sense. I have to play as well as someone in order to be able to critically appreciate them?
So you're either telling me that you think that his playing is perfect or that he's completely modest-- how can you possibly say either?
Granted, "perfect" playing is, if not impossible, at least a complete matter of opinion. But having met him several times, he never surprises me when nearly everything he says (even in a "masterclass") is either dismissive or condescending.
first of all - it was wynton who disliked miles music as he regarded it as not being 'true jazz', miles said that wynton was 'a nice young man, just confused'. as for Vancouver, wynton turned up unexpected at a miles davis set as someone had apparently 'told him to do so'- miles responded by throwing him off stage.
Wynton marsalis is one of the greatest modern trumpet players, and you can respect him even if you do not like his music.
thx for the level comments. You should read Miles autobiography to get your own facts straight. He states "Wynton plays those tired old licks we did in the 60's", I doubt there was much confusion, just lack of originality. Wynton is a rehash of a young Miles, but accused him of "selling out". Wynton owes his career to people like Miles, so why is he entitled to define true jazz? Jazz standards are FULL of Miles tunes, I don't see any Wynton in classic fake books, and dont ever expect to.
my facts are straight, you are merely pointing out different facts which are also true. i am not in any way stating that miles davis's music is bad, all i was doing was pointing out what wynton marsalis said about miles music and what happened in vancouver. as in your comment you made it sound like wynton was playing a set with miles, and miles threw him off because he disliked his music. all i was saying was what actually happened.
you are the dumbest idiot i know! do you realize how good wynton is? he practiced 6 hours a day when he was a kid! he is the best trumpet player in the world o my gosh your retarted!
yeah i totally agree with you. its like footballers dont need expensive supercars, but they may want them because they look nice and they like the way they feel. wynton doesnt really need a monette, but if he can afford one, why the hell not!?
you really do show your lack of knowledge. Check out Wynton when he plays Haydn's Concerto, or Carnival of Venice (check out his tone). You're right, these kids are not too well off, but it's a PBS publication and he's doing it to help inspire kids in music...you twit.
In these vids, he's not promoting Monette horns or mouthpieces-just his style Jazz and how jazz correlates in complexity and difference as any other style of music. Which case, you seem to be very dim.
Wynton's horn is his TOOL (=instrument). Any professional chooses the RIGHT TOOL for himself according to his requirements (including image). That is valid even for craftsmen like carpenters etc.
I think what he's trying is very noble. But can you really teach someone to be creative? All Yo Yo Mah ( sp?) did was try to imitate him. Creativity can't be taught, but thanks for trying Wynton.
Simply wonderful, I wish the whole series "on music" was available, I mean the one that includes Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Phil. Is is a three or four hour series. It was broadcast by Mezzo, the French classical music channel on European TV, about 5-6 years ago, to a live audience of school children.
I don't know why i'm typing but I wanted to say I thought that was so smooth. At first I thought that kid was great, then when he had to growl etc, it shows he's not "all that", just "pretty good".. Players and players man...
