After the massive success of this video (and some pressure from related groups) the petition got a vast number of signatories and the government rethought their stance, approving a set of financial breaks for British children's TV makers. The site is now closed - well done everyone and thank you!
@sygo7g It is terrible. There's also the whole "animation is for kids" stigmata that has always plagued British TV as well. Aside form Monkey Dust, there's hardly been anything int he past 10 years.
has any one noticed that a great comedy like the young ones, that was really popular only went on for 2 series, yet a shite american 'comedy' such as friends has been going on for years..? WTF?!
I'm from USA and have seen some British shows here and yes it looks like many American imports have shows over there..I do know Canada has some kind of requirement for TV to have Canadian content to a certain extent. Anyway I'd hope British TV could have some "home grown" programmes that are interesting, perhaps educational, well done, with Brit. content! (From an American whose ancestors came to US from UK in 1600s!)
When I was a kid living in the UK, I was lucky to have enjoyed all those programs that goldenheart5392 mentioned. After we had moved to Toronto, I watched them here until federal government funding got diverted towards more local children's programs. They were good, but still, not the same. Ah well, at least now I can stil see them whenever I want on YouTube!
I agree in principal, but I think it's far too late, British television is creatively bankrupt, in children's programming and all other areas. And where once was Wombles, Dangermouse, Brian Cant, Grange Hill and other greats, is now only Teletubbies and In the night garden and other tripe.
What the BBC needs to do is solicit donations from the public the way Public tv does in the States. It's a much more ethical system than the license fees you guys have.
I agree, we must have more ritish representation of british culture in kids television programmes. I grew up with programmes like the Wombles, Rainbow, Postman Pat etc... These days look at teenagers and how they speak, I can certainly see a heavy American influence in it. SAVE BRITISH KIDS TV!!!
the reason there is less money for british kids tv now is cos there so restricted on advertising cos theres less adverts they are allowed to show then theres less for programmes especiallyn on itv even the bbc fell the pinch
BBC doesn't rely on advertising, it's what the TV license pays for. BBC programs traditionally have made fun of their small budget as the TV license doesn't generate near the same revenue as advertising on other channels.
I think the real problem is simply lack of imagination, being lazy, mean and not taking risks; it's a lot cheaper and easier to import, especially when things are already established and successful abroad.
I saw "Make Way for Noddy" or whatever it's called (CGI update of Enid Blyton) on Spanish Digital TV and all the characters had American accents!!! Even PC Plod!!
It would be nice to see more British children's TV for children today. There's nothing racist, Xenophobic or Little Englander about that. Of course still import shows but allow for other new material from the UK to come through.
Ultimately it's the BBC and ITV...who will make these decisions.
if the government is that bothered about saving money on cheap us imports they should save the bother and play reruns of ace tv programmes like the clangers, ivor the engine, willow the wisp, bagpuss....and so fourth :D
(i make my step daughter watch anime so she doesn't get an american accent; her reading skills are great....subtitles ftw!)

very xenophobic, very little englander. what about the quality american\japanese kids tv - thundercats, anyone? i remember this same rubbish arguement years ago over the turtles 'cowabunga' and all - the only place this belongs is in the scaremongering daily mail
Pah! Phooey! Is it Xenophobic to want your own culture to be represented by your own culture? American influence has done untold damage to so many diverse world cultures, and it is fair to attempt to protect against this. Would you think it Xenophobic for Tibetans to attempt to protect their language and customs from the Chinese domination? Of course not. The Daily Mail is a despicable rag, and I have no time for it, but it is not wrong to protect your culture from American domination.
I totally agree. Grew up on great tv like the Wombles. The British accent on Kids TV is becoming extinct. Its all "Oh My Gosh!" and canned laughter-VILE!!! SAVE BRIT KIDS TV.

Completely true,
But the thing is that they also need to target kids older than 3 too, more the 7-10 year olds too, there is zero on TV for them.

I've pitched several show ideas, all people want to do is remakes too. So it's a case of banging your head against a brick wall sometimes
