I'm not sure if anyone ever invested in Napster but investing in a business who's model has been up to that point "Give everyone everything for free" or at least give them the tools to do that.
Monetizing such a business model would be a pretty significant challenge, it's like the challenge in monetizing Youtube, they've had to do it in such a slow, deliberate way because of user backlash it's cost Google more than they paid for it.
@Hakudohshi You don't have to monetize the stuff they're giving away. You monetize the software used. Morpheus, Grokster, and KaZaa did it in that order (obviously it didn't work for them, but the point stands that it's been done before).
