@Juliet0307 M'y entendre veux-tu dire?Tu me parlerais alors bien plus gentiment.
Inzwischen absolute Weltspitze!
What beautiful writing for the bass voice! I swear, Verdi was a complete genius, and Pape is a worthy exponent of his music. What a heartbreaking video! Thank you, gabba02, for posting this.
What I appreciate about his technique is that he doesn't "cover" it. His vowels are much "purer" than most... reminiscent of Pinza in that regard. He doesn't "try" to make a big sound or blow it out his nose to make it more impressive. It's a delight to hear. His voice will probably last longer as a result.
i was lucky enough to see sam ramey do this live, but i was only about 12, and didn't really fully appreciate it.
7yrs pass, and i'd hardly heard the aria again, and then there's rene at the volpe gala. my word. i think i cried for about 10 minutes afterward, his singing was so beautiful.
Pape introduced me to this aria - I first heard it sung by him during the '08 (or was it '07?) Met broadcast, and I was just overcome by the beauty of the music and his interpretation of it - as well as his voice, of course, but I had already heard that in the Pappano Tristan. I remember getting really excited and calling my mother over so she could listen to. He is definitely one of the best bassos we have today.
At the met a couple of years ago when he sang this, people didn't stop applauding for five minutes, it seemed. In the context of the opera, the cello solo, and Verdi's beautiful score, it was unforgettable.
I have seen him live in this role and yes, it is fantastic! He gave us the best singing we have ever heard, I am quite convinced that no singer has ever done this role better (yes, I have heard about Siepi, Christoff etc.). Unfortunately, his brilliant singing was something that the major part of the audience reacted somehow indifferent to. Possibly because he is not a tenor, but it makes me wonder who really show up on such occations.
He sings as he knows the meaning of every word. He has become the character he is singing, and the tone of feeling is expressed in every phrase as the song unfolds. I am currently learning this aria. It is a good lesson to watch him.
WOW!!! When they tell you to show emotion, that is EXACTLY what they mean. He told the whole story with his expression. AMAZING! I sang this in a recital and totally did not do it justice. Not after watching this. BRAVISSIMO!!
Rene Pape is amazing!!! This aria just had me sitting still for 5 minutes after it was over because I couldn't believe how wonderful it was. I've now listened to the entire opera of Don Carlo, but this aria still is the clincher, the highlight of the opera.
*note i'm only doing this to see if it really works kay*now if you stared reading this dont stop its really scarey!ok send this to five other videos in 143 minutes. When you are done press F6 and your crushes name will apear on the screen in big letters this is weird because it does work.If you break this chance you wont have a crush in the next five years
I was just watching the 2001 Tristan und Isolde telecast from the Met for the first time, and I kept thinking, "I bet he'd make a great Phillip in Don Carlo." And I was right! His tone reminds me a lot of Jose van Dam's...it's just gorgeous.
Awesome performer, if you know this aria well, you can hear that he's really in the moment and on the inside of King Phillip. He does so many things so incredibly well
An outstanding performance in its own right, and also one of the few good highlights from the Volpe gala. Too bad the orchestral introduction at the beginning is almost entirely lopped off - it sets the mood for what follows. Pape doesn't have the depth of voice for this role that Siepi or Christoff or Raimondi did (to say nothing of Plishka or Ghiaurov or Hines), but he certainly has a good voice for the part - and he does this aria justice!!! Thank you VERY much for posting this!

I agree for the most part with your assertions, (save for Raimondi - who I always fournd to have an uninspiring colorless sound) Pape is a wonderful singer, but the wound comes from the studio recording age. You forgot to mention Pinza as well! Hopefully an omission...
Crikey, what a voice! Shame he's not a better performer. Someone needs to teach him how to act, if that's possible, then he'd be incredible. Here he's literally incredible, as in I don't believe he is King Felipe for a second.
I believe this clip doesn't come from the staged opera, but rather from a gala concert. I saw him singing King Philip at the Met last year. He is one of the greatest actor/singer for sure.

A real basso cantante. Beautiful. He doesn't even sound German, there is nothing "Wagnerian" in his voice.
I like Wagnarian bassos, too, but better for the Grand Inquisitor.
