I served 20 years (1983 - 2003) in the army and I can tell you w/o a doubt that most gays (that were found out) were very disruptive to unit cohesion and their presence strongly detested by most other soldiers. A military unit requires you to shower with others - sleep and live in close quarters with others for long periods of time - and many straight men and women don't want to do that with a gay. Obama never served and most those who favor open gay policy in the military haven't either.

I won't argue that calling homosexuality an abnormality is rude, and that is not my intention, but in terms of technical reference, it is one. She also can't afford to go to college yet, and with the military she will actually be able to get an education like she wishes. Plus like all the other soldiers she doesn't want to keep silent about everything her life back home just because of someone's beliefs. So in essence it's not simple.

Nobody cared... we all had a job to do and those who were real soldiers were there to do that job. Only men who are insecure with their own sexuality would have a problem serving with a gay man. If you want a "marriage", then you go to your religious organization (ie: church) and have that religious ceremony performed. Anyone who would have a problem against this plan would be weeded out as a discriminating bigot because it wouldn't affect their "traditional" marriages one bit. Problem solved. I don't see why gays in the military should be a problem, except that I guess, in order to keep numbers up in the military, strict sexual harassment policies would have to be instated, and such policies would probably lead to lies of sexual harassment to get rid of the openly gay, but that's a bridge to cross later, and I don't imagine it being that much of a problem in the long run, as ignorant homophobes learn a little more and the dissonance quiets as people recognize one another as people...

I served 20 years (1983 - 2003) in the army and I can tell you w/o a doubt that most gays (that were found out) were very disruptive to unit cohesion and their presence strongly detested by most other soldiers. A military unit requires you to shower with others - sleep and live in close quarters with others for long periods of time - and many straight men and women don't want to do that with a gay. Obama never served and most those who favor open gay policy in the military haven't either.

There's no clear cut answer to this huskie767. It could be entirely genetic, entirely based on life experience, or both. I'd tend to think it's both.
When a person makes a pivotal life choice in their mind the brain chemistry changes. For example, when people with OCD get cured through therapy there is quite a drastic change in their neural patterns and flow of serotonin.

I know hetrosexual men that are effeminate, I know women that are masculine, and so forth and so on. The masculine/femine debate is largely with out basis. Its a sterotype, not a sceince Time and time again women and men have shown that they can rise to the task, Women serving in the armed forces, single Dads parenting, etc.. So why do same sex couples tend to be diometric? Simple, because thats what works most times. You see it in hetro couples as well, masculine woman, effeminate man.

It's laughable to think that policies like this exist. How the hell do they think gays "control themselves" in all the other sex segregated places like bathrooms, schools and bars (prisons not counting due the fact that alot of people in there are there for committing rape in the first place)? We can control ourselves and you know what, if any of us DON'T do that then charge them individually for what they've done. Don't hold it against an entire orientation!

Though I can't verify your claim i'd say probably because they are ostracized and discriminated against in society. In many cases, the rejection makes them feel like they have let down their family, friends and community. Like Emile Durkheim said, without support from their family or friends they lose their social ties and it puts them at an increased risk for suicide.

Just some facts:
There is no such thing as a "gay" animal, there are animals that have homosexual intercourse but no one has found proof of a solidly gay animal that refuses to mate. A closer classification would be bisexual.
We need to distinguish between the terms "natural" and "normal". Are people born gay naturally? Maybe, there is evidence supporting it and against it. From a biological standpoint homosexuality is abnormal, because if it were the norm the species would cease to exist.

Mmm that's where you're wrong I'm afraid. In San Diego zoo, there are 2 male penguins, both refuse to mate with any females. They even adopted an egg, and successfully hatched and raised it. They tried multiple times to get them to mate with females, all without any success. Yes, it's true, there are different factors in natural and normal, however if animals experience varieties of homosexuality, surely this could be considered natural?

Actually that's not true, there HAVE been examples of animales that refuse to mate and only engauge in homosexual sex. Also there have been studies that point to homosexuality being a product of overpopulation and thus NOT abnormal because cutting back actually helps the species exist. But the point I make is...so what?? Human sexuality is far beyond what the animal kingdom has. Simply put, horses don't wear pants. Your facts don't add up, sorry.

Overpopulation can easily be solved by migration, which i assume most straight people would choose over turning gay.

I partially agree; many things animals do would lead to utter chaos if embraced by human societies. However, if a few of the inverse things were true, i believe it would be a sign of evolution in the animals, showing an increase in intelligence and perhaps one day a semblance of sentience.
Yes, just because something exists in animals doesn't necessarily mean it does for humans, but usually the basic instinct is the same. Did you know humans and cows share 80% of their DNA?

Yup, i get what you're saying and i agree that homosexuality in animals cannot be used as an argument for or against gay rights.
I won't argue that calling homosexuality an abnormality is rude, and that is not my intention, but in terms of technical reference, it is one. I base this on the fact that it differs from the genetic norm of any mammalian species and the fact that it is detrimental to the propagation of a bloodline/species. I don't find anything "wrong" with it, but abnormal yes.

I don't see what the big deal is, anyway. They allowed women, who could and have been molested by men, in the military -- but why not men? It's not as if gay men are more or less sexually active than straight (or gay for that matter) women, despite what the media tells us.
