June 1987 was a bad month for the Dragon. First, he drops the IC title to Honky Tonk Man. Then he jobs to Kamala here. Guess this was Vince's message to the rest of the roster (including Hogan) not to ask for time off.
I love the way the crowd screamed in horror when Kamala hit the big belly splash. Back in the day, when the good guy came off the top rope it was a BIG DEAL, and when the big fat guy splashed you, it was DEATH.
I came across this looking for something else, but I remember this because I was there. It was at the Spectrum in Philly, they had cards there once a month back then and I went to every one of them.
@Donniesquid4 : I used to love the classic Spectrum matches that would be on Prism the next day. I have a video on my page of Hogan vs Bundy from '86 with a great interview with Killer Kal Rudman.
This was also around the time Kamala was fueding with Bundy.Bundy was pretty much on his way out around this time.Kamala also looks bigger here than other matches! So yes he did get a somewhat brief push here.
Seems like a big upset, but at the time Kamala was being primed for a series of title shots at Hogan. Still hard to believe that just a couple months before this, Steamboat was one of the 3 or 4 hottest wrestlers in the biz-
This match took place on June 27, 1987 shortly after Steamboat lost the IC title. The match was part of the old Colisuem Home Video series - "Best of the WWF Volume 12"
Kamala was great but Vince really did WWF an injustice by not letting Steamboat take some time off and come back as a star, rather than a cheap gimmick
This has got to be right after Ricky lost the belt to Honky Tonk early summer of 1987. Vince was pissed at Rick for wanting time off for the birth of his son, so Vince put Honky over. There is no way that kamala was ever going to get a push, so Ricky new Vince was going to repeatedly screw him thus leaving wwf. Nwa was next aas he bet Ric Flair for the title in 89.
Kamala did get a pretty big a push at this time. He had a good run with Hogan that was successful at many of the box offices. It just never played on a PPV or SNME so many people forget it, though it drew some good gates.
@mamacornettesmoney I remember that fued. I was just a kid but my Dad took me to a house show at the old richfield coliseum in cleveland and the main event was Hogan Vs Kamala. Kamala got a lot of heat and he really had a spooky kind of aura to him. When his music started and he came wandering out from behind the curtain it was pretty scary as a kid lol
This is from 1987 because Fuji didn't manage Kamala until mid 87. It's from the Philadelphis Spectrum and may be for the IC title in which Steamboat held the title from March 29-June2,2987.
@SabinBlitz81: Yes, and appears on the Coliseum Video VHS release Best of the WWF Vol. 12. The Honky Tonk Man d. Steamboat for the IC Title on the 6/13/87 (taped 6/2/87) episode of WWF Superstars.
No shame in jobbing to Kamala!

Dear Kamala, WTF. Why are you giving Ricky Steamboat a nipple/tity twister? Are you trying to give him cancer? And by the way.... LOSE SOME POUNDS!!!

@Kelski1998 No, it was a guy who only did commentary when the WWF was at the Philadelphia Spectrum. I think his name was Dick Graham.
Solid match, I always love Ricky Steamboat's matches.

Ah Thanks!!! Kind of like how Chet Coppock used to do the ring announcements when the WWF came through Chicago!

Kamala ruled. The gimmicks now are like bad comic books, this was pure athletic camp at its best.

If Kamala had a bigger win in his career, I sure can't think of what it might be.

wwe matches were so short. 20 minute entrances and 5 minutes of action.
Santana and valentine were the only ones putting on long matches for them.

Not for the IC title, because Kamala never held it--he won that match. Must've been in the months after Honky won it, or just before WM3.
