Whatever systems teams were checking that day......the differences in the rear wing from team to team quite marked..Honda's power always allowed McLaren to put on a barn door
So many different sounds, from V8/V10 and V12. Damn..i miss those times. Hopefully the F1 will once go back to these engines. The engines nowadays just sound so boring.
you're absolutly wright. I raced myself until '83 and i followed all the gp's. These days i don't even watch the tevee. It's boring. The ideal f1 car: carbonfiber chassis and protection for the driver like they do now. A 900bhp egine. Slick tyres and no electronics at all. F1 Teams will be affordable again and we will see some rich people start there own team. Result will be a field of 24 - 30 cars and some real spectacular races where sometimes a driver will lose his live in a crash.
@xansk8 For me the gold era of F1 is bettwen 1981-1993. We had the Brabham cars, one of the most beautyful cars of F1, and besides this drivers that you say, we had Lauda, Reutteman, Villeneuve, Jones, Rosberg, Schumacher (after 1992)... After 1993, Prost left F1, and Senna die, the only one that remains was Schumi...
Let's just say, if you have to ask, you'll never know.
To put it another way it "because it sounds F***ING AWESOME".
...or to put it another way because Nigel's ego requires 100% attention from everyone within a two mile radius at all times! lol But we love him for it.
Fantastic clip. Amazing. Kind of breaks my heart a little tho, what an era! Fantastic piece of Senna too. Is there any way to get back to 1990? ha I wish.
John Watson was not driving, he was F1 commentator on Eurosport around this time, with Allard Kalff. So he was there in his media role. He did not test the Jordan until January 1991.
The transmissions were not as refined through the 80's into the early 90's, maybe until 1991 or '92, as they are today as most of the F1 teams back then were using the 6-speed "H" pattern gearbox with the exception of Ferrari, who had the first paddle shift which they could use a 7-speed while the other teams still had the hand shifters.
@reading70 No it was the June tyre test. Usually run over 3 days about 2 weeks before the British GP.

I think that this time (1985-1991) is the F1 at his top level, no one era unite so great drivers and cars like that.
We have the beautiful Mclarens Benettons and the amazing sounds of Ferrari v12.
We have drivers like Mansell, Prost, Senna, Piquet, Berger, Nannini, Alesi, and many others.
This is the time when men were men!

Wow, this is some great footage! The fact that Senna and the Ferraris were there makes it even better. How did you manage to get on the pitwall?
