  • All Karate paths derive from one path - Karate - Do. It doesnt matter which style u practice, you are the one that makes it a "Do".

  • chidota

  • I have used kata's in real fights, not the whole thing of course

  • @MrGarnache - I tried to use a kata in a real fight but when I bowed the other guy did an upper cut. Okay only joking. Serious for a moment........I think kata is a good part of karate that gets us to practice movements that otherwise we may not even attempt. I share concerns that the 'performance' aspect of kata sometimes spoils the effectiveness (form over function) but what can you do? In some ways it reminds me of 'show dog' championships for humans. Give me a good mongrel anyday.

  • @BelloBudo007 ....... ....... Mr Tanaka used to say if you practice something wrong you become really good at doing it wrong, the point being doing it correctly is what makes it function and Kata is what teaches you how. Your idea that you can have function without form is incorrect if boxing or pole vaulting those with a more perfect form will win over those with poor form who try really hard and become prefect at doing it incorrectly.

  • @MrGarnache - Where did I ever say 'you can have function without form'? This premise actually goes against everything I believe in with my study of karate. And who is Mr Tanaka? Do you mean JKA Tanaka Masahiko Sensei or Mr. Tanaka that sells Koi at the Growers Market on Sundays?

  • @BelloBudo007 Mr Tanaka is a 2 time all Japan Katate Champion who moved to Alaska and Opened Tanaka's Martial arts Acedemy many years ago ..... I believe he is 9th degree and obviously quite well known in shito-ryu circles in both America, Japan and the world. I don't want to argue with you but it's a fact that people who are good at kata are also good at using it in a fight. I don't think the other Sensei Tanaka is related but I never asked him and he might be. It's a common name obviously

  • @MrGarnache - "I don't want to argue with you but it's a fact that people who are good at kata are also good at using it in a fight." I totally agree. There's no argument from me on the score as long as it's 'good kata'. We all have our own experiences and I can tell you from personally knowing 2 national kata champions and they were both useless at anything other than 'air karate' or what I call performance kata. The problem is it was not actually good kata.

  • @MrGarnache - The point that I was actually trying make is that there are people getting around in kata competitions who I know for a fact to be totally ineffective at applying karate technique. They may be kata champions but frankly they could not fight their way out of a wet paper bag because they have not approached their karate in a balanced way. IMHO karate needs to be both effective and beautiful. Maybe Mr. Tanaka agrees and maybe he doesn't.

  • @MrGarnache What is right and wrong.Take seienchin kata from Goju. Many styles use this kata and every style does it slightly different!,with a different application for the techniques and the explanations all work.

Maybe people should stop messing with the katas and perform them EXACTLY as they were intended by the inventor.Even then perfect kata does not equal effective application

  • @MrGarnache I guess your training was a complete failure then as you are supposed to avoid fights

  • @jadekayak01 ...... When insulting people and calling them failures becomes the first step in avoiding fights I am sure you will be able to show your superiority. Until that time comes your comment makes you look like a foolish person, attempting to START an argument\fight while telling someone else they are a failure for even being in one. ..... good luck in life with that approach

  • Kamikaze web? So "suicide-bomber" web, right?

  • @mrtedlos You show your ignorance-kamikaze does not mean "suicide bomber".

It can mean alot of things in Japanese depending on the kanji used but the most well known version is "divine wind"

  • Tem uns katas aii q é do Goju-Ryu...

  • shotokan ftw

  • WoW god film

  • For true desciples of Karate, Ikebana, Shodo etc, Kata are the living 'densho' of their art.

  • kata is the best way7 to get your basics and understanding of what u are doing i.e blocks, kicks and punches, shito ryu is my fav for of karate its very fluent and tactful

  • This is not all of them.

Matzukaze and Annan it's not there!

  • Me lo pido! xDD

  • plz reply !

i was in shotokan karate but i switched to this style yesterday ! how many katas is their in shito kyu ? and give me a website other than youtube to watch kata videos

  • kata was based off of an early senseis' real life expirience and was recorded down to be taught to the students. Also a person has to practice kata so much, in order to build the moves into their muscle memory.thinking is an enemy when fighting, so knowing kata very well will help you defend yourself without thinking too much about the fight, you just go with the flow of your opponent. many people dont know this and that is why many quit training because of their lack of understanding & patience.

  • @OswaldTheMartian Very well Put ....I agree , Muscle memory is there , ......but most important is Mushin ..."No Mind "...Just Flow..... C. Sanchez, Shinjitsu Jissen Karate Jutsu Federation..

  • i use to be taut karate shito ryu just like this but my parents dident have the time for me going to beginer classes T-T so i had to go in to the adult classes but the all the adults were higher than whight belts so i had to learn green belt stuff but i coodent keep up becase i only know well 1 kata 4kicks 4blocks and 3 punches and there doing all this weird shit so i guess it was a wast of time and money (T-T) DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!!!!!

  • @iskatenwk the answer is two sided: Yes and No. Karate has been watered down since Americans started learning it in the 40's. Most karate instructors now a days don't know how to explain how to use it in an actual fight. I was lucky and had a very traditional teacher but I was a black belt and in it for 10 years before he deemed it ok to show me how to actually use it in a confrontation. I love the style but mst people have no idea how good it is or when to actually use what maneuver.

  • @iskatenwk depends on what type of karate you're studying, and if they teach bunkai or not.

  • THE BEST

  • lol.. idk I don't do it anymore, it feels like forever since I used to do it.

  • @iskatenwk nah~karate is learn for self defense and a type of exercise to stronger up ur body not to fight :s

('KARATE is all about discipline !' that wat my teacher taught! :D

  • korek... kah jan,,

  • Aren't there, like 40 + kata in Shito Ryu???

    Isn't that alot?

  • i think is about the third style in number of katas

  • heian shodan ftw

  • Kara(empty)te(hand) karate-empty hand, literal translation. Karate was specificlly designed to work against many opponents at once. The thing is now in modern day(as well as all time) you have to know when to improvise and use what you learn from kata, bunkai, and fighting to defeat the threat. Like a punch to the chin won't to do any good. Improvise, punch to nose, or groin. That is what karate is, at least in my opinion.

  • @TheKarateWarrior

A gak to the chin is no good?

you clearly havent any street fight experiance.

  • a hard punch to the chin can nearly break your hand.

  • if u do karate and you know how to clench your fist properly your hand will not break

  • i agree with you on that a strike to underneath the chin will daze or knockout your opponent

  • I aggree that against multiple opponents karate may give a slightly better edge but really if you are fighting many people you should not even rely on style(Bite, Scratch, Go crazy, etc.) But the smartest thing to do in a situation like this is probably to haul ass

  • Brazilian Jiujitsu is good for one on one combat, dut try to fight off wo guys at once with BJ, you'll get your ass kicked.

With karate,if you're able to give one solid blow on a sensible zone, you may knock the guy out cold. Thats what I think

  • I aggree that against multiple opponents karate may give a slightly better edge but really if you are fighting many people you should not even rely on style(Bite, Scratch, Go crazy, etc.) But the smartest thing to do in a situation like this is probably to haul ass

  • very true but you have too know exactly where to strike

  • Brazillian jujitsu is much better

  • the reason people say one style is better because it fits THEM and THERE body better. Its a individual thing, whatever helps you defend yourself is the best for you. i love goju ryu, but someone else might find shorin ryu better because it fits his personality and body type. i love all karate and gung fu but for my personality and body type goju is my style.

    ous! and much repect!

  • I take motobuha shitoryu, god, its one of the best out their. And I thought the heians were called pinans in shito ryu, because only shotokon calls them heions. :s

  • @ZornAndWingShow Yeah they are called Pinans in our style, Pinan Shodan being the first then Pinan Nidan and so on.

  • No 1 style is the absolute style just specified aspect of the whole as well is individuals interpretations- nothing is rite or rong as long as it works 4 the situation at hand- having trained in multibl ryu styles jujustu jiu jutsu aikido n kenpo i luv them all 4 their own reasons- karate begins n ends w respect- respect each other n each others arts- b humble- not all who train in the martial arts r martial artist- 2 each their own purpose

  • Those who compare one style to another from an analytical perspective may be on to something. Those who say one style is better than another should be more specific, like this styles kokusu dachi vs that styles neko ashi dachi, pros and cons. The maturity that people answer questions and comments belie a lack of true training too.

  • hey gohmodley do you want to loose your tooth in a split seconds? take some sparring,,and you'll know how powerful shito-ryu is!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think most of you are missing the concept here. Style is a biproduct of preference - it's simply what the practicioner prefers. When it comes to battle, the better martial artist will stand at the end. Period. Arguing ryu vs. ryu is like arguing about which color is the 'best.'

  • well said lol.took the words rite out of my mouth.when you learn-you learn your sensai's ideals but everyone knows a martial artist training is never over and its our obligation to find our own paths after we leave our respective dojos.[but thats just how i feel.]

  • Because of your overall lack of grace for one. Second your need to overcompensate on something you have little to no understanding and last we are not talking about the 2-hour class you took at the YMCA.

If you actually studied for any time you would know that every style has its good points and its vulnerabilities, further many styles have foundations within the same main core but you should know this already right Mr. pwned face Salad?

  • I would like you to take a few ShitoRyu classes then open your mouth...

  • Uh, what makes you think I haven't. Never make assumptioins. Get your facts then open your mouth. OWNED!

  • i'm training aikido for 2 years now ! and as karate is concerned SHITO RYU is the best karate do ! the fact are clear it has the biggest variety of katas - 43

  • ahahahah, shitoryu???!!!!Go try to be black belt in kung fu,then u can talk about karate!

  • Really which version of kungfu exactly? because many of the kungfu styles use Shotokan basic's.

But you being an expert and all should have known that --- right?

  • i am geting my green belt

  • Im going for my 1st dan black belt in march! Been doing it for 3 years now. Good luck to me!

  • good luck for you! =)

    portugal

  • Thank you!

  • a ree ga to go za i mass i like the video so much this is my style

  • "kamikazeweb"? Not very tasteful :P

  • Im a 2nd kyu ( brown advance belt )

  • Ah me too..^^ This can be helpful then...

  • i understand all of the above comments but as a 2nd dan in shitio ryu, i believe these dvds are truly benefical, i have been away frm my club for a year and a half with no training and am beginning to find myself forgetting certain parts of particular katas, these dvds are bringing those lost parts back to me!

  • cool! i take this style of karate. im a purple belt

  • ang gwapo ko!!!

  • This is a very usefull DVD indeed.

  • you are missing a shito ryu kata

  • imagine you have spent your life perfecting your grappling, with all the breaks, dislocations, joint locks, and so on, with no, printing, no video, no way of recording for your family and students your knowledge..

this has happened, thru many, masters, of many, styles.. resulting in todays kata..

traditional karate such as okinawa gojuryu includes grappling, weapons, real sparring, etc, and, kata.. including 'hyaku' or secret techniques, which you dont see, in the kata..

  • muybueno , i have the dvd Kata collections from Hidetoshi Nakahashi. althught his bunkai to the katas arent so good...

  • why bother learning to walk and learning balance when you can run and jump? you sound foolish. you can go ahead and stay in your MMA gym, but don't knock kata if you don't understand it.

  • of course they don't.

in shito ryu, you need a preparation before learning the traditional karate, that who can kill in secs.

If you teach traditional karate to a person whitout being shure it is prepared to have deadly techniques in its hands, is like giving a knife to a child.

That's why you do katas, to prepare your body and most of all, your mind, to have patience and to learn how not to go around hiting peolple as if you where bruce lee.

  • Also, the lethal techniques are useless if you don't have the fundamentals to make them work. Just look at all the "traditionalists" who get their butts kicked by beginner MMA guys. They all trusted their "deadly" techniques to help them out, but they had no speed, no power, no timing, no experience in resisting opponents, etc. Karate is among the greatest martial arts if you train in it correctly, in my opinion.

  • You're right, shadowdusk. My friends watch me do my katas occasionally when they visit my dojo, and they always make fun of me, saying things like "Forms are useless." Ofcourse you won't actually use kata in a fight, but that's not what kata is meant for. You can't learn to fight unless you have the basics down.

  • @MonsterMashKiller That's pretty ignorant but typical. Forms are not useless, they are the base of our karate. Forms will primarily be in your advantage when you perform self defense, they help with leverage among many other ways of defending yourself.

  • @spearxyou i totally agree. people simply don't understand the importance of the little things in martial-arts. my friend joined football a year ago, and is really good. he though he was "badass" enough to then join an MMA studio in our city. he left a few weeks later with 3 broken ribs, a broken nose, and a fractured wrist. perhaps this will teach him that basic martial-arts isn't as pointless as it seems.

  • @MonsterMashKiller 2 words for your friends: Muscle Memory

  • @DelinquentSaints

    better words-

"if the katas were so useless, then why were the old masters so deadly?"

  • @MonsterMashKiller

Sorry to say, you may need some new friends. Preferable some who know how to support you, and educate themselves on the subject of which they intend to speak.

No doubt they refer to the fact that in kata there is no opponent, but the timing necessary to generate power is learned.

Ask them if you may hit them with the same power you project in kata, or would they like you to pull your punches so as not to injure them. For fun, practice a little on the makiwara first.

  • @MonsterMashKiller if you think that kata's are no use in a fight, you're not learning the right kata.

  • most kata were meant as a way to teach students moves so that they could then go and use them in real life situations. they werent meant for shows like we use them today, but still are a great way to TEACH the moves which you cna use when sparring and "in street defense"

  • we learn kata's because all our moves, our kicks, blocks, techniques and strategies are derived from kata's... the better you understand your kata, the better you'll understand the mechanism and physics behind your attacks and moves

  • please tell me where to download those DVD!

  • here is where i buy all my stuff :-D (SPain) :-D

    TIno Trivino

  • I thought shito ryu called the keian katas pinan, like in okinawan.

  • What a smart boy... !

  • Yeah...with shodan and nidan reversed...Pinan shodan begins with combonation age uke and uchi ude uke... I mean they split the ticket...Heian kata but, then Naifanshi instead of Tekki. Its a crazy world man!

Watching this stuff makes me want to start training again though!
