Wikipedia doesn't say that there's a relationship between them and piranhas, except that most of the diet of payaras consists of piranhas. Wikipedia says that other names for this fish are Dog Tooth Characin, Vampire Fish, Cachorra in Venezuela, and Chambira in Peru.

And the page also says that the fangs can grow to 4 to 6in. long, so much longer than seen in the video. I guess those fish would be larger or much larger.

@ChrisH11515 yeah they usually run $30 and they eat ANYTHING! and get 5 lbs or bigger. mine died all of a sudden never figured out what happened. my guess they are very sensitive to the water quality and/or ammonia. they dont really swim straight, they swim inverted at an angle with their tail higher up than their head because of the way their jaw opens. sorta like this slant---> \ they kinda have the appearance of a swimming pipe wrench. i also had an alligator gar.
