whenever im home alone i crank my blues jr, volume on 12 master on 12 fat switch on and it sounds amazing, so glad i went with a 15 watt amp i wouldnt have been able to do that with a deluxe =)
I think the HRDx is the best amp for the money myself, its a little more than the blues jn, but its got a much better clean sound, more jangle and punchy, I like the BJ thou and for the money their is no other amp can keep up with it clean, U get a vox for that price and put them side by side clean channel, and vox are meant to be more jangle, I don't think they are, fender have the best clean sound full stop
@MrNebelful If an amp has two knobs, and one is the master volume, it will usually be called "Master" or "Master Volume". To get distortion at low levels, you need to crank the preamp Volume and turn down the Master volume.
@gr8bluesgtr I have a Blues Junior & I crank the master to get those tubes hot & use the volume to adjust how loud the overall sound is, whether I'm @ practice or a gig. You get a better clean tone that way & it breaks up nice.
A couple of questions : In your review, you said it gives 80% of what you need. Would getting the other 20% entail getting a hold of a bigger, heavier, louder, more expensive amp?
It's now over a year ago that you did this review, do you still use it or have you found something else you're going with instead?
Lastly, would you still recommend it for home and small gig use?
First I would like to say thank you for your lesson! they're really great!
Secondly, I wanted to know how quite you mean when you say whisper quiet. What I want to know is if I could get nice saturated (I realize it would be preamp tube saturation) at volumes suitable for an apartment.
@davecolat When I say whisper quiet, I'm referring to a volume level that would be suitable if someone were asleep in the next room in your apartment and you wouldn't wake them up.
I love these amps, i tried the std black tolex first and was gona buy it then i tried the tweed with the jensen which changed my mind untill i finally bought the ltd edition brown tolex with the celestion vintae 30 speaker and i love it it sounds more present than the jensen but i suppose its all matter of taste! Great vid man im gna upload some of my bjr soon
I recently ordered a Tweed Fender Blues Junior, but it doesn't have a Jensen speaker, it came with a replacement fender. Is this a warning sign?. Also, I was wondering if the MIA or the MIM's are better.
ive been dying to get this for a while, but am 200$ short (im a kid, what do ya expect). anyway, u said in previous vids about tube amps that u can overdrive it by turning down the master volume and turning up the input volume. by Input volume do u mean the knob closest to the reverb that just says volume?
@aerozeppelin75 there are 2 volumes...1 controls the preamp, you can crank it to load the preamp tubes, the "master" controls the actual volume. P.S. look at ebay or websites that have them used in great condition will save you around a hundred bucks
All B.Juniors sound pretty darn good. No matter which speaker is in it. Eminence, Celestion or Jensen. I found that I could tweek each one up so they could sound very similar. My lacqured tweed version came with the Fender Eminance and it did indeed sound different than the black tolex. Cheers, Bob
i don't know if it said this already but thanks for doing this. I wondered about this amp and all the questions you addressed. As a novice living in an apartment i can't turn my amp up. I really didn't know if that was normal or what and things like the master volume and playing on low and size and portability are all things i've had questions about. It's amazing how much i get from your videos.
if you want to windex and wipe the windows of the blues junior, get the mods done. The man who invented the mods, Bill Machrone, lives in NJ, about 30 minutes from NYC. I got mine modded by him and it was like getting a shroud lifted. The sound blew me away and it still does.
Mine cooked the power tubes at it's second gig because it was biased too hot in it's stock condition. I purchased the BillM mods from Bill's website which included an adjustable bias mod and several tone stack mods. I also replaced the stock Fender speaker with a Weber 12F150. These changes drastically improved the amp and I would never purchase one of these again without intending to do these mods. Great demo!
SRV got allot of his style from Buddy Guy too, have a listen to Buddy Guy and you will see that SRVs scale playing is very simular, only the tone is much different.
i meant to give you a thumbs up and hit the wrong button. So sorry. but yeah there is a ton of similarity in the way they play and i think it's clear to see the inspiration.
hey man I've got a tolex Jr with a stock speaker and I may eventually replace it for better tone @ rehersals, BUT - you really need to try running it with a bigger cabinet, I was just playing it today through my Marshall cab (2xG12H30) with a TS808 after putting on a new set of Boomers and it sounded spectacular! Depth is definitely there! ;) I may do a sound sample of the difference if any1's interested
I agree 100% regarding the need for the master volume. My travel/jam amp is a Peavey Classic 30. Although not light, it is A LOT lighter than my 50. The problem with the 30 is no master volume, and it is a very loud amp. So, i simply built a box with a 500k pot and placed it into the effects loop. It work great! I can eq the amp at high/driven volumes and then roll the fab'd volume in the loop back. I was a little leary because I thought I would lose tone...I did not. Easy fix.
Personally, I go for the louder, deeper sounding amps. If I need to play later (i.e. quieter) in the evening, I just use the Dr. Z. Air Brake. It sounds clean and doesn't break up at low volumes like the crappy Hot Plate does.
I have a fender 410 blues deville, man its one heck of a great sounding amp.. but it's too powerful. the vol goes up to 12 and 2 is super loud when I am practicing. I need the volume to get that great sound. It's prefect when jammin with friends though. I'm planning on getting another fender that's smaller with a 6l6 or something..
really helpful thank you so much...i am considering buying this amp...for the exact reasons...you touched on.
speaking of gigs....in my opinion a lot of people are interested in playing live and in front of people....(myself included)
with that in mind would you mind posting a video "lesson" on how to get them...what you get out of them.....just a few..tips and ideas...would be really nice and helpful...
For a bit more than the price of the NOS BJ, I could get the Carvin V3M. Killer little amp with every feature on Earth.

This amplifiers distortion is quite limited. What would you do if you needed a significantly higher amount of distortion?
