I live in the Pittsburgh, Pa area and the Mon River Valley looks just like this... (it goes on for more than thirty miles.) town after town is a ghost town. Braddock is in the heart of it and has been on the news alot lately. The Mon Valley is where the steel mills were located to make the steel for the autos in Detroits factories. Now all that is left are drug dealers and some retired people. So sad.

I actually grew up in Brightmoor, on Patton street. Pretty intense shit, drive by shootings galore, burning houses a few times a week. The house I grew up in was burnt down a year or so ago, but the crackhouse around the corner is still holding up. Funny how life works out.

Thank you very much for sharing this! My family grew up in Brightmoor (Chapel, Westbrook, Dolphin, Lamphere, and Grove streets). Brightmoor was bad when we lived there and we were able to get out. It is sad to see how it is today.

But in between every two or of those burned down houses, you might find good famlies! One might also find innocent children and young teens turning to gangs other negative means cause there aren't any positive outlets! There actually many folks willing to learn and to impove themselves in this community. Students who are just as interested in edu as the children in livonia, redford, or other parts on detroit. There aren't enough oppunities for them to improve themsleves. atleast not nearby!

Hubby and I lived on West Parkway in Brightmoor from '85-'91. He grew up on Beaverland and went to St. Christines. Our first two children joined us while we lived there. There was a great sense of community on our street but when it started to go bad it went fast and most of us moved out around '91. I still have great memories of that time. It's sad to see it looking like a war zone.

I am a 31 y/o white guy. I used to live on the corner of Beaverland and Midland. 15521 Beaverland to be exact. I remember riding the neighbors Go-Cart up and down the road in the mid-late 80's. My parents frequented the Flame Bar @ Grayfield and Fenkell. I went to Hubert, had Mrs. Coleman in first and second grade. It was a fun place to live when I was a kid. I drove thru there in 2002 and was scared for my life, and vowed I would never go back. I think they should just finish burning it down.

I grew up in Brightmoor in the 70s and 80s. It was considered a white trash area when I was growing up there and it's even worse now. That being said..it is still the neighborhood I spent my childhood in. Therefore; it will always be dear to my heart. I loved brightmoor because of the friends I had there. I loved taking nature walks on the paths by the rouge river. Don't feel sorry for me for growing up there. I believe the experience has made me who I am today.
There was a time when it wasn't a dump. It was a nice place with green grass and flowers. I grew up there. It does seem impossible to fix the neighborhood. Calling each other names and insulting one another won't fix anything.

I used to pick up my newspapers from Romano's Party Store at Bentler and the Jeffries. We'd also pick up at Guillo's 1 block to the east (Blackstone?). Anyways, Joe and Mary Romano used to save all the wheat-head pennies and buffalo nickles and sell them to me at face value.
I lived in Brightmoor from 1965 - 1980 at 12934 Bentler. I delivered the Free Press and detroit News and remember when the Jeffries Freeway was being built. As a paper boy for 5+ years I got to know the neighbors well. It was a tough, hillbilly-ridden neighborhood with pregnant teens and drug users scattered throughout. My dad paid $16K for our house in 1965, and sold it in 1985 for $6K!!! The house was 4 bedrooms, 3 bath with basement and detached 2-car garage!!!

Also, this hood should have been torn down after WWI, WW2 and the Korean War. BMoor was a military town and the brick houses were for higher rank personell, and they frame houses were for families temporary living. However, the poor whites from the mountains & hills moved in and the community remained. The goal was like a housing project that remained, it should have been destroyed and rebuilt after the Korean War. Check out the statue on Lahser and Outer Drive.

My dad was a business leader in Brightmoor and helped to build it into a nice working class neighborhood. I hate what has happened to his business and my old neighborhood more than almost anyone else has a right to. Brightmoor was nowhere near as bad as it is now, but compared to other parts of the city it was pretty run down even when I lived there in the 50's & 60's. And it was almost exclusively white. The problem is not with race, but with poverty and poor education.

I live in the Pittsburgh, Pa area and the Mon River Valley looks just like this... (it goes on for more than thirty miles.) town after town is a ghost town. Braddock is in the heart of it and has been on the news alot lately. The Mon Valley is where the steel mills were located to make the steel for the autos in Detroits factories. Now all that is left are drug dealers and some retired people. So sad.

I actually grew up in Brightmoor, on Patton street. Pretty intense shit, drive by shootings galore, burning houses a few times a week. The house I grew up in was burnt down a year or so ago, but the crackhouse around the corner is still holding up. Funny how life works out.

Thank you very much for sharing this! My family grew up in Brightmoor (Chapel, Westbrook, Dolphin, Lamphere, and Grove streets). Brightmoor was bad when we lived there and we were able to get out. It is sad to see how it is today.

Hubby and I lived on West Parkway in Brightmoor from '85-'91. He grew up on Beaverland and went to St. Christines. Our first two children joined us while we lived there. There was a great sense of community on our street but when it started to go bad it went fast and most of us moved out around '91. I still have great memories of that time. It's sad to see it looking like a war zone.

I am a 31 y/o white guy. I used to live on the corner of Beaverland and Midland. 15521 Beaverland to be exact. I remember riding the neighbors Go-Cart up and down the road in the mid-late 80's. My parents frequented the Flame Bar @ Grayfield and Fenkell. I went to Hubert, had Mrs. Coleman in first and second grade. It was a fun place to live when I was a kid. I drove thru there in 2002 and was scared for my life, and vowed I would never go back. I think they should just finish burning it down.

I grew up in Brightmoor in the 70s and 80s. It was considered a white trash area when I was growing up there and it's even worse now. That being said..it is still the neighborhood I spent my childhood in. Therefore; it will always be dear to my heart. I loved brightmoor because of the friends I had there. I loved taking nature walks on the paths by the rouge river. Don't feel sorry for me for growing up there. I believe the experience has made me who I am today.

I used to pick up my newspapers from Romano's Party Store at Bentler and the Jeffries. We'd also pick up at Guillo's 1 block to the east (Blackstone?). Anyways, Joe and Mary Romano used to save all the wheat-head pennies and buffalo nickles and sell them to me at face value.

I lived in Brightmoor from 1965 - 1980 at 12934 Bentler. I delivered the Free Press and detroit News and remember when the Jeffries Freeway was being built. As a paper boy for 5+ years I got to know the neighbors well. It was a tough, hillbilly-ridden neighborhood with pregnant teens and drug users scattered throughout. My dad paid $16K for our house in 1965, and sold it in 1985 for $6K!!! The house was 4 bedrooms, 3 bath with basement and detached 2-car garage!!!

Also, this hood should have been torn down after WWI, WW2 and the Korean War. BMoor was a military town and the brick houses were for higher rank personell, and they frame houses were for families temporary living. However, the poor whites from the mountains & hills moved in and the community remained. The goal was like a housing project that remained, it should have been destroyed and rebuilt after the Korean War. Check out the statue on Lahser and Outer Drive.

I graduated from Cerveny bcaz Murphy was a danger to minority kids because of the Nazi activity. The park of Burgess/Lahser was no playground bcaz of the hanging of black dolls,etc. Mason the radio personality had made a committment in the early 90s to have family picnic day at E. Howell park because blacks were beaten, banned from there.

Brightmoor was first populated by poor whites from Appalachia. The area is still home to a remnant population of extremely few poor whites. Guys that would commit a triple homicide and then go home and rebulid a transmission in their driveway. Crack hit in the 80's and Brightmoor turned into a war zone. Then the drug addicts robbed anything they could get their hands on, until all that was left to steal was copper plumbing and siding from vacant homes. Now there is nothing left.

First of all I grew up on Bentler behind Redford in 1977. We were a handful of blacks that lived in the neighborhood. 48219 consisted of working class educators/plant worker with a majority of two parent families. Across Puritan it was mainly whites/yep Hillbillies who had pet racoons on tied up on chains like they were dogs. The whites were mainly KKK/they would rally down Fenkell bt. Lahser to Telegraph (Howell Park). They did not want blacks in BMoor. It was trashy 30 yrs ago.

How horrible....I was born and raised in Brightmoor (fenekll & telegraph). Sad to see what a nice neighborhood can turn into after so many years. Hate to say it, but I'm glad I got out. Hickville PA looks a lot better than that.
