National was founded by the Dopyera brothers. In 1928 John Dopyera left the company and formed the Dobro company (Over a small dispute about single-cone resonators being more accessible for less monetarily endowed musicians). Dobro had several subsidiaries; Regal, Old Kraftsman and Ward, to name a few

The term 'Dobro' is just an abbreviation of the creator's name, used for the company. The instrument itself is called a resonator guitar.

Not to sound like a know-it-all, but the instrument in question is actually called a Resonator Guitar. It's also called a "Dobro", but Dobro is actually just a very popular brand of Resonator Guitar. Kinda like a Band-aid is actually an adhesive bandage, but everybody calls them Band-aids. People typically just call it a Dobro. And it can be played like a typical guitar. But most people lay it horizontally and play it like a steel guitar with a slide.
