I got my first U2 album a couple of months before this but this was the night I really became a fan. Watching this on TV, I was transfixed and completely blown away. There was no going back. By the end of 2002, I owned every album.
I have to say though, what you hear and experience of the band members is all U2. But this video is ALL Hamish Hamilton and his crew. Which U2 hired to then film the 2001 Boston concert and then again to film another event.
It was actually U2(Bono) that when they saw this video for themselves, called up Hamish and basically said, you're hired!
@EWLGtoday Yeah I loved what Hamish and team did with the Boston / Chicago shows and they did a great job here. But there was something extra special about what Bono did. I think its because I'd grown up in the 90s with horrible dance acts and bands that played like they might as well be in an empty room. And then I see this guy creating a bit of drama and actually playing to the crowd. I think that's what did it.
@KangoTV You're so on point! That's a great part of it...Bono playing the crowd! the camera! even his interaction with the security guard...that it was all captured for us to enjoy! So may layers to a U2 show! So many!
In the 80's U2 did a show where the crowd started to join them on stage. For security purposes Bono in fact had to tell everybody to leave the stage. After the show he said he felt so bad that he had to do that. That lead to changes in the stage setups ever since.
Note the director Hamish Hamilton on the end credits, he went on to direct two U2 DVD's Live in Boston 2001 and the Vertigo tour in Chicago 2004. Ok ok ok, so I'm a U2 Junkie, so what :-p
That asshole was Bono's bodyguard for the evening. Not sure who he is, but I always see him at film premiere's and showbiz events guarding the celebs.
he's completely mad haha love him ! ♥

@johnnybucks72 When I think of Hamish, I mostly think of the awful Boston and Chicago videos -- especially the Chicago video. I do like Slane.
