Are drummers the next salvation of the free world? Speek it...I mean we can all follow the leader or drum our way "out of my constriction....Feet don't fail me now!" Ha. ha.
Yikes!! Chris Dave is mad scary!! The man's chops are so wicked, yet he doesn't abuse it or overplay like some working drummers do, smooth, yet blistering, cool, yet a freakin' beast!! Crazy technique, but most of all he can groove his ass off!!
I just come back from a live of robert glasper experiment in paris. It was good as fuck, rob g. and Chris dada just kill this. and Thanks for the J Dilla Tribute at the end. RIP J DILLA.
Chris Dave is one of those drummers where even if his playing isn't your cup of tea, you can't argue with the entire generation of musicians he has influenced. Kinda like a Coltrane of drumming.
1) thanks for getting Mark's name out there. he is tight as all hell!!! people, check him out 2) i have learned to just enjoy music and those that play with passion and heart. there is no competition when it comes to this stuff. just enjoy it and keep it moving.
If someone is polished and technical why does that automatically equal no soul, people who say this should open they're soul up when listening to drummers. This is raw and it isn't doin' shit for me! Raw or polished, both can or can't have soul!
@Monsterdrumma yo son, i never said spank didn't have soul. A better word for spank would be that he's very tasteful. Now, I'm not sayin that Chris can't be tasteful. He plays for Maxwell for fuck sake! So maybe you simply favor more for one than the other. That's fine. I appreciate all worlds of music.
actually chris is better than spank...who u think spank goes to 2 workout on set... chris is spanks mentor...has been for years..o yea chris also can play any timing spanking has gotten quite there yet....
@pastense well i have to disagree with u on ur view of dave hes a well polished drummer who has technique and is conservative..its just tht hes sooo polished tht hes been able to create a new sound...u gotta think he was stokleys drummer...
@Mccritical80, you're right, but that just comes to show how way ahead his artistic level is. To come from an r&b band under Stokley's direction, he started out to be polished/conservative. But since then, he's reinvented himself over and over and over into the monster that he is today. And to be in Maxwell's band under Glasper's direction, of course he's gonna be on the polished side of things...I never said he wasn't.
@Drummy17 Chris inspired a generation of drummers, when he came out on Kim burrells first album in the 90s. he was still in high school, They are both amazing drummers, but chris truly is the guy right now
Honestly i think dat a lot of ppl 4get dat guys like spanky are profeesional drummers...of course they hav the ability 2 play different styles of music dats wat they get paid 4...some may do certain thins a lil better but dat jus varies aupon the style of the drummer...if he cudnt he wudnt b as popular a drummer as he is now
I'm gonna check Justin Brown. Dave is drumming at a higher level IMO b/c of his diversity - hip hop, gospel (Kim Burell), jazz, Neo Soul, R&B. He says Tony Williams is an influence, and I hear that. I don't know if Spanky does anything other than gospel - not a bad thing, but it limits possibilities. I enjoy both. I'm gonna check J.Brown.
and common n jayz and kanye west (glow in the dark) backstreet boys n.e.r.d molly cirus taylor swift, nas, destinys child etc. for ever n ever...but spank only does gospel??..do ya homework...and put spank n chris in a shed..spank will do ANYTHING chris can...just say u heard more of Chris Dave than uve heard Spank and you dont know what you're talking about lol
the only thing im not too sure about is spanky > chris dave.. im mean.. chris dave originated this "bend tempo" concept.. and spanky learned from him and changed t into his own thing.. so i guess we cant really compare
are you kiddin me?! Chris can play circle around Spanky. dont get me wrong, Spanky is good but he cant touch Chris Dave, hell no. spanky is repetitive. Chris Dave is always doin somethin new. thats why spanky got his ass kicked by Eddie Heyward!
I agree with Chris being better than Spank. But Spank is wayyy better than Eddie. U wanna talk about repetitive... listen to eddie when he was a kid. he sounds the same. And besides... look at eddie's gigs and spanks' gigs..... Church vs Diddy?
i was bout to say the same damn thingkmasta97 said. dont forget rashid williams ate him up to. spank had one good lick against him and it was the same damn lick he used in that trio vid wit dw and ypj live at studio 911. i mean chris dave constantly changin up his style cuz bootleg copycat drummers like spanky always taking what dont belong to them
all im saying is that spanky took a whole lot from chris dave, i mean yeah its pretty damn obvious every drummer or musician takes from another, but it comes down to the way they use what they've taken. u can be like dave and make your on shyt wit it or be like many others and play just like the one who you took from... its all about your approach to the instrument
and spanky's approach is very similar to chris daves ... and its pretty damn obvious who is more original then who..... and plus its even been said that spanky himself admitted to geting things from dave's style... call me ignorant but facts is indeed facts buddy. it's pretty funny how ignorant dudes is so quick to call others ignorant LOL im out... im done wasting my battery power LOL
I guarantee Spanky can play jazz and latin and he plays with K'naan so he can obviously do hip hop. Just because he does a lot of gospel doesn't mean he doesnt have the ability to do anything else lol
ooh I'm not saying that Spanky can't do anything else b/c he does alot of gospel. I'm just saying that Dave is deeper. You should check out takminister's videos of Dave in London with the Chris Dave Trio. Dave is on another level. Gospel stifles people, locks them into that catagory, so that's why I sounded like I was hating... that's my own personal issue.
@TIMMYDEEZ same for Jamire Williams, who also played for Kenny Garret and Glasper, after Dave. Dave inspired all these dudes, hence the name "Daddy". Dennis Chambers also fathered all these cats!
I saw your videos, you're chops are tired and old son! That's why Chris Dave is getting paid top dollar for what he does and you're still making knock off gospel chops flicks!
You're better than him? Be serious you don't even believe that lol...... You're better but no knows who you are. These videos are just a mild representation of what Chris can do, I promise you he has way more Heat than what's shown in these vids..........
mate i think to say anyone is better than chris dave is impossible, this guy is on some other stuff, in my opinion he is doing something new with the instrument!! you can play, i checked your vid, but man chris dave is a genius...
RZA and JDILLA are both amazing composers and the studio is their instrument. how hiphop composers put beats together has definitely influenced the way instrumentalists like dave, questlove, glasper, moran, vijay iyer play--rhythmically, spacially, texturally. hiphop is on some miles davis/blues/JB 'ish--as much about what's left out as put in, about editing, listening, soul, tone, attack, swing, drama, erotica. be like obama dude--open to ideas that challenge yr comfort zone. get krunk.
wu i love bout chris dave and robert glaasper is that on just bout every vid u see wit them doin they thing u get smiles and jokes and laughter from them... they having fun! along wit being the best at wut they do today
i hear baby dodds, i hear max roach, elvin jones and billy cobham, dejohnette i hear the RZA and J Dilla. All genius level drum conceptualists and rhythmic deconstructionists who knew how make you feel space as well as time, freedom and funk.cats who think orchestrally about groove--bout how you motivate and levitate your bandmates and your audience with the kit.most definitely herbie's'butterfly' at end.
I graduated with a dual major in jazz composition and classical composition at Berklee nine years ago. I now teach at Juilliard, specializing in modal harmony & counterpoint and I have also written two books on the subject that were recently publish. Additionally, I am a studio musician (mainly classical/jazz piano, classical/jazz/gypsy guitar, & cello) and I compose film scores for major motion pictures.
and for a jazz pianist, you don't have hardly ANY jazz (except for one keith jarrett video) on your favorites. Most people that love jazz that have over 100 favorited videos would have some... all you have are martial arts moves and guitar shredding... i can hardly believe such a musically inclined person as yourself would only have that.
I deleted my account awhile ago, which was under a different user name. I found myself killing too much time. Instead, I occasionally use my buddies account which is always logged in because he fails to clear the cookies in IE.
Name a major motion picture? Well I admit, it has been sometime since I composed for a motion picture. However, most recently I was called in to solo on the Halo 3 soundtrack. Yes, its rock...but I also enjoy the energy of rock music (some of it anyways) and it pays the mortgage. Also, It was an amazing experience talking to Steve Vai!
i'm not saying that's false. I'm sure you're a musician, but you're not a teacher at juliard and you're not a major film composer. Sure you may be a studio musician and the like, but you said a lot of bullshit.
I go to New England Conservatory, and I learned fast that every musician who will be successful has a skill to take virtually any art form - whether Hip Hop, Jazz, Metal, Hardcore, etc.- and apply it to their own music, not only making the musician more knowledgeable, but also more interesting to listen to. I can't imagine that you could deny an art form as vast and influential as Hip Hop and consider yourself a respectable composer.
3510211, it's great that you went to Berklee and now teach at Juilliard. That's quite impressive to be teaching at such a well-respected school. However, you clearly missed the point that to succeed in the world of music, you have to be open to plenty of different genres. To disregard Hip Hop as an art form and insult incredible musicians such as J Dilla and Wu-Tang clan is incredibly limiting. Hip hop affects all art forms today.
I love this cat..His phrasing is just crazy.....but sooo many cats don't know about him or don't understand his style...but I keep telling cats there is more than 1 thru 4 in music theres the "e" the "and" and "ah" and PLACEMENT!!!!
That true man.....some cats just don't understand what Chris is doing on a musical or creative level...He's so creative and his musicality is crazy....
Average example huh? Dennis is the one who turned me onto Chris! He told me point blank "Chris is wild man, you should check him out.." that was two years ago. And Virgil? I've had him over my house couple times, and he knocked me on my ass with his chops. He's probably the closest person I've met that probably knows almost everything there is to know about drumming. Now I haven't personally met Morgen or Tomas but I'm personally digging the flesh quartet stuff and I absolutely LOVE Meshuggah.
Great video. Chris Dave is one of my favorites and this is great footage of him. Not to quibble, but he won't literally blow you away... only figuratively. :)
Oooh, I don't know man. Lol, I cannot tell you how many times my friends and I came flying out of our chairs each time we caught him pulling off some outlandish chops stuff or crazy metric modulation.
Put it this way, I found myself on the floor more than I was in my chair. At one point I jokingly asked one of the waitresses to kindly just remove my chair and give to someone who might get more use out of it! *lolll*
"just out-of-this-world! Anyone serious in seeing amazing playing that will inspire you to run back to your place and practice your ass off, check Chris out live. He will literally, blow you away. =]" -depends on the persons skill level, but if you really want to be true to your statement, checkout Morgen Agren or Tomas Haake or Dennis Chambers or Virgil Donati- their playing actually makes you want to forever practice- not this average example.
you can't compare man.....the drummer's you were mentioning are totally different styles...if that's what inspires you then so be it...Chris Dave is on another level of thinking musically and you have to have in mind that the styles he plays is jazz/hip-hop/experimental etc...it's very differnent from Dennis Chambers or Thomas Lang....you don't see Chris Dave's creativity anywhere...he is just nuts......very different and is not sounding like any cats out there on the scene...he is his own
I actually like this guys playing a lot. He is refreshingly original within his style. I meant that the physical/chops playing level of this guy isnt there with the drummers I mentioned, but his ideas are respected!
I do have to disagree with you on your statement of"you don't see Chris Dave's creativity anywhere"- yes you do, his name is Morgen Agren. He is experimental/jazz/metal. His playing, creativity and musicality are alien and beyond just about everybody. Listen to Fred's solo album.

BTW, I am just as much a guitarist as I am pianist. I love incorporating harmonic and melodic ideas commonly played by pianists on the guitar.

i'm not saying that's false. I'm sure you're a musician, but you're not a teacher at juliard and you're not a major film composer. Sure you may be a studio musician and the like, but you said a lot of bullshit.

I am also a part time producer, working with artists under the Universal label.

then you of all people should know how stupid you are to denounce hip-hop as a legitimate musical style and to deny its ties to current jazz music.

I'm not trying to be mean, but it just seems so ridiculous to look down on everything that has stemmed from Rap and Hip Hop.
olimann900 3 years ago
olimann900 you got it backwards, rap and hip hop stemmed from jazz

=]" -depends on the persons skill level, but if you really want to be true to your statement, checkout Morgen Agren or Tomas Haake or Dennis Chambers or Virgil Donati- their playing actually makes you want to forever practice- not this average example.
sn47som 3 years ago
you can't compare man.....the drummer's you were mentioning are totally different styles...if that's what inspires you then so be it...Chris Dave is on another level of thinking musically and you have to have in mind that the styles he plays is jazz/hip-hop/experimental etc...it's very differnent from Dennis Chambers or Thomas Lang....you don't see Chris Dave's creativity anywhere...he is just nuts......very different and is not sounding like any cats out there on the scene...he is his own
SoulDrumma 3 years ago
I actually like this guys playing a lot. He is refreshingly original within his style. I meant that the physical/chops playing level of this guy isnt there with the drummers I mentioned, but his ideas are respected!
I do have to disagree with you on your statement of"you don't see Chris Dave's creativity anywhere"- yes you do, his name is Morgen Agren. He is experimental/jazz/metal. His playing, creativity and musicality are alien and beyond just about everybody. Listen to Fred's solo album.

I didn't mean it as literally anywhere...

I know.... I was just trying to project other drummers that have incredible musicality and creativity as well, cuz theres so many out there.
