Gismonti's music impressed and enriched me so much, especially in my late teens... so that I've composed a piece for guitar dedicated to him and Nana Vasconcelos when I used to listen to Danca das Cabecas hundreds times (but Debussy was also a big influence). I would be very happy if someone who likes Gismonti's music in general would give a listen to this piece of mine and let me know his/her opinion: the title here on YT is HOMAGES N.3 A EGBERTO GISMONTI NANA VASCONCELOS (IL NAUFRAGO) (1985)
The recordings this trio did on in the 80's ("Magico" & "Folk Songs") are exquisite. I am an aging saxophonist, and Garbarek is one of my absolute favorites because of his sound, entire concept, approach to the music. Unique and immediately identifiable, but truly underappreciated. I generally prefer his playing on other's recordings, as his own tend to get a bit too brooding and homogenous left on his own. Recommend: all w/K. Jarrett - esp. "Luminessence"; w/Ralph Towner; w/Hilliard Ensemble.
Garbarek blows a world of emotions through his sax and gives it back to us in perfumed, hypnotic notes. Listening to his live music, it's the most surprising way to try the experience of an unforgettable emotional trance.
When I listen to such kind of music I feel the spirit of life. There is no word or other verbal communication which can convey so much spirit. It is just music which can do...
I have no word to describe what I feel. Just one for sure, I feel so sad for I can't roll back the time, buy tickets for this concert to hear it in LIVE... Unfortunately I was born too late, just in '85 :-) thanks to soulseek for a great video. If more people start to listen to music like this, more people will start thinkin' in a different way, music (like painting) changes man, it touches the deepest parts of our souls and brings us special emotions!!!
I love Garbarek. Have a ton of his music. He is a master in his own right. But here? Nah! I would have preferred Shorter or someone like that. Sorry, its a bit like Kenny-G sitting in with the Mahawishnu Orchestra.
Ah! How good to go to music like this on the internet, and find people who enjoy as well:-) Best Space love! Any good advice for other clips to enjoy? I personally recomend 1) A bit of Django Reinhardt/Stephane Graphelli. 2) Some Hendrix (f.ex Instrumental Solo - Woodstock). 3) Nina Simone live in Harlem. 4) Richie Havens (f.ex Tupelo Honey/Just like a Woman) 5. Ornette Coleman. I dont like lists much, but i love music :-)
I'm throwin' down for Ralph Towner, Martin Simpson, and of course Pierre Bensusan. And for my friends D. Willis and Rick Sabo. In the meantime, just follow anywhere Egberto takes you. Egberto tells God WHAT. You should listen to him. And after you're sated on that, listen to some early to mid 80's era Oregon. Follow that course with some Eberhard Weber. Then see if you can find Michel Gentiles. God, I wish I had a desert island. Need time to discover more of this... Shiver me frikkin' timbers.
@ulriktrille Maby you posted long time ago, but anyways since I like your idea for "advice" - I will do it with following a "small key" of mine. Ok. What I think - artists known very well to wide audience, Hendrix or like Coltrane (mr Garbarek here started playing thanks to him some say...) and such (greate!) artists, I allow myself to recomend people I believe are as much fantastic musicians, but not "worldwide" known...
@ulriktrille Can I add my two cents' worth? :) 1) Pat Metheny - Are you going with me? 2) Buika - Mi niña Lola 3) Anoushka Shankar - Ancient Love 4) Al Green - Stay with me 5) Oystein Sevag - Evening (and any-any-anything by him - he is from your neck of the woods and UNREAL!)
Much Musical Love from France...
Have only today discovered Gabarek and people he teams up with, especially the Indian chanting. Wonderful discovery.
@ulriktrille If you liked this, you would probably love Ralph Towner or Keith Jarrett (try My Song with Garbarek as well as standards with Gary Peacock and Jack D). There is a bunch of Garbarek videos on U-Tube as well. Pat Metheny and Charlie Haden did a great recording together "Beyond The Missouri Sky". There are several songs here on U-Tube from that CD.
This is the music we should be putting into the drives of our satelites, and deep space probes, and sending them out into deep black of space. Time is so bendable out there. If there's anyone else out there in the swirling nebulae, I want them to find out about us through the wormhole of this music. I think we'll find some mind-bending tones. If you want to figure out interstellar travel? Part of your engineering is going to have to involve music. This music. Jus' say'n.
I really think that this is the best music i have ever heard. Ive listened to this maybe 100 times, since U-Tube came around. I have listened to,and enjoyed many many thousands of records, concerts, bands. This is totally fucking amazing :-) Anyone with me? Btw Big thanks to Soulseek for posting this. You made my life richer. Thx :-) U.
More fantastic ECM music!! Thanks for posting! I didnt think I could be more blown away by this video and some of the other stuff on youtube. Thanks Rob Tullius
Is it true or am I dreaming? Pleasant pain, sweet dream, tears, all healing from the darkest true fairy tails. I need to fall in love right now! All I was told till now was bullshit, these guys are the only ones who speak the truth...yummy, lecker(GER), dolce vita ;-)
Yes, I love this kind of jazz and I know it should be beautiful...and in general it is... but somehow I cannot convince myself that Garbarek's solos are not actually boring...
The Gismonti-Haden concert in Montreal is my absolutely favourite and beloved CD, but listening to the trio's recordings (the same applies to his CDs with Bobo Stenson trio) I can't escape the feeling that Garbarek with his constantly weeping saxophone is just redundant... Sorry for that, but this is just my feeling :-(
Yes this is an extraordinary combination of musical talents from a time in the eighties when so much great music was being produced under the guidance of Manfred Eicher. I love garbarek in this mood....would like to find also a video of the Personal Mountains recordings with Keith Jarret>>>Wow i just love that curved soprano!!!!
Oh yes, thank you for sharing this incredible collaboration. I am lucky to be able to see Charlie Haden live fairly often. I have never seen Gismonti live but would love, love, love to. This is my favorite youtube posting of all time!
What a great trio. "Magico" is the album that hooked me into ECM, so I'm overjoyed to be able to watch them play. Thank you so much, soulseek, for posting this clip.
I'm sitting here in Moab, Utah, USA, astonished by the music coming from Europe. I've been listening to jazz for fifty-five years, experienced bop with Parker, Shearing, Tristano and then in the fifties with Blakey, Silver, Shorter, Herbie. Of course we had Brecker during the eighties but not much more. The hope of jazz is coming from Europe, and Poland is a surprise leader.
I never saw Egberto live {unfortunally} or even on tv or so. This is the first time I see playing him. This is amazing. Never touched more by a musician than Gismonti, Garbarek,Hayden {and Metheny for that matter} Their music is beyond music....

Oh yes, thank you for sharing this incredible collaboration. I am lucky to be able to see Charlie Haden live fairly often. I have never seen Gismonti live but would love, love, love to. This is my favorite youtube posting of all time!

Been into ECM since my early twenties, circa 1982, great label, alot of truly awesome music. Garbarek is one of the few best European saxists ever.
