We got our dogs in the fall and they didn't start swimming until spring when they were 9 months. At 1 yr Porties have a lot of energy and enjoy doing things that they consider work. You should have no problem introducing him to the joy of water sports. They love to help and if you boy is already swimming then you are well on your way to having a diving dog, it's in their genes.
my porty is one year now, and we haven't been training with him underwater at all. but he loves water, tho! haha, but my question is.. is it too late to start now? you know, trying to make him swim under water end get things? i guess we should've startet earlier, but he loves swimming, so do you think it's okey?
As pups we our let PWD's play in large water dishes and the bath tub. We have a sand box full of water and a couple of pails outside to play in. We have special toys for fetch and water play. We developed a high toy drive and they will do anything to retrieve the toy. For diving we started them retieving in the small pool and near shore, then gradually went deeper. With a strong toy drive he will do it on his own. Great for Dock Diving and Disc Dogs as well. Lucy Madison Bayport on facebook.
I have a 3 month old portie and want to teach him how to fetch under water! How do you begin to train that??! How old was your dog before you started training her? Great job btw!
@andre8617 hey its kind of hard to train your portie to go underwater but eventually they will. It also depends on the dog whether it likes the water hates it or is ok with it. currently my 12 week old porty dives underwater with ease. It good to start of at a young age in my opinion. you can train him to go underwater by getting his favorite toy and putting it barely under water that way he can see it and knows it is their. Eventually he will get the toy.
