  • Most if these comments don't make sense to me. I din't care who and who dies not like the Dead, but I cannot fathom having nothing better to do to look and listen to music I hate just to pick a fight and be an ass. If you hate it then, bye-bye!

  • This is the song I hear in my head when i ride my Harley. It comes on just before Slayer War Ensamble.

  • Great freakin' song man!!!

  • One of my faves too :D

  • You fuckin' assholes below me! Thanks alot! Ya know I was perfectly happy in life thinking this song was about a girl. Yall ruined it!!!

  • @Dedhedted71

Well hey now Ted, you might take comfort in knowing that Barlow goes to great lengths explaining about how this is a song of necessary dualities; dying & being born, men & women, desolation & hope. So yes, it is a nod to the death of Neil Cassady, but also the birth of Cassidy Law, Eileen's daughter. Barlow pegs her as "a beautiful and self-possessed young women of 20" in the summer of 1990.

  • Thank you for the enlightenment my brother! I hope you realize my comment was somewhat in jest. I'm not really mad at the good folks below. Just my somewhat humorous way of conveying my befuddlement over the meaning of this song. Thats why I like youtube. Sometimes you can just spout off like an idiot & have fun doing so. LOL!

  • Since Cassady was a guy(and Cassidy is a great girl name), I decided to name my first boy Dean a tribute to Cassady and Kerouac.... tried naming my second boy Sal...wife boycotted that one.

  • I wouldn't name my kids after drunken bums. No way. And I'm no homophobe, but I don't name my kids after homos, either.

  • these "drunken bums" are talented.

    l:

  • xxxjordan, the drunken bums and homos I was referring to are Jack Kerouac and his friend, not the Grateful Dead, but I stand by my statement whomever it applies to. I am a fan of the Grateful Dead, though. My favorite Pigpen song is Easy Wind. I play guitar in a couple of cover bands and we love doing Dead stuff. They are talented.

  • Oh all right, I thought you meant them.

  • sal after who?

  • the comments are classic. one of the best intros to any song ever, maybe I'll name my daughter Cassidy.

  • A friend of mine did. Go for it!

  • it really don't get much better than that, such a good tune

  • This song is named after Neil Cassidy.

  • It was actually written after Neil Cassady died and Cassidy Law was born into the Grateful Dead family. She channeled Neal.

  • I named my cat after this song!

  • my friend was named after this song (:

  • Im trippin right now and im gonna name my dog after you

  • Hahaha!

  • wow, I heard this song when I was tripping on LSD and I named my dog after the song.

  • I was named after this song. My mom went to a concert and said that if they played this song this was what i would be named.

  • hey, i named my child after this song....grateful dead will always live on

  • my gym teacher told me her like brother or cousin or someone named his child after this song.

  • That's a shame, man. Why?

  • Comment removed

  • how??

  • Bear- its crazy that a family so close can be so far away and still in touch! Independent, Green, never hungry for long. Dig it. The music here is a simple common ground, this song is an example that even when we lose a member; band member, crew member, promotor or fan they are always remebered. Thanks YouTube for having this wonderful site and all the enjoyment that you make available!

  • oooh child of boundless seas!

  • wats this song really about.. Neal??

  • yeah

  • o thanks alot i love you

  • This has always been one of my favorite songs. I always thought it was about Neal and Eilleen's daughter. Doesn't matter I think it is a great tune.

  • it is. about their daughter

  • Wow! Can't believe there are such stoopid homophobic comments here! Fuck you idiots. This is a great song. BTW, this is off a Bob Weir album "Ace" Not a true GD album.

  • haha half their songs arent true gd songs lol

  • Nicademus666, are you an idiot? Ace may be a "Bob Weir album", but the "backing band" on the album is the rest of the GD. It IS a "true GD album".

  • It's crazy how Deadheads aren't succesful, wealthy, good memebers of the community isn't it? It's crazy that Deadheads don't just need money and posessions to make themselves happy isn't it? It's insane they don't live the way life was planned for them, and yet they're still happy.

  • Wow the comments... PEACE

  • what you are, is what you're meant to be

  • Hey "superqueer13" you are an imature duche bag! HAHAHAHA SUPERQUEER13

  • haha i guess shes butch cassidy. besides cassidys a guys name!!!

  • for God's sake, my friend, do, please, google Cassidy's tale. And mr. Barlow, where ever your spirit and soul exist may you be blessed

  • youre gay

  • Google Cassidy's Tale.

  • wish i was called cassidy!!!

  • i was named after this song. i really like it too! its very catchy!

  • And that's okay! :D

  • why am i gay?

  • wait ignore my comment ha sorry

  • Glassgremlin is correct

  • lol my mom named me after this song

  • Here's what the songwriter John Perry Barlow says about it in his essay on the song, Cassidy's Tale:

It is also about a Cassady and a Cassidy, Neal Cassady and Cassidy Law.

(The title could be spelled either way as far as I'm concerned, but I think it's officially stamped with the latter. Which is appropriate since I believe the copyright was registered by the latter's mother, Eileen Law.)

  • I spoke with Bobby in 1981(In the Providence Marriott) and he confirmed that Cassidy was about Neal:

The song is about Neal Cassady who Jack Keroauc wrote most famously about in "On the Road" which was published in 1957 and was about 1940's adventures. Neal then drove the bus for Ken Kesey and was a friend and room-mate of a very young Bob Weir as the Dead was the house band for Kesey's "Acid Tests". Hence, they changed the second "a" to an "i" and Cassady became Cassidy.

    FACT

  • "this dude doesn't know what he's talking about"

You need to know your history.

I DO know what I'm talking about.

U are on the 2nd and 3rd generational name level.

Jack and Neal are from where it all flows.

I don't hold it against U the fact that U just haven't learned yet.

  • History is LOST on those who do NOT want to know IT. ALL the names came AFTER Jack and Neal. U R talking 70 years.
  • U R rite in that it is not easily defined,

    BUT

    "Florida Seabirds"

is ALL about Jack and Neal

    and the 1940's exploits,

all the other names and such came

    afterwards.

    scatter like lost words

  • it's "flight of the seabirds" not Florida seabirds

  • touche

  • florida seabirds? what song exactly are you talking about?

  • accustic or electric, Jerry was one of the top guitarist of ALL TIME!

  • its about both u geniuses...like alot o dead tunes,,,theses shant be easily defined...do not define....enjoy!

  • this dude doesn't know what he's talking about Cassidy is about Eileen Law's daughter who runs the mail order

  • you are so correct!

  • UR so wrong

  • The song is about Neal Cassady who Jack Keroauc wrote most famously about in "On the Road" which was published in 1957 and was about 1940's adventures. Neal then drove the bus for Ken Kesey and the Merry Prankster in the 60's and was a friend and room-mate of a very young Bob Weir as the Dead was the house band for Kesey's "Acid Tests". Hence, they changed the second "a" to an "i" and Cassady became Cassidy. That is the one minute version. Look it up and read and be amazed.

  • no kidding. Cassady was also "cowboy neal at the wheel of the bus to never-ever land" from "The Other One"

  • Cassidy isn't about neal caddady it's about Eileen Law's daughter who was raised up pretty much by Bobby, Eileen used to run the mail order

  • Beautiful song, beautiful name, i love you all.

  • I didn't know I had a song! Haha!

My name is Cassidy Diann Sharp. :)

  • My name is Cassidy also (Male)

My father named after this song!

  • My best friends' daughter's names are Cassidy and Sage !

  • i am named after this song it rocks

  • I am David Cassidy and I am the god of hellfire!!

  • I was named after this song.

  • A great rendition, second to the cow palace version in 74... fucking amazing.

  • I think of Dean Moriarty.

I think of Dean Mor i ar ty.

Keroauc died in Florida in 1969 of a burst tummy and his wing man Neal died in 1967 counting the rail rod ties in Mexico.

I like this acoustic version a lot.

Rode an elevator with Micky H right around this time.

  • im a deadhead myself! my bestfriend was named cassidy after this song. i guess she isnt the only one, huh?

  • most amazing song i was named after it and when i was six my dad he was the one who named me and if you read the lyrics it was as if he knew he didnt have long to live

  • Great song, although not the best version....some of the sbd shows w/ Cassidy from the late 70's are so much better. Dean, keep on the road kid, thanks for schooling the custies, know that at least one other person here's riding with ya! The bus came by and I got on that's when it all began..........there was cowboy Neal at the wheel to nevereverland.

  • Haha I'm named after this song :P

  • so is my wife. beautiful song, beautiful name

  • so is my bestfriend hahaaha

  • Easily one of my top 100 Dead tunes. I named a miniature Dachshund after this song. She lived to be 17 1/2 years old. If I'd had any female kids, likely Cassidy would have been in the name somewhere.

  • Goddamn, I love acoustic Dead.... Great shit!

  • yeah!

  • my favorite dead is acoustic, nothing better than working a hard day in the Texas sun, gettng home, throwing some ice in the bong and jammin some dead

  • whoa.

my friend was named after this song too.

actually, shes sitting right next to me.

    XD

  • My parents were going to name me Cassidy if I was a girl, as they were Deadheads as well. But now that I am one myself, I'm changing my name to Cassidy. ^^

  • Well it's not really just a girls name you know, in all actuality the title of this song refers not just to a girl, but also the holy goof, Neal Cassady! It's kind of about the cycle of life as Neal had died and Cassidy had been born around the same time.

  • cassidy rules! i wuz named after this song!

  • OY. Time for the senior citizens to step in.

    1. When they were aroud the term "jam band" hadn't even been coined.

    2. Bobby is the lead on Cassidy but Jerry was the "front" man, as much as they could be said to have a "front" man.

    3. Either you get 'em or you don't.

  • I think they alternated front men to preserve their voices.

  • i think we all dont have to anylyze the dead. How about Bobby has a beautiful voice and so does jerry. Dead is about the music and the good times and the no worries not people trying to anylyze every single little thing. In my opinion the dead probably didnt have a front man they were a musical group a family. Jerry garcia was as important in the bands eyes as Phil lesh was and micky hart and weir. Their a musical group not "Jerry Garcia and the grateful dead" or "bob Weir and his buddies" haha

  • ohh i geuss u know it all then

  • Their front man was Garcia you dumbass, and his voice is a Beautiful fit with the music they play. Get Musically educated man.

  • Hey, it's Bobby Weir that's the front man. Jerry Garcia isn't singing here, he's just picking away, stage right. Weir has a fine voice though. I love this song.

  • I believe Garcia once joked that he saved Weir from singing in divorcée bars in Atlantic City. Weir's voice was often schmaltzy, but did fit many of their songs perfectly.

Garcia was the Dead but I don't think he'd ever refer to himself as a "frontman".

  • There singing is just fine, it fits their style perfectly. Besides, they're a jam band, I don't think their main focus was how well they could sing.

  • damn man their singing was fine for what they were doing... you can't tell me bob weir didn't deliver his old americana style songs with an immense voicing and tonal quality. the notes might not be as operatic and perfect as some trained singers but what can you do?

  • ur a doosh

  • the vids are gone because rhino and mr weir have decided not to let anyone see this music in vid or mp3 without paying first. thus shoving the very last lonely dagger into the heart of intimate americana and left to bleed out until this era and music is completely corporated and forgot to time...sniffle

    RHINO BOYCOTT

  • This is great. I was named after this song.

  • my names cassidy and my mom and my dad named me after this song. they've followed the grateful dead forever. there dead heads all the way. this song is my favoritee.(:

  • I am finding many Dead video's are being removed??? Does anyone know why?? For those of you kind enough to upload them, please don't remove....your breakin my heart

  • the wall between us...cassidy wald and i THE BEST MOVIE EVER!!! this is the theme

  • what movie?

  • o wouldnt you like to know

  • one of my favorite songs

  • great footage.

  • never forgetful always grateful

great intimate performance.. shows another side of the band

  • Obviously there should be more than 2 comments bye now unless we are forgetful and not grateful.
