Eric is so lucky to have a father who understands the importance of education and someone who is that strong when other people would let what she said prob hit somewhere deep inside, he doesn't care, he knows he's a better person and thats what matters, such a good dad!
They had to have the Oleson family on this show. They represent the cold truth of life. Not everyone is going to like you and people do try to destroy each other. If everyone on this show just sat around being happy and getting along we'd all barf and change the channel. What a boring show that would be! There'd be no moral to the story and the kids watching it wouldn't learn that life's tough sometimes but you can still make it through and say "ah well, screw those a**holes!" Kids gotta learn!
I feel so sorry for Eric...He reminds of one of my friends at the jr. college, he's bright, and a forigner from German, people make fun of him because of his accent and his parents struggle with English...the Shiller family reminds me so much of his family, they are so kind and work so hard...

i'm certain that he can read German in an excellent way. For instance, I just moved to Germany, from the U.S. I have a Master's degree, but I cannot read or write in German. I intend to learn, but by German standards I could be considered illiterate.
This clip is misleading. Germany always had one of the best public schooling in the west. Only Germans living in rural areas didn't take up school. Mind you many didn't go on to College, but neither did many Americans in the 1880's. The fact that so many kids in Walnut Grove earn scholarships to college is silly.
Poor Eric was so nervous at the spelling bee and I just wanted to smack Harriet for distracting him, sometimes she is so irritating and annoying. UGH!
At least the spelling words were taken "word for word" from the spelling match they had during one of the Literaries in "Little Town on the Prarie"...so on ocassion they do refer to the books!
