I love Ray Price when he was still a Cherokee Cowboy, a protoge of Hank Williams Sr, before he went all "cosmopolitan." This period was the pinnacle of Country music.
I still maintain that the reason nobody hears real country in these times is because number 138. Attack on U.S.A., was the 'elbowing' of real country music by the controlling communistic, God-hating control freaks that infest our political world. People from all around the globe loved proper American country music because it spoke eloquently of ALL our lives in an uncomplicated way that is sadly missed now.
@horsemad1670 Communistic god haters took out real country music? Whoa, that sounds like some genuine paranoia there, calm down. I love these classic country songs and I despise most modern country, but I don't think "commies" had shit to do with what happened to country music. I can tell your mind is stuck in some kind of 1950's commie fear/paranoia.
Actually, the pedal steel sound caught on pretty quickly after "Slowly" came out in 1954. By the time this was filmed, pedal steel was pretty common. Interestingly, the original 1955 record of this song featured Don Helms on non-pedal steel. BTW jon1156, you are correct. Pedals, along with knee levers raise and lower the pitch of individual strings (often the octave pair), usually by a half or whole step.
This is from the mid-fifties, and the steel guitar has pedals. Webb Pierce was the first to incorporate the pedal steel, and it gave a differnent sound. Hank Williams Sr and Carl Smith generally had NON pedal steel, while webb piecre and ray price usually had the newest in steel development
I have tried to play guitar with my arm against the back of it as Ray does here but it just doesn't work for me. I don't know if my arm isn't long enough or if it's just not a right feeling for me. Ha. Of course, anything Ray does is all right with me. I have to listen to this one at least once a day. You can tell he's a great entertainer and a crowd pleaser just watching him on camera. Hearing and seeing the Opry gang here too is lots of fun. Thanks once more for posting. - Paula
I have loved Ray for ever and ever. His voice is as wonderful as ever and having seen him in concert several times in the past few years he always pleases his audience. Ray always looks so classy and just plain wonderful - Thanks - Paula
Saw him opening for Willie Nelson last Friday in Montreal Canada. He sang for over an hour. Still has a solid voice. It was a great pleasure to see him.
I also have to say"this is real country music, not the so called country music of today" but, there are a few that could sng like this if the promoters would let them. They should do like waylon, do their their on arangements.Get back to the basics
hell yeah! This is real country music. Not this pop/rock crap tyey put on the radio. Theres only one damn day I can hear the classics and I cant cause its on Sunday! It is real sad that they wont put it on everyday

That steel part was so ahead of its time!
gospelmusiclover48 2 years ago
Can you elaborate on that? What makes it different from a typical steel part from that period? I love steel guitar but I don't know much about it.

Thanks - I did not know that. Do the pedals affect the pitch of individual strings?
jon1156 2 years ago
yes, they probably turn a 1 chord into a 4
gospelmusiclover48 2 years ago
That is one possibility, yes. They're also good for moving tones/ breaking chords, etc. Look up Ralph Mooney for a fine example of pedal usage.
