  • Thanks for the great tutorial! I just bought two from the health food store tonight, and very much look forward to making some coconut milk. BTW, you're a pro at getting the meat out! Though you've probably had a lot of practice. Where did you get that spatula? And what kind is it?

    Cheers!

  • Great video. Thanks!

  • Thank you SO much! I went straight to my fridge and easily opened the coconut that i'd spent most of the afternoon unsuccessfully trying to open!! Looking forward to my other one tomorrow for breakfast :o)

  • omgaaaah i've been feeling like scrat from ice age for an hour!!!!

  • i love this video! i bought a machete and was going to town with my coconut outside making a big mess. after watching this i tried it and it was awesome! thank you!

  • Thanks for the great video! We nailed the opening part on the first try! (Getting the inner layer of yummy stuff out in one piece is going to take a bit of practice, though...)

  • hey steffy sue sweetie i bought a young thai coconut today from walmart, brought it home, opened it and the meat was purple-ish ! so i threw it out. it was bad right? im gonna try buying one from a health store.

  • You are adorable.

  • hmm, would it be more money and energy efficient to just buy a can of coconut juice with the meat inside or to open one up

    regardless, great video!

  • Nevermind, I got it

  • I only have a usuba knife, a large one with no ridges, a bread knife, steak knives, and two small ones. Would any of those work?

  • I tried eating my way throught the middle. Don't do it, eat doesn't taste like I thought it would.

  • i mean coconuts lol

  • il bet after she said YUM!!!! then said signing off because it tasted so bad and then cut, shes like ugggh so disgusting... Just kidding it actually taste really really good i love cococuts.

  • Anyone ever told you you have a lovely bunch of coconuts? Haha. Seriously though, this is the best video on how to safely open a young coconut I have seen on youtube. I have seen some really dangerous methods on here but yours looks the best.

  • Wow, this is great.Thanks

  • great video (& music) but im still having trouble......power tools??

  • you see when women stay in the kitchen, good things happen. thanks for the vid

  • you sound so cute explaining that, I'm gonna try your method next time. It was brutal trying to brute force open it the first time before watching this video! Thanks Steffy

  • yah im gona die nowlol cause i didnt know what a young coconut was and i tried eating the outside (which tasted horrible!). and now after watching this i realize that was a bad idea.

  • she is a cutie

  • sooooooo useful awesome vid thanks

  • Thank you so much for posting this video - I eat young coconut often but I struggle to open it (and I use a cleaver but I think I'm bad at it too due to fear). And this was so educational (eg leaving the plastic on the outside when cutting it open due to the preserving toxins on the outside). I also want to find that spatula - it is awesome!

  • THANK YOU SO~~~ MUCH!!!! you saved me! omg. you don't know what i went through to open a coconut!!! uh!!! but... i really needed to open coconut to have my mother drink this because of her health condition. you SAVED US! thank you. thank you. bless you. wow.. thanks. (i saw so~~~ many videos but... yours was THE ONE!!!)

  • what is the brand of that spatula...I have looked all over for one like that and have had no luck.

  • boy, i sure don't get to the comment page much! sorry...it is from vitamix and you can order them online!

  • @SteffySue thanks....great video. I never knew it was so easy to open one.

  • @SteffySue you wouldn't happen to have a part number would you? Google is bringing up several types.

  • Awesome!!!!!

  • I know she makes it look easy, but I bought my third coconut from whole foods and this method works perfectly, just keep your hand out of the way when you are just starting out. But after a while you get the hang of it.

  • Thank you for this awesome video! Blessings!!

  • Thanks! I bought a young coconut because it was on sale and always wanted to learn how to open one. You are clearly knowledgeable and skilled at your craft.

  • Thank You:) This video was very helpful

  • Very helpful thanks. My knife doesn't have raised edge at the heel so I basically hammered it till it cracked, still beats trying to cut it. or using a crowbar

  • great video

  • Wow.. Useful info....

  • thanks, very helpful

  • Very Good peresentation.

    Thanks for sharing these!

  • Don't do that with the heel of your knife! I just tried it, and the coconut wound up being stronger. I wound up getting the coconut open, but it cost me a $250 knife. DO invest in a hatchet, machete, or strong knife, folks.

  • wow coconut water is like nothing i've ever tasted. i don't know whether to love it or hate it hah. it just tastes like electrons or something

  • Finally I'm shown the right way to open without using a hammer even though the effort has been worthwhile. Thank you!

  • cute hair! and thanks for the vid. i'll try it now

  • steffy sue is soooo hott!! ive been eating coconuts non-stop for her! call me!

  • at first she seems like a funny hippy, but then you see she knows what she's talking about, and is in fact a real chef! go chef steffy sue! we all want more of you!

  • Wow, thank God I found a way, Ive been stabbing at it with a knife the whole time lol.

  • Um...I just drank like, half a liter of lavender coconut water!!! LMAO.

    It was pretty yummy...

  • Thank you Chef Steffy Sue! Just got into buying my own fresh, young coconuts and breaking them open after months of drinking the bottled variety- what a difference! My method was a little rough, but I can't wait to try what I learned from your awesome video!

    I'm a new fan!

  • DAM you're good.

  • Love your video, are there any risks in drinking too much coconut water? Thank you

  • @whipzoom

if you ONLY drink coconut water for a week you get diarrhea.LOL

  • Check out this website for organic young thai coconuts.. They ship them overnight from Thailand lol.

  • This video is older but I stumbled across it a few mins ago and she was talking about all the stuff used to preserve the outer appearance and also it doesnt penetrate the shell to contaminate the inner coconut, however not to sound mean but she does a lovely job opening the nut but pours the water all over the outer shell and into the cup. Well there went the non-contaminated drink!!! Thanks though wonderful video

  • @adultinfo123 before anyone says BUT she left the plastic on, well pesticides are known to penetrate thin layers of plastic so I would not trust that

  • Very informative and straight to the point. Thanks for posting this it really helped.

  • your method is the best I've seen. Leaving the plastic on was new to me.

  • wow! it looks so easy. i should have checked you out before putting the hammer on the coconut for the first time. it was a disaster. i felt like tom hanks in castaway! thanks also for the bit of info on the coconuts.

  • Thanks a lot. It resolved my problem. I but two coconut yesterday & i gone mad opening one of those. I looked into youtube and you as an Angel helped me out. I was not able to clearly listen the plastic device name to remove the creame inside so if you can please post the name so i can google and get it. Thanks

  • Thank you, I would've never opened this damn thing if not for this video :P

The inside of the coconut smells soooo amazing...

  • thank you, now I know the proper way to open it...so much easier than attacking it with a hammer and trying to drill into it

  • Well done!

  • I could drink a gallon of that coconut water

  • hahaha that's so awesome how you just cut all the meat at once, my jaw dropped because i find it so hard to do that.

  • Great info, thanks! I had young coconuts every morning at Bonnaroo and it really helped me stay hydrated in the hot sun.

  • might become use full advise when having the flu-hydration

  • You're my Hero.

  • Great video! Thanks for this!

  • Thanks for posting this~ so helpful was able to perfectly open my first one! Delicious and healthy.

  • Question: I got some young Thai coconuts last night and opened one of them and the water was clear but it had a sweet yet pungent taste to it. and the meat wasn't white but more of a light grayish color. what exactly does a fresh young coconut look like

  • A fresh young coconut should have clear water and the meat should be white, but soft. The water and meat should taste a little sweet, not bitter or pungent.

  • Very good video! Also if you like to hues the husk for things that is a great way to seperate the husk from the coconut.

Didi you know that Once exposed to air, coconut water rapidly loses most of its organoleptic and nutritional characteristics?

  • god there so hard to open with a knife...

  • Buy Organic Young Coconuts!! Never sprayed or treated. Forget about those pesticide ridden coconuts.

  • Where?? I live in the Bay Area, in Berkeley, and I can't find them anywhere. I would love to!

  • I get them flown in from Thailand right to JFK here in Fresh Meadows NY (718)353-4807 on the west coast there should be more places to get them. I'll try to find out for you

  • I just posted a video response with my young coconut video because I use the technique you do. Thanks for the INFO! It's A LOT easier now.

  • Wow! You make that look so easy.

  • It is SO easy! Try it! ;)

  • I did! Check out my videos.

I just bought a cleaver and a rubber spatula so I can do it a little easier.

  • formaldehyde's a preservation liquid that the coconut husk is soaked in, also used to preserve dead bodies so they do not decay before services. many folks, such as morticians, come into contact with it daily and many don't consider that toxic. anyway, it would contaminate the coconut water i suppose! that's why it's important to leave the plastic on & pour the water out with a swift pour, not a drizzle. besides, most of the husk in the contact area is shaved away when using this method. thanks!

  • What happens if a piece of the formaldehyde comes into contact with the liquid?
