i know you didnt ask me but i jig fish alot and i would say remove the brush guard completly if you swiming the trailer or keep entirly if your imitateing a crwfish. but to acualy answer the question with the guard or not itl be easy to set.
since most bass hit from the side of the lure rather then the back. its not too big of a deal. but you dont want to put an 7 inch trailer on or anything crazy.
what is bad about a long skirt? wouldnt it give more action?

yes but jigs are minly ussed to imitate a crwfish and with that trailer it looks more realistic.

you dont think that trailers a little big? i usally cut mine little less then half then put it on..you think it helps it being longer?

You shold keep it longer because if you dont the bass cant see the trailer as well. the whole point of a trailer is that the bass can see it.
