I have to get up to speed really fast on a project - I've got the BR-800 coming in on Fed Ex tomorrow and I've got just 4 days to record a jingle and deliver the CD for the big sales presentation. This tutorial was a BIG HELP and will same me a lot of time getting started with basic recording. I really appreciate your effort. Cheers - Bruce
Roland/BOSS has uploaded a new firmware update for the BR-800. The update will allow you to copy FX inserts, and perform advance track editing within the BR-800. Get it at Roland.com
I found out why the advanced track edit wasn’t included. Roland did a survey and most all users surveyed wanted even more editing than the BR-600 had, so they bundled SONAR-LE with the BR-800. The idea is to export the track(s) to SONAR and edit there. I never used the track edit in my BR-600. For example, If I was recording a bass line, and screwed up, I would go back and punch-in/out where needed.
Also, Most all my guitar solos are done in one take, maybe two, but I’ve gotten emails from users who record 4 or more solos using the V-Tracks and want to edit the solos as one track. This is easier in SONAR than In the recorder IMO.
Hi Tony. I noticed Boss has release a firmware for the BR-800. Just wondering if you have already tried it. Does it allow us to edit tracks after the update? What changes have they thrown in there. Couldn't seem to find any documentation on the changes.
Ok, I just looked on the Roland Japan site and see that the update fixes a 'USB storage' problem, this is the translation with Google. I went and install it, and checked the Track Edit, it has 'Move Track'. Was that there before? I never use the 'move track' freature.
Hi i just got the BR 800 but the disc was damaged , roland advised to download from their wesite , do i need to do this or can i just record my material straight to cd recorder,, thanks
Yes, you can record straight to the recorder with the software on the disc. You will need the driver software on Roland's site to be able to connect the BR-800 to a computer, but you won't have the SONAR LE DAW software. It's only on the disc.
Hi , i just got the BR-800,but the disc was damaged , is there anyway of getting a new disc ,roland advised me to download from their website,or can i just record my material straight to cd recorder without going through the computor programme
The ZOOM R24 is a pretty powerful recorder, and the BR-800 is for it's size. Both are loaded with great features, it really depends on the user. I find the BR-800 easier for noob recorders, than the R24.
@thouston0 Hi Tony, thanks for all of your tutorials here on YT. I just bought a Boss BR-800 but I'm struggling with Cakewalk LE and how both, software and hardware work together. Would it be possible to get any advise ?
I really haven't used the BR-800 with SONAR, only because I have a vintage single core AMD and SONAR crashed if I ran more than four tracks. But I have some understanding about how the BR-800 works with SONAR.
The first thing you have to do, is select 'Options' in SONAR's Toolbar, select Controller/Surfaces, and make sure that the BR is selected, and in Audio make sure that the BR is selcted there as well.
After recording tracks in the BR, and Exporting to your PC, you open SONAR, start a new project and load the exported tracks. Now if your config is correct, you use the BR as a interface controller for SONAR, meaning that when you move a fader on the BR, the corresponding fader should move on the screen.
And if your config is correct, you should be able to plug your guitar into the BR and record into SONAR with the BR being a audio interface. I know this sounds like a lot, but all DAW operate
@thouston0 Hi Tony, thanks a lot for your quick answer. It's very much appreciated. I'll try again with your tips and hope it'll work. Best regards, Carsten
In some ways the BR-800 is an improvement over the BR-600, but not necessary a replacement. I don't understand why the engineers didn't keep the more advanced track editing feature. I can guess that they thought users would use SONAR for advance editing.
Hi Tony. I read somewhere that you can't edit tracks from within the BR-800 menus. As in if you wanted to copy out a particular section of a recording and pasting/bouncing/mastering that to another track. Seems like you can only bounce/master the entire track. Can you find a workaround for this other than having to use the DAW?
@adineshd Wow, I just noticed that you can't really 'edit' a track, like on the BR-600, so yes, you would have to import the track into a DAW and edit it.
By the way, I finally got my BR-800. And besides the editing pain, I'm quite impressed with the unit. I only regret not getting the Foot Switch together witht he unit.
Thanks very much for taking the time to produce the videos - just watched them all. I have had a BR-800 for a few weeks, and having watched the videos, I know a lot more about it than I did!
Honestly, it's really to learn, you'll spend more time recording, than learning how to record.

Thanks for that. Yes I believe the move track was always there. Oh well... Guess we have to keep waiting for the elusive edit track function.

Thanks Tony. Hope they put that in a new firmware revision or something.
Too bad they don't sell the BR-600 anymore. Seems like the BR-600 is better in many ways to the BR-800. Any thoughts?
