The one thing I dont understand is why didnt they send out a scout plane or recon ship to help Yamato(outside of the idea it wasnt in the script)....Thats what I would have done....help guide Yamato....

Technically speaking, in the video sent by Starsha, Iscandar is shown to one of two binary planets, so it's not clear why the crew should surprised to find a binary planetary system even if they didn't know the other was Gamilon.
