My grandmother used to watch the show and she would say, "Yeah, they won the car but now they gotta pay the taxes on it!"......I think she was a little jealous.
@quirpco ok maybe i should have been a little bit more detailed it was when monti said look what she turned down and a new Cadillac appeared i would have punched him for that part
@beratio Only when the cars are beat up or poorly customized. Vintage Caddy owners who baby their cars and keep them original are first class all the way.
Why is it, with the exception of ONLY ONE guy, when the lady wins the Cadillac the man invariably grabs the woman and won't let her go? One man made ME want to kick him in the groin he held onto the lady so hard.
Wow - I want the blue cadillac for $9,000! What elegance and grace! Of course the average yearly wage was about $12,000 in 1971. That's about what my Dad was making. We just bought a 4 bedroom house in Orlando for $15,000! Wow how times have changed and not necessarily for the better!
This video montage is awesome! And I use to like watching this show when I was a kid. It's funny how people like to make fun of the 1970s and consider it tasteless and tacky. But for some strange reason, we all love the '70s and can't get enough of it. It doesn't matter if you're old enough to remember the '70s or were born years later, but I believe there will always be a soft spot in our hearts for this decade. There's something, cool, kooky and heart-warming about it.
@vidform Of course you will have a soft spot for those times , Think about your parents' love for the 50s! Our parents who loved the 70s make us cringe the same way. We don't understand it, but our kids will feel the exact way for our love of 'THE NINETIES'!
@Calliope334 It's true. I'm 33 and I'm nostalgic for the 90's cars. Of course back then, we still had stuff like Cadillac Fleetwoods, and Chevy Impalas with V8 engines, so it's kind of justified. All that went away after '96. I'm nostalgic as hell about the 50's even though I wasn't there.
Compare this to the reactions (almost disappointment!) in the import video when they show all the Datsuns. You just don't have that discrepancy in workmanship nowadays. These Caddies are fit for kings compared to the wretched tin box imports of the time. They may have cost a little more than double but were worth far more in my opinion!
The first black woman was hilarious. And wearing the Queen of Spades?! That sure doesn't seem too politically correct by today's standards, lol.
@MaestroTJS You're right! Back then, Cadillac was easily the equal of Rolls Royce and Bentley, in terms of luxury. Mercedes and Volvo may have had them beat in terms of safety and durability, but not by much. I'll go look at the Datsun 'winners' now...
If Jay Stewart were announcing today, he wuold introduce the Chevy Volt by saying, "And you can visit those Big Boy restaurants in this piece of sh!t."
back when cars were cars, men were men and women were women...now we have plastic cheapass cars and guys who want to be women and women who want to be men..lmao!!
@landyachtfan79 I love old cars, but I tend to disagree. A 2011 CTS is not much at all like a 2011 Impala. But put a 1973 de Ville next to a 1973 Caprice, and you'll find a lot more similarities. That gets worse in the later 1970s and into the 80s with all those cookie cutter C-platform cars. A 1977 Fleetwood is basically a Buick Electra or Oldsmobile 98 with different trim, grille and tail lights. And GM isn't alone - Lexus is just a Toyota, Infiniti is just a Nissan, Acura is just a Honda.
@nosuchpersonvideo For the most part, that is not true anymore. Most Lexus, Infiniti, and Acura models are not related to cheaper Toyotas, Nissans, and Hondas. That certainly was the case in the past but it's the exception now. Some of their cars are sold as Toyotas, Nissans, and Hondas in other markets, but that's not quite the same thing.
The domestics have mostly gotten away from badge engineering by dropping brands, but that's rather recent. A few still are, e.g., GMC and Chevy.
I distinctly remember as a kid that on one of these "Let's Make A Deal" the deal was TWO Cadillacs. It was the biggest deal I'd ever noticed. Seemed like it was around 1970-71. Maybe they didn't win them, since I don't see it here
This is back when people dreamed of owning a good old American made Cadillac. Now they dream of owning a Mercedes or Lexus. It's fricking ridiculous. It seems no one has pride in American industry anymore.
This is back when people dreamed of owning a good old American made Cadillac. Now they dream of owning a Mercedes or Lexus. It's fricking ridiculous. it seems no one has pride in American industry anymore.
@presidentbren True. but look at the Caddy´s back then and then look at the Mercedes from around that time. Now try do the same these days. Caddies from 1990´s to up until now were underpowered and made of plastic. But the times they are changing. And thank lord for that. But still a long way to go. the cadillac eldorado convertible has been one of my absolute favorite cars ever since i first saw one in a movie, i'm still very much after one of these, still a dream of mine to own and hopefully one day i will call one of them mine. greetings from germany.
Great vid! Takes me back! My Pop had a 1974 Caddy Sedan Deville! It was a boat but what a ride she was! BTW--why did "Price is right" gave away no sedans only Caddy coupes in this vid? Anyone know?
@franthree Good question. I would guess that the Coupe de Villes and Eldorados were considered the 'glamorous' Cadillacs and were great advertising. I agree about the 1974-76 Devilles being great looking cars-they certainly were impressive. I always thought a 1974-76 Deville would have made a GREAT looking convertible-better looking in some ways than the Eldorado of those years. My pristine 1975 Pontiac Grandville Convertible has a very similar front end to the '75 DeVille.
@TTibble What a dumb, racist comment. Plenty of people of all races get excited on game shows. Does it make you feel good to say such an obnoxious thing?
The Cadillac dealership that the game show bought all those Cadillacs is still in business. Casa de Cadillac in Sherman Oaks, CA. The building has even stayed the same over the years.
@JMMoosey ...and right next doer to Casa De Cadillac, if my memory (still, it's been since 1987 that I moved from The Valley to the Pacific Northwest) serves me right, there was Casa De Cascade, the car wash/detail center that was owned by Casa De Cadillac at the time. Is it still in business after all these 24 years since I moved to Washington State? I just wondered.
maaaaan thats clean white focks are like alright we won a cool car it's a caddy..the black focks ooahaaoaha my god and start freakn out like man i know it's a caddy but ah 4 get it act a fool i would. lol
Those are some sexy ass Lacs.Man I wish I could have any of those. These are the best lookin lac years in my opinion. Id take one and put candy paint, belts & buckles on trunk,84 swangas, pop trunk kit, neon & subs in the trunk!!
God... but them Cadillacs were biiiiiiig and so great. the people of those times lived and age of vehicle wonders. not only with Cadillacs, but with Buicks, Chevy's and Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles and Lincolns too ! :D
The first one is a 1971 Coupe DeVille, the second one is a 1975 Coupe DeVille, the third one is a 1972 Coupe DeVille, the fourth one is a 1974 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible, the fifth one is a 1972 Coupe DeVille, the sixth one is a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible, the seventh one is a 1974 Cadillac Eldorado, the eighth one is another 1974 Cadillac Eldorado, and the ninth one is a 1975 Coupe DeVille.
The '71-76 Cadillac were good looking BUT were not as well built as the previous generation of Caddys. The '71-76 were heavier and more complicated to build and the Eldorado convertible was a rattle trap compared to the '69-1970 de Ville convertible:)
@lasuvidaboy -Mega dittos man!-They were the best-lookin Caddys ever! Especially the 75-76 with the rectangular headlights! My pop had a 74 Caddy and did have some mechanical issues but not so bad! Still--he kept it 14 years and had 70 thou miles on it!
This was back when owning a Cadillac meant one had style, class, and wealth. Nowadays, they are just "pimped out" with the ridiculous looking wheels and absurdly loud sound belching out that disgusting obscene rap crap, and are usually owned by drug dealers. Unless they are the proverbial "little old lady" and that is usually the Coupe deVille.
@riceboy1701e i agree! back then you had to have the money to have one! now any jackass with a pulse can just go lease one for few hundred bucks a month!
@cepacol06 Me too. I remember when a Cadillac really meant something! I remember when a Cadillac really stood out. Nothing else looked like 'em, even though the Olds 98 and Toronado was marketed as more affordable close seconds.
Even Mercedes cars look cheap and generic, now. Thanks to robotic assembly lines, Just In Time supply, and economies of scale, there are only a small handful of platforms now. Albeit with hundreds of meaningless variations to give them brand distinction.
@cinerama62 Yep, the 500's were optional on the DeVilles and standard on the Eldorado. Both engines burned premium leaded, which was far higher in quality than the gasohol junk sold today. In 1973, all engines had their compressions dropped to reduce emissions and run well on regular gas. If I remember, the premium was around 40-45 cents a gallon. A pre-'72 Eldorado could hold its own against any muscle car of the day. A friend of my Dad's bought a 1970 Eldorado new. They were amazing cars
@InfiniteMushroom oh yea those early 472-500 ci 1968-71 had the most torque (375hp and over 500ft lbs) of torque, a stock production engine put out! they where just in a heavy car put that in midsize car and nothing stock would touch it!
@idfeekid Way back in the day (early 80's) when Car Craft was a real mechanic's car magazine (plain paper, not glossy), they featured a 1979 Cadillac Coupe DeVille sleeper with a 1970 500 c.i.d. engine and all of the tricks that could be done on those engines. With the biggest slicks that could be fitted inside the rear wheel wells (totally stock body sleeper), that Caddy could do 12.5 second quarter-milers. Yes, the A/C and power goodies worked. It was not stripped.
@InfiniteMushroom i like to check that out! i have an 81 coupe my dad bought it new,it has believe it or not a punny 4.1 v6 is in it! the body is sold since it been in the garge and no winters since 88! i allways wanted to put a early pre goverment regulations 472 in it just thought i have to change a bunch of things to do so! thought maybe a chevy 350 would be an easier swap but really wanted to keep it cadillac all the way!
@idfeekid You'll have to dig around for those old Car Craft magazines IF you can find them at all! The Cadillac story was not a full-on project but an article of somebody else's car.
The frame of your V6 DeVille can't handle the torque and weight of a pre-smog 472. What you can do, and keep the car Cadillac, is find one of those awful 6.0L V8-6-4 engines. Ditch the processor crap so it will run V8 the whole time. That is a proven fix. The V8 is heavier so get the springs from the donor car, too!
From $9000 back in the 70's to $60,000 today, And their smaller and ugly. Thanks MaccalsntD my great-grandfather had a 75 two-door coupe, red. Stayed in the family for 31 years.
I agree with Schizoid, I was excited when the new "LEt's MAke a Deal" was introduced, buth the way they do the BiG Deal is stupid, and the prize packages aren't nearly as good as they were in the old days.
A 1970s Cadillac also had plenty of power options Mercedes did'nt offer for another 10-years. The air conditioner in a 1970s Cadillac actually blew ice-cold air and lots of it. Mercedes (or any European car of that era) had terrible air conditioning.
Back then people thought we would have tourists on the moon in 1980s. Gas supply was endless. Now we realize that in the next 100 years, we wont be even able to fly, unless someone comes up with a good oil substitute. I like those cars.
I like those cars too. Especially the red Coupe deVille in the beginning. You can really see that fit and finish was beautifully done. I dare to say there was nothing comparable on the planet back then. I´ve been around these cars and their competitors. And back then, even a new Rolls or Mercedes would look and feel like a truck besides a Caddy. Inside AND out. Especially the 75 and 76 modelyears. In europe we really did admire those cars for their quality and unique style. Believe it or not :)
Gas supply was endless? ummm...no. brush up on the 70s embargo because we resupplied the Israelis. The second gas crisis wasnt until 79, so it doesnt really apply to these people considering that this is early 70s. But nevertheless, americans knew that they were kept on a short fuel leash. Business and Economics major FTW.
I'll take the $12,900 red Eldorado convertible @3:30, and take a nice long road trip across the U.S. of A. on the Lincoln Highway. Yes, driving a Cadillac on the Lincoln suits me just fine, thank you.
ooooo, A/C and what? A stereo? all for 10 grand? (sarcasm added).. I like those 2 door Caddy's at the end- sweet. Some idiot prolly traded one in on the cash for clunkers program.
Those full-sized Cadillacs were common in the States in the 1970s. They were no bigger than other full-size GM, Ford or Chrysler cars of the era. There were plenty of parking spaces as cities like L.A. were much smaller in those days and gas was CHEAP!
Having checked out the two I'll take the Lincoln. It's the closest thing to a REAL car that is still made besides the Grand Marquis. Hey there's nothing wrong or old about body on frame. It's just the way cars are made, jeez. The BMW looks like the usual overpriced bland Eurocrap Yawn. In reality I would buy neither. I would be out getting real luxury cars like the Cadillacs in this vid. "Progress" has a way eventually sqeezing the life and soul out of just about anything.

I was crying for the lady @ 3:35 who was crying and said she had no car and she was looking so hard for one.
oooowwwwdddd 1 year ago
The '71-76 Cadillac were good looking BUT were not as well built as the previous generation of Caddys. The '71-76 were heavier and more complicated to build and the Eldorado convertible was a rattle trap compared to the '69-1970 de Ville convertible:)
lasuvidaboy 1 year ago
@lasuvidaboy -Mega dittos man!-They were the best-lookin Caddys ever! Especially the 75-76 with the rectangular headlights! My pop had a 74 Caddy and did have some mechanical issues but not so bad! Still--he kept it 14 years and had 70 thou miles on it!
franthree 1 year ago
Those 1975 and 1976 Coupe' Devilles are the BEST looking Caddys EVER.
TheLizardKing1967 1 year ago
This was back when owning a Cadillac meant one had style, class, and wealth. Nowadays, they are just "pimped out" with the ridiculous looking wheels and absurdly loud sound belching out that disgusting obscene rap crap, and are usually owned by drug dealers. Unless they are the proverbial "little old lady" and that is usually the Coupe deVille.
riceboy1701e 1 year ago
@riceboy1701e i agree! back then you had to have the money to have one! now any jackass with a pulse can just go lease one for few hundred bucks a month!

i love classic cadillac, those days, every american made car had its own identity. Not todays, all look generic of asian cars.
cepacol06 1 year ago
@cepacol06 Me too. I remember when a Cadillac really meant something! I remember when a Cadillac really stood out. Nothing else looked like 'em, even though the Olds 98 and Toronado was marketed as more affordable close seconds.
Even Mercedes cars look cheap and generic, now. Thanks to robotic assembly lines, Just In Time supply, and economies of scale, there are only a small handful of platforms now. Albeit with hundreds of meaningless variations to give them brand distinction.

They gave Cadillacs away like water...

Did'nt Cadillac make a 500ci. engine? What the hell gas was .25 to .30 cents a gallon back in the early 70's.
cinerama62 1 year ago
@cinerama62 Yep, the 500's were optional on the DeVilles and standard on the Eldorado. Both engines burned premium leaded, which was far higher in quality than the gasohol junk sold today. In 1973, all engines had their compressions dropped to reduce emissions and run well on regular gas. If I remember, the premium was around 40-45 cents a gallon. A pre-'72 Eldorado could hold its own against any muscle car of the day. A friend of my Dad's bought a 1970 Eldorado new. They were amazing cars
InfiniteMushroom 1 year ago
@InfiniteMushroom I thought so, thanks.
cinerama62 1 year ago
@InfiniteMushroom oh yea those early 472-500 ci 1968-71 had the most torque (375hp and over 500ft lbs) of torque, a stock production engine put out! they where just in a heavy car put that in midsize car and nothing stock would touch it!
idfeekid 1 year ago
@idfeekid Way back in the day (early 80's) when Car Craft was a real mechanic's car magazine (plain paper, not glossy), they featured a 1979 Cadillac Coupe DeVille sleeper with a 1970 500 c.i.d. engine and all of the tricks that could be done on those engines. With the biggest slicks that could be fitted inside the rear wheel wells (totally stock body sleeper), that Caddy could do 12.5 second quarter-milers. Yes, the A/C and power goodies worked. It was not stripped.
InfiniteMushroom 1 year ago
@InfiniteMushroom i like to check that out! i have an 81 coupe my dad bought it new,it has believe it or not a punny 4.1 v6 is in it! the body is sold since it been in the garge and no winters since 88! i allways wanted to put a early pre goverment regulations 472 in it just thought i have to change a bunch of things to do so! thought maybe a chevy 350 would be an easier swap but really wanted to keep it cadillac all the way!
idfeekid 1 year ago
@idfeekid You'll have to dig around for those old Car Craft magazines IF you can find them at all! The Cadillac story was not a full-on project but an article of somebody else's car.
The frame of your V6 DeVille can't handle the torque and weight of a pre-smog 472. What you can do, and keep the car Cadillac, is find one of those awful 6.0L V8-6-4 engines. Ditch the processor crap so it will run V8 the whole time. That is a proven fix. The V8 is heavier so get the springs from the donor car, too!
InfiniteMushroom 1 year ago
@idfeekid you could put the honda engine in it when you go to chicago or florida.

I agree with Schizoid, I was excited when the new "LEt's MAke a Deal" was introduced, buth the way they do the BiG Deal is stupid, and the prize packages aren't nearly as good as they were in the old days.

Air condition WAS optional but the majority of Cadillac customers requested it.
eblackadder3 2 years ago
This is the way Let's Make A Deal should be! Big luxurious cars and 2 (TWO!) contestants for the big deal. Life was good back then.
SchizoidMan100 2 years ago
A 1970s Cadillac also had plenty of power options Mercedes did'nt offer for another 10-years. The air conditioner in a 1970s Cadillac actually blew ice-cold air and lots of it. Mercedes (or any European car of that era) had terrible air conditioning.

Back then people thought we would have tourists on the moon in 1980s. Gas supply was endless. Now we realize that in the next 100 years, we wont be even able to fly, unless someone comes up with a good oil substitute. I like those cars.
83ls 2 years ago
I like those cars too. Especially the red Coupe deVille in the beginning. You can really see that fit and finish was beautifully done. I dare to say there was nothing comparable on the planet back then. I´ve been around these cars and their competitors. And back then, even a new Rolls or Mercedes would look and feel like a truck besides a Caddy. Inside AND out. Especially the 75 and 76 modelyears. In europe we really did admire those cars for their quality and unique style. Believe it or not :)

@ mochironnn i got me a 75 couple deville its black and its AMAZING!
grahambbbbbbb 2 years ago
Gas supply was endless? ummm...no. brush up on the 70s embargo because we resupplied the Israelis. The second gas crisis wasnt until 79, so it doesnt really apply to these people considering that this is early 70s. But nevertheless, americans knew that they were kept on a short fuel leash. Business and Economics major FTW.
