50's? Try well into the 70's and maybe even the 80's. Talk about the tragic destruction of the social fabric of a nation. Sharpeville and Sofiatown are just two names that haunt the past of South Africa. A large part of the problems in SA can be traced back to the racist abusive Nat government that had SA under their boot-heel for over 40 years. And De Beers, Anglo American, England and America share the blame for the mess - though you wouldn't think so from hearing them preach so long after
@freek77 Still interested in the lyrics? "Hulle vra vir ons waar is jou dompas?" "Gaan julle slaap, wat soek julle hierso?" This song is prob not what you think. In the 50' in SA, when moving through whites areas, black people had to carry a "pass" called a "dompas". Failing to do so could get you taken to the police station, in a police van. These police vans were nicknamed "Kwela". So she opens the song with a cry for help to her mother: "Kwela kwela, kwela kwela mama". Re-look the vid now.
@stofpoeper Thanx! I allready found out it had something to do with the apartheid regime, and now I understand the rest of the lyrics too (the ones in Afrikaans). It's a very sad history and I really listen to this song differently now. It's a big contrast between the tragic topic and the (almost happy) music...
wow what a beautiful song and such a beautiful woman with a wonderful voice. this s all new to me and I enjoyed it very much ,thanks for posting this mate!
plz I need your help.I have been looking for some musicians name in SA.They sing in a group two.One is tall and the other is short. The short one is the lead soloist & he always carries a guitar to sing along. There is a song that they have sang about a man who leaves his wife and then immidiatly she goes sleeping around with other men
By the way, that older fellow singing,he seems familiar, but I cannot place the name, anyone know? His look of defiance at 2:19 is worth a thousand words!

Yes,the old school pennywhistle Kwela is rare, and often doesn't exist outside the realm of vinyl records, which are tricky to translate into the youtube world. I feel your craving of the old stuff, but this is a very honorable tribute to the old style(without the pennywhistle,unfortunately)...
its Afrikaans but just a phoney Afrikaans. some of the song is in Afrikaans mocking the police etc. the whole song is about a police raid in the township, and 'kwela kwela' is both what people shouted as a warning that the police were here, well township people, and what the police van was nicknamed. sorry no one likes a smartass..
Umm... if you didn't notice that it's mostly Zulu with some Afrikaans, then you're not South African, so don't make comments about what you don't know.
A friend of mine worked on a radio station in SA in the late 50s. He brought back a stack of 78s. Loved the beat and the slightly out of tune brass. Fantastic music - the real stuff. I put loads on reel-to-reel but sadly lost them years ago. If anyone out there has a disc, please post it. It's better than reggae.
This is the beauty of people who express themselves through music, even when they pass from this world, their voice lives on FOREVER. A musician never dies...

Does anyone have the lyrics? I'm Dutch and try to pick up the parts in Afrikaans (very similar to Dutch) but it's sometimes hard to know if I'm right.
Love the music! Brings back memories from my time in SA. Sadly, this album is not for sale in Europe, so had to order it from SA.

Why is this the only Kwela vido on youtube? So sad,is this mighty style really that dead,in place of bad attempts at American style rap music???
