  • @xTalentHD any 5mw will travel well and is safe. I like the green laser for visibility and get one with a adjustable lens. You can focus even the low power 5mw lasers at about any distance.

  • @Klimerts Cheapest way - buy somewhere stolen DVD-R drive , get from there laser diod , buy driver and optics module , and woila - 300 mW 650 nm burning laser in your pocket for only 30$(7$ for driver , 10$ for optics , and 13$ for optical drive) .

    There is no lamers , end even if some one is lamer , he has a bunch of friends-nerds that can help him with computer problems . So no one throws away any devices , and even if they are broken at all , they'll storage it as bright part of their life in the nearest closet .

    Also , from DVD-Roms you only can get 650 nm , maximum with 400 mWatt beam laser diods . Toy for 10-year kids .

  • @jpeel132 Actually it does make sense. A green laser(diode pumped solid state) uses an 808nm IR diode. Pumps the laser through a crystal that changes the wavelength to 1064nm then through another crystal that changes the wavelength to 532nm. In that process, there is a tun of IR radiation mixed in with the beam. A real true green laser has an IR filter that dumbs most of the IR radiation so you get almost all 532nm. Unfortunately the ebay lasers do not have those IR filters.

  • @jpeel132 Think of it like this...If you take the IR lens off of a true 100mw laser, you will end up with a 200mw ebay quality laser. So...your laser is not 100mw of green. Most of what is burning is the IR radiation which scatters and totally eats away at your retina long term. If you were to hold a true 100mw green laser next to your 100mw ebay laser, the beam and dot would not be nearly as bright.

  • a burning laser is still a lightwave which means it still travels at the speed of light. having said that if it reflects off of something (like a mirror) and hits you in the eye it will burn your retna and blind you at the speed of light, and the damage is irreversible.therefore why would anyone play around with this. I haven't seen a single youtube video yet that posted safety precautions when playing around with burning lasers. just because you can doesn't necessarilly mean you should.

  • it would have to reflect off of a perfect mirror. most of the time the lasers are burning things, they are focused into a little dot, therefore if reflecting off of a surface, the beam would be highly out of focus where your eye is

  • You will never be able to buy a good 100 mW laser for under 50 bucks.

    Heres what you can do though.

    Buy a 5 mW green, prices ranging 15 to 75 dollars, and pot mod it.

    You MIGHT break your laser in the process, or you MIGHT make it all IR light be screwing up NM wave length, but it will become a burning laser if done right (all the extra energy is IR light, DONT LOOK INTO IT, you will get blinded).

    This WILL shorten diode life, breaking laser after a while. But for under 50 bucks burning lase

    get ahold of a 16x dvd burner for a red diode, ebay sells these alot, you can also ask neighbors throwing out old computers.

    OR

    buy a hd/dvd xbox360 for 20-30 bucks from ebay, or just the rail for 16, OR just the blue diode for 16. This make a burning blue laser.

    assemble everything and your set.

  • I am working on building an ultraviolet TEA nitrogen pulse laser right now. if it works properly, output should be around 100,000 watts.

  • It basically uses a flyback transformer from an old TV to raise 12 volts from a pair of lantern batteries to 10 kilovolts. The electricity charges low-inductance plate capacitors which release energy very fast, creating a nanosecond in which electricity arcs between two parallel electrodes, actually causing the nitrogen in the air to lase. The laser will be at a wavelength of 337nm, beyond what the human eye can see. Not great for burning cuz very short pulses.

  • thatll burn like crazy. i have a 405nm laser at approx 10mW and it will sting the skin if focused properly. that short wavelength tears through material a lot easier, and with the power you are hoping for, itll have no problem tearing through a cardboard box, regardless of being a .1 second burst

  • unless you are 600mw+ you will always need weight, or else it will just boil the tape in stead of straight up cutting it

  • To give you the basic idea, the one you bought from radio shack is probably 5mw. You need a laser with like 100 mw to cut/burn things.

  • yes. you would need easily excess of 600mW to cut it with no weight. otherwise the laser just boils/melts the tape as if its just a slab of rubber
