Dont forget taht Mark actually got a great senc eof humor. This song was written by mark, during touring Germany in the late 70'is and early 80'is. He had been watching these guys on the discos in Germany at that time with their letaher caps and this attitude that was trendy i for some people at that time.
Mark is not gay, he's married for the second or third time and he has 3 or 4 kids as I remember.
I've been listening to this album since it's release (lived in the UK from '81-'85). I consider this song one of the "sweet spots" of that album.
I was about 13 yrs old when I first heard this song; as a hetero, I would give it credit as one of the influences that enabled me to be comfortable with embracing and supporting gay pride.
If you're looking for ethnocentricity and division, you came to the wrong place.
if you listen to any of mark knopflers lyrics he usually gets into a character and tells the story from somebody else's perspective. i doubt hes homophobic himself. is the parody here not gays but those who have this stereotypical view of them?
@minimacas "is the parody here not gays but those who have this stereotypical view of them?"
Well, those who don't see people but just emblematic groups miss the point. The song is a satiric but humorous and sympathetic comment on specific people who are deep under several layers of pretending: Les Boys are a not-ready-for-prime-time cabaret troupe with big dreams, who dress up in macho regalia, and of course, are doing the pretending that is at the core of homosexuality.
So you think this song is offensive to homosexuals who like to dress up in Nazi uniforms and like S and M..ahem..that is sado macho-toty-penis-tic sex? Moreover it could be offensive to gay guys driving the Mercedes Benz? Since when was ART supposed to be PC?
If one thing is true about Knopfler it is his integrity. The lyrics of this song like all his others open the mind.
Fine by me too. Sure it's unusual and not actually PC these days to parody tha' little faggot with the earring and the make-up. And to nazify him at that. But what is Jonathan Littell doing anyway? Now, the making movies album's still a crusher, and this song's just a cute last piece on it
i love how he just says what he wants in his songs.
