to all posts regarding this time period. You are 100% correct. the 80s were great. Just a fun simpler time. MTV was great back then. Don't know what happened. Maybe we just got older or maybe MTV just lost its way ( I think the latter). Merrry Christmas to all 80s kids.
By sheer force of will, I make myself not listen to this all year so I can treat myself with it during the holidays. Never fails to improve my mood and make me want to get up and dance around the house. LOVE this, thank you, thank you. :)
@Msknowmar Alan was at MTV, but in his earlier days, the brass hadn't quite decided whether or not to keep him on. Then they discovered how much appeal he had to teenaged girls :)
When MTV was MTV. It went down the crapper when they started to get rid of Martha Quinn, Nina Blackwood and Mark Goodman. The original "Vjays". That stands for video jays for you young kids out there born after the 80's.
I remember seeing that video with Billy when it originally aired. Still one of my favorite Christmas songs.
Love how the camera man gets into the fun at 2:21. Everyone is right when they say MTV was all about music videos and having fun in 1981. So much has changed since then and today it would probably be a rap or hip hop group covering this song and extra security on hand to make sure everyone keeps their guns away and violence to a minimum.
Good Lord, I can't believe this song is now 30 years old...I was only 9 when this came out, but remember it quite vividly! I'd LOVE to see MTV like this again, when the V J's were actually V J's mixed with great videos, & not a Reality TV freak show like it is now! Ever since the Real World kicked off in 1991 or so, t hat's when it went downhill! All we can do is hold onto the memories of when life was simpler, that's why MTV stands out more then than it does now! Happy Holidays ;)
@Lu70sChild80sFan You're right,it is hard to believe this was 30 years ago.Times were so much better then and as with MTV,everything else has pretty much gone to shit.At least we still have our memories...
Love this song and video. Was looking at the date - 1981!! Wow that was an awesome time for many of us. Lifed seemed a little simpler then. This is when MTV was MTV. look at the fun all the VJs are having. Great time!
what happened to the version with the anime from last year? For god sakes thats all I wanted to see. I haven't seen it since last year. Who ever has it - please put it back on now.
What the hell happened was all these stupid like jersey shore and the kardashians, and the big race and all that crap and lots of sex and they just did away with the music.
Wow! Excellent! I've never seen this before, as I'm in Canada, and until recently, we only had Muchmusic, not MTV. This is my favorite Christmas song ever. The only song I ever played on my cable access show Hard Rock Heroes TWICE. (For the Christmas shows in 1991 and 1992.)
Does anyone remember when MTV had no commercials? That is the problem. MTV got popular and started making money. Found that the shows made more advertising revenue than the videos...and we lost a fun resource.
Also, in the 80's, there were still independent radio stations that didn't play just the hits (like today). We have lost a lot because the music business realized it could make more money than it did before.
This is when MTV was good..It started to suck around 87..Now it totally BLOWS ASS..Nothing but stupid shows ..Do they even play vids anymore I wont even turn it on..
Billy Squier is definitely one of the most underreated artists of all time. This is by and far one of the best rock and roll christmas songs out there and definitely deserves more airplay.
@drugssuck1991 billy squier was huge for a few years. then i guess after the video rock me tonight, it hurt his career. stupid if you ask me, there aren't many solo artists that rock like him except for maybe sammy hagar, but i don't like sammy, i prefer billy squier. hell, if van halen had replaced David Lee Roth with Billy Squier instead of Sammy Hagar that would have been a frickin killer group !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the kind of fun we used to have when people weren't seriously addicted to drugs. I miss those days.... This brings back so many good memories. It is my favorite Christmas song and mainly because of this video. I watched the premiere of MTV. I was 14. Where have the REAL VJs gone?!!!
this a such a GREAT CHRISTMAS song to feel the joy of the holidays. YES, IT IS SCRIPTED AND CANNED BUT LET THE EMOTIONS and joy that make the holiday celebrations so joyful!. Hold someone special to you tightly, think of the holiday spirits; and enjoy the sentiments (that everyone should know!). Happy Christmas to all out in You Tube land!
I think that the 90's happened....people forgot what real fun and the holidays were all about...lets just be happy that there still those us that love that time and the great holiday videos!!!
@MISisback MTV decdided to get all political (left wing) and to go with crappy reality TV shows. That's why MTV sucks now. It just isn't what it used to be.
@MISisback Well said my friend. God I miss these days. Who would of thought that 30 years later, yes 30 years later, MTV would end up being what it is today. It went from Music Television to MINDLESS Television. You're right, What happened? RIP JJ Jackson.
This song gets my holiday spirit flowing-full of energy and joy. It may be lip-synched and staged, but it is still fun and joyful. And after all, isn't that the feelings we look for during the holidays??
I was ten years old then. age 39 now, and have to agree..There is no MTV of the past, no longer exists. We have only pre manufactured, "pop idols", that are stamped out in a factory like setting. Love this vid though. Hard to believe that all of them are now in their 50s now.
looooovvvveeee this song and this video....... billy squier, never ever has gotten the credit he deserves...... i wish mtv still had videos and the vj's!!!!
This really takes me back...to the days when MTV was about music! I would come home from school & watch videos almost every day. Usually stayed up late on weekends watching MTV with friends.
He's lipsynching to the studio version in the video. The MTV people's natural live sound is on top of the song being played on the monitor that's he's lipsynching along with. That's why there's no drummer or bass player there when you can clearly hear bass and drums on the track.
I heard the studio version on the radio today. Its probably available on some Christmas compilation, or maybe on iTunes, but I haven't looked.
read billy squiers webpage now before it changes after xmas
it was on a 45 rpm but that version was done live in studio A with "Background vocals were produced during my August '81 Christmas party at Power Station, NYC. We invited numerous dignitaries from around the country, many from rock radio, as well as press and record company personnel who'd contributed in one way or another to the success of DSN. ..."
sure, I was shocked myself. It sure isn't like it used to be on MTV.

Who remembers MTV havings ads that mocked all stations with shows and talk. MTV - music and m\nothing but music 24 hours a day
That's what they bragged about and thats what they did.
In time that's what they didn't do.
