"...mirar a la vida en la cara, siempre, mirar a la vida en la cara, y conocerla, por lo que es. Al fin, conocerla. Amarla, por lo que es y después, ponerla en su lugar. Leonard, siempre los años entre nosotros, siempre los años, siempre el amor, siempre ...las horas.
Years from now people will look back at this film and realize it's a manipulative, pretentious bit of clap trap. These days everyone whispers reverently," it's supposed to be about Virginia Woolf, it's high art"! Ed Harris is miscast as a grotesque AIDS patient whom goes looney and throws himself out a window so the audience can feed on the tragedy and Meryl Streep also does an unconvincing gay character while Nicole Kidman french kisses her older Sister for a lesson in incest and weirdness .
i cannot believe someone actually uploaded my favorite part of the movie...when i watched the dvd i must have repeated this scene 25 times! now i can add it to my favs! thanks sooo much! i love this!
Did Nicole Kidman deserve the roll of Virginia Woolf ? Does the former wife of Tom Cruise and queen of the tabloids do much reading between visits to the plastic surgeon? She's much too pretty and superficial to realistically portray Mrs Woolf and the voice is all wrong. If Nicole had lived back then I doubt she would of shared in the same sphere of friends or intellect, a Bloomsbury candidate she's not.
The only valid arguement you have is regarding the voice that Nicole uses, but she has already stated that she didn't want to mimic Virginia's voice, as it would be seen as commical to modern viewers...so you honestly have not arguement. :)
I watched this film uncountable times and adore it.. I could watch it again and again, every part of it is relevant to life... and the music is just amazingly beautiful.... I love it...
@TheInpherus You're very welcome! ------------------------I can recommend two of my favorite movies, that like 'The Hours' are UNIQUE-----"The Piano" (with Holly Hunter) and "Atonement" (with Keira Knightley)--two incredible movies that are difficult to shake off the psyche...
I truly love this film - not in the sense of it being a film that I, for the sake of reasoning, necessarily enjoy to watch - but it is just so thought-provoking and moving; like Virginia's work. The first time I watched this film, I was expecting some kind of biopic that would end up falling down at the first hurdle - my expectation of a Virginia Woolf biography - as I hadn't read Cunningham's book then. I was sat dumbfounded for days afterwards trying to absorb everything from the film!
When I watched this movie for the first time, I got confused, Virginia is the Writer, Laura is the Reader and Clarissa is the Character. So Virginia wrote a book about Clarissa's life and Laura read the book in the 1950's and Richard wrote a book about his mother, Laura...right...?
@andrewdisney1 'The Hours' was the working title of the book 'Mrs. Dalloway', written by Virginia Wolf. 'The Hours' is also the title of the book from which this film was made. The Hours' narrative was inspired by the book 'Mrs. Dalloway'. The first name of Mrs. Dalloway in the book Mrs. Dalloway is Clarissa. Clarissa, played by Meryl Streep, plays out events like shopping for flowers and others things which reflect events of Mrs. Dalloway in the book of the same name. Mail if want to know more.
la mejor pelicula que he visto en mi vida,la unica pelicula, que a uno le remarca el hecho de la finitud de la existencia y que la vida debe ser vivida a intensidad en 1 solo día
One of the best films ever made. One of the few that makes you really think about life. And this movie has possibly the best score for any film ever made.
I remember seeing this film in the cinema when it was released in 2002. I had never had an experience like it, nor another one since. The movie was so captivating at all levels (the words, music, imagery) that it was as if the entire thing took place in one long breath. I also distinctly remember that as the credits rolled, nobody moved or spoke for what seemed like forever, as if too stunned or disoriented to return to 'reality'. A truly great film.
Somettimes you get so much built up resistance in life that it is known by the whole of you, that the only way to release it and be free is to withdraw yourself from the physical altogether.
hello...every one...i saw this movie many times...simply because it impressed me soo much....every thing in this movie was perfect....not in the classic way....it shows the truth which we denide.....the life's nature......it's a fabioulous work...the script was perfectly prepared.......one of my favourite.movies in all the times......hanks...
@MrGalo7338 ,,It is truly brillliant.. I love so much but love it when Meryl lays back on the bed with her daughter and says "when were you truly happy?" she says something about thinking this is the feeling of "happiness" and it was the start of happiness and it would always be like that..... but it was that moment , that very moment...that was happiness........ I think that sums up totally how I feel about that. Thanks for your reply x
Why is it that films that lean towards womens lives rarely find the acclaim so richly deserved. Most people havent heard of this film, but they all know of the Godfather!
With the arrival of this film we say WE ARE HERE! ..........Always!
Perhaps the calmness comes because she knows she is finally going to be released from life's torture. Watch this film - It is brilliant . I've watched it at least 4 times.
The other suicide to watch is Gillian Anderson in "The House of Mirth".
Le vrai défi je crois, c'est d'aimer la vie. Si l'existence n'a pas de sens, le suicide n'en a pas non plus. La poésie c'est un art de vivre, mourir c'est bien trop simple.
This is the most powerful ending to any film i think i've ever seen. The combination of music, the words spoken and the image of Virginia wading into the water.
yes...She drown herself in a similar way... The body was found several days after, with stones into her pockets... Was the obvious end of thediscending parabole of her life... She embodied the feelings of an era... She couldn't bear the weight of her sensitivity
This scene moves me to tears every time - the most bittersweet ending one can think of. Virginia Woolf's words have a special place in my heart - because of her I have the courage to look life in the face.
They got the title for this from Virginia's diary- she was originally going to call Mrs. Dalloway The Hours and referred to her working manuscript by that title..."to look life in the face..always to look life in the face..to know it for what it is..at last to know it, to love it for what it is..and then..to put it away"... oh how I love Virginia Woolf.. I don't think anyone will ever grasp how talented she truly was..
sadness can be asthetic.movie depicts silent storm tht sum of us carry in our hearts.every heart beat infuses a surge of futilty of our existence.the only significant thing seemingly is the eventual emanicipation 4m life
Virginia Wolfe ended her life the only way she could. She had come to accept life in it's most daunting and beautiful terms and knew that a woman in her circumstances at that moment in time could not exist.
The main characters in this movie are making decisions that just show their suffering and despair. Like noone can really ease your pain. It's very depressing on one hand but on the other hand you can find understanding in this film.
Philip Glass is a genius, the music was superb! the imagery of her head above water has stayed with me long after my first viewing. Haunting, yet beautiful.
To look life in the face, always, to look life in the face, and to know it for what it is at last, to know it to love it for what it is, and then to put it away " Words do not exist to be able to explain what I feel whenever I watch this film

Philip Glass is a genius, the music was superb! the imagery of her head above water has stayed with me long after my first viewing. Haunting, yet beautiful.
