  • electrode carbon nano tubes can be purchased at cheap tubes.com if anyone wants to try this at home. cheers great vid

  • does it work with normal printing ink?

  • paper thin screens

    paper thin batteries

    carbon fiber enclosure...

4mm thin smartphones are in the near future :)

  • nice! very informative!

  • very useful,,thanks for the lecture

  • This is very useful. Another alternative source of energy.

  • your best bet come up with a simple design everyone can use. they say saliva is an excellent electrolyte or so ive heard.

  • where to get this "carbon nanotubes and silver nanowires" from ?

  • I have been seeing this proposed for about 4 years now but no word on when it actually becomes a reality. I am wondering what the obstacles are that need to be overcome.

  • He said the white people. lol

  • Off topic: the clearest word he said was fluctuation... Vs oven, which may have been the worst lol

  • i do believe people i've seen videos of normal people making carbon nanotubes. the video i think is really just showing us the potential if we invest time to understand. we are a "now" nation. but we really should slow down a bit and take a look at the alternatives staring us in the face.

  • that waws the mowst annowing woice ewer

  • @hobatu I don't think he was saying it's supposed to be used for powerplants. These paper batteries, like most novel inventions, have a specific and narrow market where it's most convenient. And in the not too distant future, nanotubes, and diamonds for that matter, will be as cheap as asphalt.

  • too bad it only last about 5 sec

  • How does spraying paper and baking it in an oven create a potential difference or electro-motive force? Where does the charge come from and how is it dissipated? The LED was not being lit by the paper that came out of the oven, it was being lit by crocodile clips held on a piece of tin foil with PP3/AA cells underneath for all we know :P I suggest fitting hydro-electric water-wheels to our W/Cs (toilets) to create energy from our waste shit and piss with each flush ;) Do I get a peace prize now?

  • @redmistpete you have to charge it.

  • Thanks for explaining 565 - So it's NOT an instant battery then, as per the video title. In fact nothing new at all really; in fact very similar to a capacitor, which is also made of paper and metal and is used to "store" an electrical charge. Why did I get a thumbs-down for my water-wheel idea? It far surpasses this "invention". *note - sarcasm ;)

  • The paper soaked with carbon nanotubes and/or silver nano-wires(curiously omitted in this video) is just a highly porous conductor. It is not itself a battery or a capacitor.

Capacitors made from the material have a specific energy of 7.5 Wh/kg. That's pretty good for a capacitor, but even a humble lead acid battery gets ~30-40 Wh/kg.

The abstract doesn't give any info on what battery chemistries they've used or specific energy they've achieved.

  • Ah. Oh well - good research. Might have some good uses in the future.

  • miauu ist nice, wenn de singel bist FrauenMeister . com dort wird dir geholfen

  • @hobatu: Spot on questions that I'd like to hear answered.

  • Solar paint is the way...

  • Line the walls of vehicles to add to their electrical power.

  • i thought carbon nanotubes ran at hundreds of dollars per gram

  • Normally the Stamp costs lots of money to make but once the stamp is created you can mass produce as much as you'd like for dirt cheap.

  • burned wood or coal can have buckyballs and nanotubes in it i thought. the ash is the way to go, probably just liquify it and put it on paper is the cheapest way. i definalty know there are bucky balls in the ashes. i also made wireless power, why we need batteries then? i show it on my youtube if you are interested.

  • No way. Too little, too poor quality and almost impossible to sort.

Single walled carbon nanotubes cost in the range of hundreds of dollars per gram, this is down from tens of thousands of dollars per gram just a few years ago.

  • @boxa888 That's actually really cool, wireless power?

  • @Welcometotheworld1 yea i sent wireless power 20ft so far, the real model can send power miles and then be recieved, almost like radio, but the power is capable of running industrial motors. i show how it works on my youtube so people can learn, thanks friend, its really 100 yrs old, the man who created wireless power is nikola tesla, research him, you will be amazed by his scientific contributions.

  • @boxa888 Tesla was a great man who discovered many important things about how to manipulate electricity, but transferring power over a long distance is really pointless especially if anyone can dial in to that energy. Maybe one day when energy becomes as free as air it will come in handy, but what's the point in your transmitters?

  • @DeimosSaturn WAT is pointless about energy freedom? that was teslas point from the start, i have proven the same principles and have given the information freely to further stop the supression of important technology like the tesla transmitters. they are the future, unless we develop moveable power units on the basis of free energy. we should start soon before they let another rig pump into the oceans, that is why the tesla technology is so important as well, presevation of the earth

  • @boxa888 There is no "suppression" of this technology going on, the point you missed that I made was that you can't profit in any way off of implementing the technology other than as a curious novelty. If this technology were implemented by power companies, people would just steal electricity and there would be no way to stop them.

  • @DeimosSaturn there most certainly was suppression before the internet, no old people know of tesla, thats how suppression works in plain sight. why are u so against energy freedom? with digital its possible to secure energy as a binary stream that would have to line up to the coils resoannt frequencies, so it is possible to secure subscribers, but univese secures freedom, and that is the point of such a device is energy freedom for all, it would clean up most of the shit humanity has to face

  • @boxa888 "Why are u so against energy freedom?" *face palm*

Why are you so against grape jelly on hot dogs?

"with digital its possible to secure energy as a binary stream that would have to line up to the coils resoannt frequencies"

Yes and if we decouple the isotronic matrix we can reverse the polarity on the quantum impulse capacitor.

  • @DeimosSaturn He's american, he doesn't know better.

So go easy on him okay? :D

  • @boxa888 Tesla was a genius, I wish schools taught more about him!

  • Lighter, more environmentally friendly, powerful...what more could we want in a battery.

    Low price I guess.

    Great job. Love the enthusiasm.

  • these are all good questions.

  • too bad nanotubes never decompose and their effects on the human body r tremendously bad

we still need more time to test biocompatability guys

  • paper is not light

  • light is not paper

  • paper is much lighter than lead in lead-acid batteries.

  • asdasd

  • I wonder what the lifespan of the battery is... how soon does the power degrade and are these rechargeable? - Other than that - brilliant.

  • waist of nano stuff will eventually end up in plants, animals and in our own bodies. With what effect... no one talks about it, no one knows....

  • since they're nano, they build up really slow

  • i wish they would put some nano stuff in me to enhance me, i would volunteer first in line.

  • look up: morgellons desease, that's nano stuff

  • @peterscoop HAHAHA

  • Leute sucht mal nach "350 EIER AM TAG" ... hab damit grad ganz schnell 600 Euronen gewonnen! ;-)

  • super capacitors last longer much cheaper more abudant materials are always rechargeble charge/discharge almost instantly store as much or more energy depends on the surface area more is better

  • I like this video. whatever has to do with science is okay!

  • the intro video is awesome. how did they do this? lots of frames stitched together maybe?

  • How long this alpha based prototype battery last?

Where could I obtain the nanotube infused ink to conduct experiment myself? Thanks

  • I would try the nanotube shop, failing that try nanotube express, it's 3rd on the left lol. Anyway, maybe mix carbon dust with a suspension and paint on. stick in the oven and see if it works... who knows!

  • Could this be used like a solar panel?

  • is this rechargeable?

  • Yes.

  • How about using this product as a building material?

eg, resin-impregnated to make sheets/tube...walls/panels, bike frames etc.

    Moldable, presumably?

  • This is great!

However, it doesnt make energy, it only stores it.

Imagine having buckets that hold water, but no water.

  • Hang on, I'm trying to wrap my head around that one. A bucket that *holds* water... But there *is* no water...

I think I had it there for a moment. Ooh, my head hurts.

  • very flamable stuff, if the battery overheats and sets its self on fire were all screwed.

  • its just a piece of paper, what harm can it do?

  • Yes, all of us will die. We all know how incredibly dangerous paper is. What if terrorists get hold of such awesomely destructive paper? None of us would be safe. The world is in danger of imminent destruction. This madman must be stopped.

    Ignorant, reactionary brain-bag.

  • This is a sign that we should start recycling so we get more energy. ;P

  • bin total ungezogen heute wer will mit mir camn der kann sich ja melden

  • Imagine how much electricity you can conduct in a roll of toilet paper

  • this is AWESOME!!

  • nice job when you need something you eather look to china or stanford

(in this case it is both) haha

  • love his accent

  • Posting in a historic video! :3

  • Fabulous. This is obviously will also be easier to recycle than Lithium or Lead acid. Congratulations. You deserve the Nobel Piece prize this time. 5 stars.

  • Why would this deserve a peace prize? I hope that you know that there are different Nobel prizes...

  • That is true, we're supposed to be aiming for a so called "greener future", but at this rate the earth will only turn itself into a desert.

  • Anyone can get the peace prize for anything. look at the recent one, a piece prize for nothing. they are like candy.

  • Is there a prize for spelling the same word correctly twice in a row?

  • I wish they would have talked about things like expense, whether or not the nano material can be recovered and recycled, whether or not the nano material is toxic, and whether or not the dried nano material creates dust that is hazardous when inhaled.

Asbestos was a pretty cool new tech once.

It'd also be nice to know things like how much they can reduce weight compared to current tech, how long they last and if they can be recharged (of course the capacitors can).

  • Electronic asbestos was my thoughts, They are so light and small they will be launched into the air when incinerated. How long would it take for nano dust to build up in TV/PC's sets and short the chips etc?

  • very very nice

  • Thats amazing, celular phone will be small than now!!! Great discover!!

  • paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper, paper

  • I would really like to know what capacity this would give.

  • Instead of typing all that crap, why didn't you come up with something that really helps mankind?

  • What, like taking everybody else's shit off of You tube and creating an account and post their shit on my account? Sound like someone? That's right, it's you, dumb ass. Paper fucking batteries, really, really.

  • @VCat2006 Capitalist said market cannot cope with change yet!

  • @Laxcon Not all capitalists are the same, and the market consists of unique individuals. Some buy gold because it's shiny, others buy food because it tastes good, others give away their soul for a variety of reasons.

  • @VCat2006 oick jackass i work on venture firm as a freelance agent i know those fucker wants! wat they want is not based on the standard u said

  • @Laxcon Then they will barter with those who will help them instead. Are they roving warlords? Surely the most adaptable will survive. That's evolution, baby.

  • We are still trying to find cures for cancer. Its not like the world can ONLY focus on one breakthrough at a time. Open your eyes and be glad for human advancement. Each breakthrough gets us closer to a better world. If you are so obsessed with a cure for cancer, why don't you make it yourself.

  • you know what'll make this world a better place? guess not, maybe going veg will help.

  • Very true

  • The world has never been a good place nor a bad place. It has always been.

  • if this invention takes off, he'll be able to.

but odds are he was too busy changing the world to worry about what you think of his teeth ;)

  • translation please

  • great job. hail from romania!

  • Nice demo, great PNAS publication.

So basically the paper replaces the aluminum and copper current collector, but the other parts of the battery are still the same, am I correct?

I don't see how this will make the battery lighter, because the aluminum and copper current collectors are typically fairly thin and light already.

Also I don't think Lithium ion batteries will ever be used for grid-scale storage, the cost would just be enormous compared to alternative technologies.

    Maybe for cars...

  • I really wished my college to have facilities to actually experiment stuffs on XP Many great minds in many colleges can only do so much with their equipments XD

Though, carbon nano tubes can be made from burnt carbon right? so it is not the facility/equipment that mattered, it was their hypothesis that worked, kudos to you guys.

  • I am really tired of paying for all this oil. Hope we get more alternatives out in few years. Just imagine getting all your appliances and car to run on electricity and getting some good solar panels small wind turbine and these as your storage. Boy are the energy companies in trouble. I am more than happy to pay premium to get all these greedy energy companies to go under.

  • For years and years scientists from all over the world claiming they made breakthrough in the battery area that will "revolution" our way of life....

  • @kaede15

For years and years, scientists have been making breakthroughs that have improved our lives. From lead batteries, to nickel batteries, to lithium batteries, to very powerful safe lithium batteries, the march of progress has been relentless and will probably continue.

  • @swbluto

The progress you describe took more than a century to advance 5 generations, the lead batteries was invented in 1859. So forgive my skepticism and not share your joy over this.

And talking about safety, of course the later batteries are more powerful BUT google for "lithium battery explosion" and the result may surprise you.

I guess my point is, there are too many scientists claiming they have to solution to the battery problem which probably turns into vaporware with time.

  • yeah, we've been using them in our r/c plane world for about 10 years now i lost many planes from poor battery care

  • Yeah, as if standing on the shoulders of giants doesn't speed up research.

And look up "lead battery explosion".

  • poor trees %-) anyway - a great innovation and I don't think it's fake - in my view it's highly inprobable, as it's being published by Stanford not some laboratory in Sudan

  • To musi byc juz zapewne opatentowane i zaawansowane w dzialaniu skoro tak otwarcie o tym mowia i pokazuja filmik albo tez jedna wielka sciema. Oby to 1. Pozdr

  • Wow! Keep it up! Can't wait to put paper into my Handy or print my own battery with special kinds of toner... go for it!

  • that's a great innovation

  • This is great!

  • nice intro....
