Joe English, I think was the strongest drummer in Wings especially when it comes to feel.
He played the live 1976 stuff with great energy and fitting to the song. When you go back and listen to the previous drummer's studio work compared to Joe's live stuff, Joe wins! Even if Paul was the drummer on the early stuff, Joe rocked it. He was happy back there playing the hits.
Joe English was with the band for two years. He left because he reportedly was "home sick." Anyway, he faded into obscurity after leaving Wings. Why would he leave Wings? It wasn't like he was going to make it big in some other way. Was Paul telling him how to drum? That was part of the reason Ringo left the Beatles temporarily in 1968.
He left Wings mainly because his wife was involved in a terrible car accident and was told by the doctors that she wouldn't be able to walk for a year. Some things are more important than a band, family being one of them.
@JimmyMcCullochFan I like joe but it think steve was a superior drummer personally I am a drummer to and I like steve holly's style more, but other favourite drummers are pete best and supergrass danny, I guess it's a matter of taste, Joe was a great singer though and his harmonica on the london town LP was marvellous
@SemillaJoven Yep, Joe English became a born again Christian and put out a slew of records under the name "joe english band or english band." they were quite popular in the Christian market from late seventies to 1985-86 when they broke up. He no longer plays drums due to serious ankle problems from drumming but lives in N.Carolina.
Don't make fun. This guy with the rat under his lip was actually making a fashion statement that was all the rage in the 70's in parts of the Netherlands and I think in Texas too. He was sporting what they called at the time the "hairy lip look" and it was insanely popular.
