Quite a discovery, this Nyckelharpa! Is this Swedish folk music? It is remarkably similar to baroque music. Is it correct that Swedish folk music was more heavily influenced by art music that for instance Norwegian music? I can just imagine how courtly culture reached the Swedish Empire during its heyday - Stockholm was quite a cosmopilitan city then.
The type of tune is called a Polska, which is in 3/4, but in swedish folk music, that time signature is not really identified with the waltz, there are many more types of tunes that are in 3/4. The key to the Polska is that you accentuate 1 and 3, unlike just the 1 in a waltz.
I am an American and love music. I have never heard this instrument before but I think it is just fantastic. Kudos to the musicians and a special thanks to a friend in Sweden for cluing me in on it.
It's shaped similar to a violin, sounds like a violin and it's played with a bow so I'm just making my own comparisons, not claiming to be any expert, cheers James.
If you listen to one singel nyckelharpa it doesen´t sound like a violin. Or any instrumnet in the violin family. It has much deeper and richer sound.:-)
Translated into english it would be "Key harp", the small wooden sticks that are used instead of the left hands fingers on the strings are the "keys".
Edvard a Elin taught workshops last year on the West
Coast, U.S....this tune really expresses musicians' happiness as the title suggests! this is fresh from their April performance and appearance in Pennsylvania
These folks were the teachers at a nyckelharpa workshop (stemma) in california a few years back...i would love to hear them again!

It can't be like a strathspey or reel because this tune is in 3/4 time which is waltz time.

Bit like a strasphey or a reel, only in a slightly different pace, love it. cheers for sharing.

I had never seen this form of violin but it is very sweet music.
accordionman1950 4 years ago
It's not a form of violin, it's more closely related to the Hurdy Gurdy.

accordionman1950 4 years ago
According to the Oxford dictionary a hurdy gurdy is played by turning a handle, no resemblance whatsoever to this beautiful instrument.
accordionman1950 4 years ago
They are all related. There's a Wikipedia article on this instrument.

Jag är släkt med Eric Sahlström, jag brukade sitta i hans knä när jag var liten och lyssna på när han spelade. ^^ Nyckelharpa är fruktansvärt fint.
