Nothin against Holland as I haven't seen her performance but all I know is that Nancy Marchand was mindblowing as Livia on The Sopranos. An Emmy would have been richly deserved for her.
@jaraandrew100 Every year, the ceremony is telecast on a different major network (ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox). It's actually airing on the Fox network this year. The last time was in 2007 (the year parts of Sally Field and Katherine Heigl's speeches were censored).
I remember Holland Taylor interviewed on the red carpet that night, she said that it was going to be Nancy Marchand's night. I have to agree with Taylor but kudos to her for a lovely speech and honoring Marchand with grace and respect. BTW, as much as I loved Marchand's Livia Soprano, Taylor's tough as nails judge was a great character.
Don't y'all take this the wrong way, but Laura Flynn should have won. I do love the Practice, and I'm glad Holland Taylor won, because it's a win for The Practice, but I remember this year clearly, Holland was really good, but Laura Flynn, was superb that year.
I love Holland Taylor. She's a great character actress and if she'd been born earlier, I'm sure she would have been a staple on the Silver Screen. You can tell when they are stage trained. She's a gem.
Holland and I were in a therapy group in NYC from 1975-80. Holland was a struggling actress back then and one of the finest, warmest people I ever known. One day she announced that she had been cast in a new sitcom named "Bosom Buddies". I never saw her again but have been following her career ever since. Nobody has earned and deserves their success more than Holland. Looking at her here, she is the same person I knew 30+ years ago.
Is it just me or are a couple of co-stars not exactly loving this win? Lara Flynn @ 0:22 talking to Jack Nicholson as Holland goes to the stage. Dylan McDermott practically rolling his eyes @ 0:42?
Go Holland! You acted them off the screen - and they know it! Great actress.
@SassySuzi part of it might be that she isn't really a supporting actress on the show...she never received star billing. she was nominated as a supporting actress through a technicality of how many episodes she appeared in. I"m glad she won...she's great...but I think Lara Flynn Boyle would've been a shoein that year had Holland not been nominated
@SassySuzi Wrong. You're being paranoid and biased because you love Holland. You have no proof or any idea what Lara Flynn is saying. And, Dylan McDermott was reacting to Hollands comment "overnight". Which was an interesting thing to say after a win. The entire audience reacted to that. You seem to have a problem w/ his particular expression. Let's put it in perspective.
In her Emmy speech, she brought the house down when she lifted the Emmy over her head and said, "Overnight!" Taylor thanked David E. Kelley, The Practice's producer/writer and creator, for, "giving me a chariot to ride up here on: A woman who puts a flag on the moon for women over 40. Who can think, who can work, who are successes, who can cook, and who can COOK!
actually at this point this was her first nomination...but you're right because she was on TV and movies and theatre forever without ever being nominated...
Am I mistaken, or was that her on "Bosom Buddies" with Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari back in the day? Regardless, she elevates everything in which she appears. Great, great character actress.
just wondering what she means when she says: "[on Marchand] whose daughter I have played at least 10 times"...does she mean she played the character of Marchand's daughter, or did she mean Marchand PLAYED her daughter, but she got the words mixed up? sorry, im probably not hearing this right. can someone please explain this to me? thanks! :)
Nancy Marchand and Holland Taylor both have extensive Broadway backrounds. I think she means that she has played Marchand's daughter on stage at least 10 times.
ahh thanks for that, JoshFi! I thought that was wot she meant, but then the camera flicked to a woman who I assumed was Marchand (at 1:15)and I thought she looked waaay to young to play Taylor's mother, so I got confused. Now I realise Marchand wasn't even there lol. thanks a bunch! :)
Nancy Marchand was a huge emmy favorite having won four emmys for "Lou Grant" most people predicted Marchand to win that night so Holland Taylor was a huge surprise. I can't say that Taylor did not deserve this though. Her work on The Practice was stellar. If you have not seen the first couple of seasons of The Practice vozas you should rent it to see her work.
I'm related to her =)

Laura Flynn Boyle (The Practice) should have won, though I do like Holland Taylor, but Laura Flynn had better stuff that season.

I remember I was amazed by her winning. How many episodes did she appear in? Is this even considered "supporting role" rather than "recurring role"?

Her performmance on "The Practice," as the concupiscent judge, was steamy to the point of scalding.

maybe a lot of it has to do with that Holland isn't really a series regular? Versus Lara Flynn and Camryn Manheim were?
That was the year that the Practice swept all the major categories...so they should be happy to be nominated anyways!

what does overnight means in this case?
nomartini1 2 years ago
...That she became a star overnight by winning this award.....kinda ironic...but it worked..the audience enjoyed it.
Valapaca 2 years ago
No- she said "Overnight" ironically because she's been in TV forever- she has been nominated 5 times. That's why they all loved it.
