He needed to take control of the situation by making LDSK think he's just as twisted as he is, so he could keep talking, and get his leg close to Reid. So he needed reasons to be angry, thus the concept that he was a twisted, expendable agent who just wanted to beat someone up before dying in the shootout.

Yup, I had the same reaction. Not outright crying but pretty darn close. You just have to appreciate how pathetic Reid seems and how mean Hotch is during this scene. I guess it's why they're such a great actors :D.
